Je suis ravie de revenir à nouveau vous solliciter pour cette ébauche de circuit dans l'Ouest (après 2004 et 2007, pour ce dernier Sedonax m'a d'ailleurs été d'excellent conseil), les grands espaces nous appellent à nouveau pour 2010 on dirait^^
J'ai déjà suivi avec attention le topic lancé par Lanfeust77, mais aussi le dernier circuit de Vazyvite (je m'étais déjà inspiré de son site en 2004 et 2007, voire même pour mes escapades new yorkaises ... et j'ai même repris le chemin du site de Thierry...), mais je m'égare là... Juste pour vous remercier à nouveau et vous dire combien vos conseils m'ont été précieux !
Voici l'ébauche du circuit (une vingtaine de jours environ) que nous souhaiterions tenter pour fin avril- début mai 2010 :
- Arrivée à Seattle - 3 nuits : je ne compte pas le premier jour, où nous n' arriverons probablement pas très tôt dans la journée... 2 jours pleins pour visiter Seattle et en avoir un aperçu me paraissait correct, tout en faisant l'impasse sur Vancouver (on ne peut pas tout faire !!). Quelles sont les visites à privilégier pour Seattle ?
- Direction Olympic S.P. : Port Townsed - Port Angeles - Hurricane Ridge. 1 Nuit à Forks avec si possible un coucher de soleil sur Rialto Beach avec ou sans les tuyaux (en priant fort le dieu de la météo ?) ...
- Hoh Rain Forest , Lake Quinault puis direction Long Beach en longeant la côte pacifique... (Nous faisons l'impasse sur Mont Rainier) - Nuit à Long Beach Seaview ??? ou avant à Lake Quinault... je m'interroge encore, d'autant qu'à Long Beach il n'a pas l'air d'avoir des tonnes d'hôtels ?
- Embouchure de la Columbia River, Astoria, rte 101 jusque Cannon Beach ou Tillamook (Cape Mears) puis retour vers le Nord , puis vers l'est longe la rivière Columbia, et nuit à Long View (WA).
- Journée au Mont St Helens - trajet classique jusqu'au Johnston Ridge Observatory - nuit à Portland (OR)
- Journée à Portland (on pourra toujours se noyer dans la bière locale si la météo est déprimante ??), nuit à Portland,
- On longe la Columbia River par l'Interstate 84, puis continuation jusque Boise (Idaho) - nuit à Boise (ne pas oublier d'y goûter les pommes de terre !!) . Je n'ai encore regardé tous les centres d'intérêt sur le secteur de la Columbia River...
- Vallée de la Snake River de Boise à Idaho Falls : Bruneau Dunes SP, Twin Falls, Craters of the Moon NM, nuit à Idaho Falls
- Direction Yellowstone via l'entrée Ouest (si elle est ouverte ^^) : Yellowstone 3 nuits (je commence seulement à potasser ma carte du site... et les conseils sont les bienvenus aussi ) ?
- Direction Grand Teton par la route sud de Yellowstone, nuit à Jackson ?
- Direction Salt Lake City, 2 nuits et retour pour la France....
Comme pour tous nos circuits aux USA, nous louerons un 4x4 (depuis que l'on a traversé Grand Escalante Staircaise en berline nous sommes vaccinés...), et nous réserverons la plus grande partie des hôtels via Expedia ou directement sur le site de l'hôtel ou motel (2 fois sur 3, même avec un $ assez bas, c'était meilleur marché chez Expedia... de plus je trouve l'outil pour localiser les hôtels plutot bien fait..) à l'avance (un souvenir aussi d'une semaine de la Jeep à Moab....).
Quant à Yellowstone, j'ai vu que c'était Xanterra (comme à Grand Canyon) qui gérait l'hébergement... Je suis à l'affût de tous vos conseils concernant l'hébergement en hôtel à Yellowstone !
J'espère ne pas avoir été trop confuse dans le descriptif rapide de cette ébauche d'itinéraire et comme d'habitude j'attends avec impatience vos remarques 🙂

Tu le dis toi même pour Yellowstone , l'entrée Ouest ouvre début MAI !?
Un site http://www.yellowstonenationalpark.com/yellowstonelodging.htm pour les dates d'ouverture des lodges, cabins, hotels dans le park, souvent à partir de mi/mai . Pour les réservations il vaut mieux s'y prendre très tôt.

DE Portland à Boise, en passant plus bas, par la route 26, il y a John Day Fossil bed (en fait 3 lieux différents)
Sur Long Beach, je n'ai pas souvenir d'avoir vu d'hôtel, mais beaucoup de propriétés privée rendant la cote peu accessible sauf vers la fin.
Par contre, j'ai manger dans un très bon restaurant de produit de la mer. Je ne me rappelle pas le nom , mais il y avait une histoire de crabe dedans .
Au bout, on peu aussi manger des huitres
Arrêter à Fort Columbia State Park, pour la vue et les canons _ entrée gratuite (embouchure Columbia, rive nord)
De Boise, on peut aller directement à Yellowstone, avec une petite heure d'arrêt à Twin Fall voir Shoshone Falls et 2 h à Crater on the Moon
Pour loger à Yellowstone, même si ce n'est pas du grand confort, les chalets de Canyon Village offre un point assez central pour rayonner dans le parc 1 jour au sud , un au nord et un pour ce que l'on a pas vu ou qu'on veux revoir

Quant à l'entrée Ouest, oui effectivement début mai, mais dépend également des conditions météo... que l'on ne peut prévoir à l'avance 😉

J'ai vu effectivement ce John Day Fossil Bed hier soir en compulsant la revue expédiée par le VisitOregon. Ce site vaut le détour ? Il faut que je regarde sur le net.
Quant à Long Beach, c'est ce que j'ai crains au niveau des hôtels, je vais rechercher plutôt du côté d'Astoria ? Le Fort de Columbia State park est prévu également...
Idaho Falls n'a en effet sans doute pas grand intérêt, néanmoins, je m'étais dit que ça nous permettrait d'aller à Yellowstone de bon matin, tout en évitant une nuit dans la parc (étant donné qu'il est plus facile de loger à l'extérieur) et de profiter un peu de Boise et trainer sur le parcours de la Snake River... On ne se rend pas toujours compte du temps de visite en certains points...
Oui, 3 jours à Yellowstone seront suffisants je suppose avec quelques balades (pas de grandes rando^^).

