Hi there,

I’m planning a trip to Morocco, arriving in Marrakech and leaving from Essaouira.

For my itinerary, what do you recommend as a cheap mode of transport: private driver, car rental, train, or taxi?

It’ll be a 5-6 day trip with my husband.

Thanks in advance! Have a great day, Émilie

Hi there

The most practical (and fastest, since you're only staying 5/6 days) and cheapest option will be renting a car. Check out Yacout, a local rental company. But if it's just for the Marrakech to Essaouira route, you can take the Supratours bus for 10 €—it’s a 3-hour trip.

Thanks Kate for the feedback. The idea would be to do a route that ends in Essaouira, passing through the Agafay Desert and other places. I’ll refine the itinerary.

Is driving in Morocco not too complicated?

Getting out of Marrakech will be the trickiest part, but the rental company might agree to escort you—if you ask nicely 😉—to a quieter road. During the day, it’s fine—there are definitely worse places to drive in some countries! The road network is really good, and you can cruise along at an average of 60 km/h. I’ve driven thousands of kilometers in Morocco and never had any issues. That said, it’s best to avoid driving at night because vehicles like mopeds and bikes often don’t have lights.

For someone who drives in Marseille, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Like Kate, I’d advise against driving at night.
