Hi there, I’ll be in Oman in early March 2025. I’ve rented a 4x4 to reach the Oman Sea coast from Ibra. I’ve seen two options on Oman Off Road:

The OOR 30 route via Wadi Kabbah, Wadi Bani Jabir to Qalhat.

Combine the OOR 30 and OOR 28 routes via the Salma Plateau to Tiwi or Fins.

Can anyone advise me on the current condition of the tracks? For option 2, is it better to head down to Tiwi or Fins? Can this trip be done in one day? Thanks in advance to those who can share some great tips!

Best regards.

Hello, In January 2020, I took the Finns Qurun route (OOR 28) and had to turn back after 22 km because the track was blocked just before the village of Qurun. I think it’s been reopened since then. Just a heads-up: when the OOR guide says "steep road," it means the track is *really* steep, sometimes forcing you into low gear. Otherwise, Oman is a stunning country, and the OOR guide is really well done and accurate. Happy travels

Hi, Thanks for your feedback. I read your travel journal and drew a lot of inspiration from it for my itinerary.😉

Hi, were you able to get more details about the road up to the Salmah Plateau from Fins? We’d also like to take it during our trip in March. I also read that there’s another access route from Bimmah to the village of #Amq_al-Rabakh as a round trip. I’m not sure which one is easier and how long each drive takes? We’ll have a Toyota Fortuner. If you have any info, I’d love to hear it. Thanks!

Hello,

I’ve just returned from Oman, but I can’t answer your question exactly. For my part, I did the route in a day from Ibra to Tiwi via Qurun, crossing the Salma Plateau at a relaxed pace. A 4x4 is mandatory.

Here’s the itinerary I followed.

DAY 1:Day in Muscat, shopping, etc. Shopping at LULU Hypermarket for last-minute camping supplies. In the late afternoon, we visited the Mutrah Souk and strolled along the corniche. DAY 2: Muscat/Bilad Sayt Nakhal, skipped the fort visit (a bit Disney-like with the renovations), 2-hour hike at Wadi MISTALL to Wakan, and a walk in Little Snake Canyon. DAY 3: Bilad Sayt/Al Hamra/Misfat al Abriyeen Round-trip hike to the village of Hatt. Visited the old town of Al Hamra and the museum. Walked the plantation trail. DAY 4:Misfat al Abriyeen/An Nakhur/Jebel Sham Height Resort Round-trip 4x4 drive to the village of An Nakhur, 2-hour round-trip trek from Wadi Ghul to Al Khitaym. DAY 5:Jebel Sham Height Resort/Wadi Dam/Nizwa Balcony Trail, stop on the way back at Wadi Damm Pools for a swim, and visited the Neolithic tombs of Al Ayn. DAY 6:Nizwa/Jebel Akhdar Hike around the Rose Circuit. DAY 7:Jebel Akhdar Hikes: Lost Village, Mirage in the Mountain, and Discovery Trail. Hitched a ride back. DAY 8:Jebel Akhdar/Wahiba Hike at Wadi Bani Habib, desert camping in Wahiba Sands. DAY 9:Wahiba Sands/Sugar Dunes Crossed Wahiba Sands, drove to Sugar Dunes. Stayed at the newly opened resort. DAY 10:Sugar Dunes/Sur 4x4 in the dunes and on the beach, dinner at a typical restaurant, nighttime visit to Sur’s corniche, and the traditional souk of Sur. DAY 11:Sur/Wadi Bani Khalid/Ibra Visited the lighthouse, old town, shipyards, and the corniche. Explored Ibra’s traditional souk and stopped by a barber. DAY 12:Ibra/Salma Plateau/Tiwi Salma Plateau and the beehive tombs, Wadi Khabbah, swim in the Oman Sea. DAY 13:Wadi Shab/Wadi Tiwi/Wadi Al Arbeieen At Wadi Shab by 7:30 AM—we had the place to ourselves! All the way to the small cave. Tiwi up to the pool. DAY 14:Wadi Al Arbeieen/Wadi Dayqah/Muscat Hike to the waterfall, Wadi Dayqah Dam, old town of Muscat, and dinner at a traditional Omani restaurant (Bait Al Luban). DAY 15: Muscat Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House.

It was a fantastic trip, and I’m happy to share more details if anyone’s interested.

If you’re interested, I’m selling my Oman Off Road paperback in English. DM me for details.
