Hi there, I’m heading to Rajasthan in January and planning to go from Jodhpur to Udaipur, hiring a driver for this leg. Is it possible to do this route in one day, including a (quick?!) visit to Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh? Do you think it’s doable? Thanks in advance for your feedback! 😉

Hi there,

Yes, it's possible to do with a driver in a day. It’s not a problem for the Ranakpur temple, which can be visited in less than an hour if you're in a hurry. But for Kumbhalgarh, it’ll be a quick visit—just an hour or two max—since a full tour of the site takes several hours. Still, it gives you a good overview. One tip: leave Jodhpur early!

Everyone does it their own way, but I spent my day in Kumbhalgarh! It was really fun—I’m currently uploading all these photos of Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur to my Youpic page. A special shout-out to Ranakpur: attacked by squadrons of bees. I’ll tell that story one day in my travel journal... from Kerala 😉

I'm sure Kumbhalgarh deserves a full day if the weather conditions cooperate. When I went there, unfortunately, it was monsoon season, and after climbing a little way up the fort, we were already in the clouds and couldn't see two meters ahead. Needless to say, the visit was cut a bit short... And this summer, an unexpected last-minute event forced us to skip it. I’ll have to write about that in my travel journal too, if I ever finish it...

Maybe you could start it? The rest will come day by day when you can, or... never—alas. I never finished my journal about Gujarat

I started it but didn’t even have time to proofread. That said, it might be a good idea to start posting it and let it take as long as it takes...

Thanks Marien33 and Pagaljavab, I’ve been reading you (silently) for years on this Indian forum, and I’m honored you both contributed so quickly to this post! Especially Marien and your many travel journals—I check them more than regularly. (I still have a little time, but the idea of retiring in India someday is gently floating around in my head 😊, and your writings naturally pique my interest even more as I flip through your stories on VF.)

Enough flattery.

From what you’re saying, leaving Jodhpur in the morning, spending the afternoon and evening in Ranakpur (which apparently only opens after 2 p.m.), and the next morning in Kumbhalgarh would be a good compromise? That would mean cutting into my 3 days planned in Udaipur.

You have to make choices... It’d be a real shame to cut short the 3 days in Udaipur, which I think deserves even more time. No, I don’t think the Ranakpur temple opens at 2 PM. In fact, Google Maps says it’s open from 6:30 AM until the evening. If your time is limited, visit Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh in the same day. Try to get to Ranakpur as early as possible and spend about an hour there, then head to Kumbhalgarh for lunch and spend 2 or 3 hours. The drive is a bit long, even if it doesn’t seem like it.

All the credit to me! With a board of prawns, no Coke, no Pepsi?

I think the Ranakpur temple isn't open to non-Jains in the morning...
