Après avoir répondu a de nombreux forumeur(euse)s, a mon tour de vous soliciter pour notre 3eme voyage en Indonésie (après Java, Bali, Lombok Flores/Komodo) : Sulawesi est au programme en septembre prochain 🙂
Je viens d'acheter les billets avec arrivée a Jakarta et retour de KL
Pour le reste, on a l'habitude de voir sur place (sept étant un mois assez peut touristique on a tjs trouvé sans aucun pb des hotels, voitures, bateaux ...).
Toutefois il faut que je prévois notre parcours "a la louche" pour réserver les vols internes que je ne souhaite pas acheter sur place au dernier moment, et du coup j'ai qqs questions 😛
Le parcours prévu en 22j n'a rien d'original :
- JKT-Makassar-Bira avec 1 ou 2j de repos ds la région de Bira
- 4-5 j au pays toraja : visite de la région en scooter et a pied + 1 ou 2 j avec guide pour mieux appréhender la culture Toraja
- Rantepao-Lac Poso-Ampana avec si possible un tour vers les mégalithes du Tore Lindu
- 6-7j aux togians pour snorkeling
3 solutions pour le retour :
- soit par Ampana et Luwuk en bus, puis avions Luwuk-Makassar et Makassar-KL
- soit par Ampana et Palu puis avions Palu-Balikpapan (Borneo) et Balikpapan-KL
- soit par Bubulan puis avions Gorontalo-Makassar et Makassar-KL
si ça vous parait + simple, on peut aussi faire ce périple ds l'autre sens et ds ce cas je pourrais ajouter Selayar s'il nous reste un peu de temps (a-t-on le temps de voir qq chose en 2 j sur place ou est-ce vraiment trop rapide et ds ce cas on abandonera ? )
Voila donc mes (nombreuses 🤪) questions :
- est-il aussi facile a Sulawesi qu'aileurs en Indonésie (Flores, Java, Bali) de trouver une voiture avec chauffeur pour 1 trajet a la journée (Bira-Rantepao, Rantepao-Lac Poso-Ampana Ampana-Palu) ? Pour les petits trajets on prend les bemo, mais vu la longueur des étapes on préfère investir ds le confort !
- si oui, les tarifs sont-ils plutot ceux de Java/Bali ou Flores(qui est nettement + cher)
- est-il possible de trouver des bus en direction de Bira depuis l'aéroport de Makassar ? Sinon combien de temps faut-il pour faire aéroport-gare routière-Bira ?
- Bira-Rantepao est-ce possible ds la journée en voiture ? Si non, ou faire une halte sympa ? Sur la cote Est ou ds l'intérieur ?
- entre Ampana et les Togian ou entre Bubulan et les Togians, il n'y a pas de bateaux tous les jours, mais les jours ou des bateaux sont prévus, y-a-t-il des risques d'annulation ? Vu qu'on repart ensuite en avion je ne voudrais pas que le bateau du jour soit annulé !
- y-a-t-il un interêt de rester 1 jour ds la région de Luwuk (idem pour Bubulan/Gorontalo), y-a-t-il "qq chose a voir" (je ne trouve pas gd chose ds les guides ni sur le forum)
- parc de Lore Lindu : est-il possible de faire une boucle interessante pour voir les mégalithes en 1 j depuis Tentena ? Si oui est-ce possible avec "une voiture normale" ou faut-il un tout terrain (sachant que septembre est en fin de saison sèche). Cette boucle peut-elle se faire en voiture et avec des approches a pied, ou tout se fait-il en voiture ? L'idéal serait de faire un trekking de plusieurs jours ... mais ce ne sera pas possible par manque de temps
- les mégalithes du Tore-Lindu depuis Palu ? il me semble qu'il sont plus proche de Tentena que de Palu, est-ce le cas ? Sinon combien de temps faut-il depuis Palu ?
- Togians : est-ce interessant de partager notre semaine en 2 endroits différents ? Je pensais a Malenge ou Bolilanga (villages + lac aux méduses dans le coin il me semble ? ), et qq part plus au sud (ou ? ) . A priori pas de pb pour trouver un bungalow sur place en sept , vous confirmez ? Si vous avez des plans de bungalows pas trop roots je suis preneur : tout en détestant le luxe (aucun risque aux Togians), on aime bien avoir un petit confort (par ex une vrai salle de bain, pas partagée, bungalow avec un peu de charme ...)
- bateau Togians-Pagimana ? d'ou part-il aux Togians, jours, prix ? je n'ai pas trouvé + d'infos sur ces bateaux qui ne sont qu'a 2h de bus de Luwuk, donc interessant
- les fonds de Tanjung Karan a coté de Palu sont-ils aussi extraordinaires que ce que j'ai lu ? (sachant qu'on y passerait après les Togians).
- enfin des 3 possibilités de retour des Togians, y-en-a-t il une qui est a privilégier ... ou a éliminer ? (fatigue, risque d'annulation de bateau/avion, trajet trop long ..)

