Getting to Honningsvåg, Norway, from Canada

Hi there, I’m Canadian. In June 2025, I’m planning to travel to Nordkapp in Norway to start a bike trip all the way to Finistère in Spain. My plan is to take a flight to CDG, Paris, and then connect to a flight to Honningsvåg. Do you think that’s the best option? The other option would be to fly from Canada to Oslo and then connect to a flight to Honningsvåg. It seemed just as easy to go through Paris as it did to go to Oslo. Maybe there are other ways besides flying to get to Honningsvåg. I could also have the option to go directly to Nordkapp. Any possible options would help me plan my trip better so I can start my bike journey from Nordkapp. VéloAcadien. Paul 😉

Hi there,

CDG to Honningsvåg isn’t the best idea. Instead, try flying from Canada to CPH (Copenhagen) or ARN (Stockholm), then head to Tromsø—or, sure, Honningsvåg via Widerøe.

I agree with Michel—CDG-Honningsvåg won’t be efficient. HVG is only served by Widerøe.

I assume you’ll be traveling with your bike as checked luggage. The more complicated your itinerary (and potentially on separate tickets), the higher the chances things could get messy. Will you be departing from Moncton or Montréal?

If it were me, I’d go with the simplest option: a multi-destination (open-jaw) ticket with Moncton-Tromsø on the outbound (likely a "milk run" with 3-4 stops) and Porto-Moncton on the return. I’m suggesting Porto because the direct Porto-Montréal flight is being reinstated for next summer, and there’s also a Lisbon-Montréal route (on Air Canada or TAP Portugal). Either will be much simpler than trying to find a return route from Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, or even Madrid. With this plan, you’d just need to add a one-way Tromsø-Honningsvåg on Widerøe.

From Montréal, you’d theoretically have another option with Transat (which also has a direct Porto-Montréal flight), but their website can’t generate a Montréal-Tromsø itinerary (they easily find Montréal-Oslo, and sometimes the price and route aren’t too bad, but then you’d need to do Oslo-Tromsø-HVG on Widerøe).

Hi there,

Just a quick note about Widerøe: they use small planes, mostly Dash aircraft. I love them, but when it comes to bulky luggage like a bike, I’m not sure it’s hassle-free, especially on a Dash 8 Q100—the smallest ones. From what I gather on their site, your baggage might only be sent on the next flight. https://www.wideroe.no/en/travel-info/baggage

Hi Carl,

I took a flight from Moncton to Montreal. From Montreal, I have a layover at CDG before heading to Tromsø. From there, I’ll take a boat to Honningsvåg. I chose Air France as my airline—it’ll make transfers and baggage handling easier.

Thanks for the info that helped me plan the start of my trip well!
