Visiting Delos from Mykonos by boat

We’ll be spending two nights on Mykonos at the end of May so we can visit Delos. I’m wondering if we can easily find a boat by just heading to the port the same morning or if it’s better to book in advance.

Hi there, only book if you want a guided tour with a visit in French. Otherwise, boats run from 9:00 AM. Count about 20 € round-trip without a guide, and the same for entry to the site. Last boat departure is around 5:00 PM, and the site closes at 8:00 PM.

Thanks so much for your reply. We won’t be taking a guided tour, but since we’ll only be on Mykonos for a day, specifically for Delos, I didn’t want to risk not being able to visit because there weren’t enough spots for the crossing. Looks like there’s nothing to worry about though 🙂

Hi there,

To add to the previous reply, I’d **strongly** recommend you get to the port very early before boarding. In mid-April, the boat was already packed, and we had a hard time finding two seats in different parts of the ferry. It was actually better that way because the boat was rocking violently during the hour-long crossing due to rough seas. So I can only imagine how crowded it’ll be by late May. We only stayed one night in Mykonos, which was more than enough, but we arrived early on the first day and left late the following evening for our next destination. Accommodation is expensive in Mykonos.

See here for our island-hopping trip.

Safe travels! 🙂

Hi Michel,

Oh no! I was feeling reassured, and now I'm worried again 🤪 I only found one company name to book online in advance (though there are probably others)... I'll think about it 😇 Our flight gets in late afternoon, which is why we're staying two nights. We found a reasonably priced hotel, but we'll need to figure out how to get to the port (maybe by bus, since taxis seem way too expensive).

I'll read your travel journal in more detail because we're also going to Naxos 😉

Have a great day

From our hotel, we walked to the old port. Otherwise, the taxi to/from the airport or the new port was 20 € in 2022. I don’t imagine the price has gone down since! 😉

I think we're looking at around 25 € now... for just a few km 😠 (but we’ll have no choice if we want to get to the ferry port). We’re 3.5 km from the old port. The plan was to walk back to the hotel, stopping to explore Mykonos town along the way. Walking to the old port is still doable, but I’m worried that 2x3.5 km plus the Delos visit might be a bit much, especially if it’s really hot (or if it rains, for that matter).

Be careful—sidewalks along the roads are very narrow or even nonexistent, and traffic is really heavy. Walking outside Chora can be dangerous.

Thanks for pointing that out (I just took a look at the Google Maps street views... it does seem a bit sketchy 😕).