J ai fait un peu le même parcours à Sulawesie en 2014 (mais je ne suis pas allée aux Togians, trop court pour moi qui aime prendre mon temps).
Je ne peux répondre qu à une petite partie de tes questions.
Pour aller de Makassar à Bira on avait loué une bagnole pour 500 000 IDR.
Pour Bira Rantepao, on a pas eu de mal à trouver puisqu à Bira y a un seul mec qui faisait ça ( à l époque en tout cas). On avait passé une nuit à Sengkang (lac tempé sympa pour une balade en bateau au coucher du soleil) pour couper ce qui a fait 6h de route, idem le lendemain. Tarif disproportionné comparé au cout de la vie dérisoire, 1 800 000 je crois bien soit 120E pour les 2 jours. Bon, en même temps on déteste marchander donc tu peux surement l avoir à moins (mais le monsieur savait qu il était tout seul, pas prêt à négocier quoi 😕).
On a adoré Sulawesie mais les distances sont très longues et on doit donc y retourner pour voir tout ce qu on a raté !].
J avais fait un carnet si ça te dit mais ça ne répondra pas vraiment à tes questions!!

Excellente idée de parler des cotés négatifs de l'Indonésie, qui n'est pas qu'un paradis de peuples hyper sympas et de plages bordées de cocotiers ..... mais comme tu le dis, de retour de mes voyages, je ne garde que les cotés positifs 😏
Par ex tu parles de muezzin : je me souviens d'une nuit en 2011 a Sempol ds un endroit super au milieu des plantations de caféiers perdu ds la montagne a 1500m (près du Kawa Ijen) ... pas de bol c'était le dernier jour du ramadan, un haut parleur était a 10m de la guesthouse et de 23h a 4h le niveau sonore frisait l'insupportable (hyper fort pour que toutes les maisons éparpillées sur la plateau puisse l'entendre) . Evidemment on n'a pas fermé l'oeil de la nuit 🤪 mais finalement je ne garde que le bon souvenir de ce minuscule village ou on a acheté des bricoles a une vielle dame ds une toute petite échoppe et ou les tous les enfants se pressaient pour être pris en photo (photo jointe)

Pour les saleté des plages, tes photos sont éloquentes ! j'en ai vu des sales mais pas a ce niveau ...
Qd aux distances, j'imagine que ce doit être du même style que sur certaines portion de Flores (Riung Bajawa par ex 3h30 de voiture pour 70 km).

nous etions au SULAWESI en sept 2012 et il n'y avait pas de bus pour allar à BIRA.Nous avons pris un kijangà la gare routière de makassar pour bira et nous avions payé 200 000rps (pas trop bien négocié.....)et le trajet avait duré 5 à6 h.
ça me parait un peu court de prévoir seulement 2 jours à bira compte tenu de la durée des transports .
la plage de bira n'est pas belle et la localité de bira beach non plus mais nous , on a adoré les alentours😎 .on logeait au kaliku kafé , un petit bungalow rustique , tout seul en bord de mer, de l'autre coté (175 000 rps/N) et on avait loué un scooter au proprio du bungalow (50 000rps/j)
On prenait un petit chemin avant pantai bira sur la droite et on a dècouvert des fonds marins fabuleux pour snorkeler tout seuls
Il est interessant aussi d'aller se promener dans le vrai village de bira au son des cliquetis des metiers à tisser .toutes les maisons en ont et les habitants se feront un plaisir de vous montrer leur travail et ce sans aucune arrière pensée commerciale car ils ne vendent pas .
A voir aussi dans les proches alentours , la construction des bateaux "bungis"

Nous étions allés nous renseigner à la salassa GH , car eux , parlaient anglais !ils sont très sympas et nous avaient proposé plusieurs options (voiture privée , ou mix voit et bus ou voit et kijang avec tous les prix )Mais meme en chartérisant une voiture, ils prévoyait un stop à SENGKANG (je crois) car il faut bien 6H pour y arriver(nous, on avait opté pour un mix voit jusqu'à bulukumba et bus jusqu'à sengkang )

le lendemain, il y a des bus pour rantepao avec changement a Walawoi( 5 à 7H de trajet , je ne me rappelle plus mais c'est un loooonnnng périple😛 bira-rantepao )

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

No app for this one—you just hop on bus #14 at the local terminal (pay cash on board). But where do I catch it, and where’s the stop??

From what I’ve heard, it’s the Sida Express company (great name, right? 😄).
Can’t book online, but apparently, you *have* to because there’s only one bus at 8 AM.

I was wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as us?
• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

Thanks for all your contributions on the forum—they’ve really helped me plan my trip. There are four of us friends heading to Sulawesi for 20 days. Based on all your advice, I’ve put together the following itinerary:
July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home
Overall, what do you think?
I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
