Hi everyone,

I’m so happy to be posting on this forum again. I’m planning my trip and I’m trying to figure out the train route from Osaka to Odawara. I’ve found direct trains, but I can’t find a direct site for the specific train line (not sure if I’m making sense?!)

Because what I’ve found seems to be a “third-party” site. I can’t seem to find the official site for the specific line. If anyone can shed some light on this, I’d really appreciate it—thanks in advance!

Here you go: https://global.jr-central.co.jp/en/info/timetable/_pdf/shinkansen_east_bound2411.pdf https://global.jr-central.co.jp/en/info/timetable/

Only the Kodama trains numbered in the 700s stop at Odawara. It’s not very practical to come from Shin-Osaka on a Kodama—it takes a long time and isn’t much fun.

There are also the Hikari trains numbered in the 640s. One train every two hours. Probably the best option.

Otherwise, without diving into the official railway company schedules (which can be tricky to read if you’re not used to them), Google Maps routes are really efficient. That’s what I’ve been using since Hyperdia disappeared. There’s also Jorudan, but only the basic version is free. https://world.jorudan.co.jp/mln/fr/?sub_lang=nosub

Thanks so much! Yeah, I think I’ll take the "fast" route instead of the one with stops to get to Odawara as quickly as possible.

Thanks again for your reply and advice.

Eric should remember that we took a trip together many years ago from Toyohashi to Tokyo on a Kodama train, and what’s more, in a "non-reserved" car that was packed—it wasn’t fun at all. Especially when, at every stop, we’d get passed by all the Hikari and Nozomi trains zooming by at full speed, practically mocking us.

That said, if you want to take in the scenery along the way at your own pace, there’s nothing stopping you from using the classic line (Tōkaidō Honsen), but you’ll need to set aside the whole day for it.

We did this another time when traveling from Ikebukuro to Kyoto via the Hokuhoku Line, Toyama, and Kanazawa—just to avoid taking the shinkansen again.

It’s been quite a while since the shinkansen went all the way to Kanazawa, and it’s even recently been extended to Tsuruga.

"The shinkansen has been running all the way to Kanazawa for quite some time now, and it’s even been extended to Tsuruga recently."

Yeah, I know—but what I was talking about was way before all those extensions to the Nagano Shinkansen.

Tsuruga 1 year, Kanazawa 10 years.

Even with the Shinkansen, it's still possible by regular train. But with lots of transfers and various private companies.

Omiya - Takasaki - Echigo Yuzawa - Naoetsu - Toyama - Kanazawa - Fukui - Tsuruga

Just for the stylistic exercise. Because it's extremely slow and long.

Good evening everyone,

Thanks for your replies. I’m planning to take the Shinkansen to make the most of my time there.

Best regards