John Day, ce sont 3 sites assez éloignés les uns des autres, je n'en ai vu que 2 et j'ai bien aimé (nuit à John Day ville)
Je ne sais pas ce qu'il y a voir à Boise, je ne visite pas les villes, mais tu peux faire étape à Yellowstone west
plutôt qu'Idaho Falls que j'ai trouvé sans intérêt, et tu sera à la porte de yellowstone pour y entrer dès le matin.
Tu tu as pu le voir sur mon carnet de voyage (semaines 3 et 4), même en juin il peut neiger à Yellowstone

Oui, j'ai vu pour ces 3 sites... Ta photo donne très envie !! L'endroit me fait penser au désert peint situé dans l'Arizona près de Petrified Forest.
C'est sûre que ce détour semble plus intéressant qu'une Interstate bordant la Columbia, d'autant que les photos vues sur Google Earth ne sont pas plus fabuleuses que cela... Je vais reprendre ma carte, Google map et prévoir ce détour...
Je note pour West Yellowstone... et vais modifier mon trajet.
Quant à la météo, oui toujours très imprévisible 😉

Pour Astoria, j'allais te conseiller celui où j'avais dormi mais je viens de voir que ses prix ont pas mal augmenté en deux-trois ans.
Je te mets quand même le lien car sa situation, directement sur le fleuve Columbia, est superbe. Le rapport qualité-prix était vraiment excellent. C'est un de nos meilleurs souvenirs d'hôtel 🙂
A Longbeach, rouler en voiture sur la plage est permis et comme j'ai vu que tu prenais un 4x4, ça sera un jeu d'enfant pour toi !
Si tu cherches une halte sur la côte du Washington en venant d'Olympic NP, tu pourrais t'arrêter à Moclips.
Nous nous étions juste arrêtés prendre le thé dans un hôtel au bord de l'océan mais l'endroit avait l'air tellement cosy que je m'étais juré d'y revenir un jour y passer au moins une nuit ! 😎
Un très bon souvenir d'hôtel vaut le coup d'être signalé ^^ Quant au traif, il est peut être possible de le trouver meilleur marché via un généraliste ou un courtier et puis les tarifs parfois changent aussi...
En tout cas, la situation de l'hôtel a vraiment l'air idyllique 😎... je retiens le nom et vais faire le tour les sites ad hoc !

Tout à fait, mais je n'ai vu petrified forest que cette année,
mais il n'y a pas que ça, le musée de fossiles au visitor center et la balade dans les roches vertes sont parmi les choses intéressantes

Nous avons vu Petrified Forest et Painted Desert (Arizona) en 2007, et malgré le temps et la lumière pas terrible, la vue sur cette vallée infertile et colorée était assez jolie (voir la photo) !! On a fait également le musée du VC et la balade dans les roches... et pas une âme... seuls au monde, c'était plutot sympa !
Donc cette vallée peinte de l'Oregon me tente pas mal aussi :) toujours mieux qu'une Interstate à la vue monotone...

Pour la I84, une autre possibilité , la quitter à Corbett et prendre la route historique 30 jusqu'à Bonneville, beaux points de vues, belles chutes d'eaux et pas mal de randonnées. http://www.columbiariverhighway.com/
Il me semble que la 30 longe l'I84, j'ai vu qu'il y a avait pas mal de chuttes d'eau dans le secteur. Ca n'est pas un trop grand détour, on limitera concernant les randonnées parce qu'en faisant le détour jusque John Day, ça fera déjà un bon brin de route... pas loin de 10h00 ...

ça pourrait bien être le Crab Pot . le patron rentrait d'un voyage en France et proposait une "bouillabaisse" locale aux huitres et au crabe etc (voir photo)

Quant à Crater of the Moon, on peut y passer de 1h30à 3h00 ( voir plus de 4h si on s'aventure dans les galeries souterraines)
Nous y avons passé près de 3h (entre la première photo et la dernière) - c'est à l'entrée que nous y avons acheté notre carte des parcs
Attention, c'est pas beau, ça fait même plutôt peur, ces étendues de lave presque fraiche; plus impressionnant que ce qu'on voit à Mt St St Helens
mais c'est très intéressant

Je ne doute pas un seul instant de l'intérêt de Crater of the Moon, et puis on est du genre à traîner dans les sites peu fréquentés^^... j'avais déjà été voir sur le site des nps, mais pas super éloquent... J'ai toutefois mis la carte du site de côté !
J'ai regardé avec attention tes 4 semaines de voyage cette année, un bien sympathique parcours 😎 après on se demande comment on peut attraper le virus !!

J'ai refait mon parcours Portland - Boise via John Day Fossil Beds, convaincue... mais ça fait environ 10h00 de route.
Alors, on partira tôt de Portland, mais idéalement je pense trouver un hébergement à l'Est de l'Oregon, idéalement vers Baker City ou avant, et je rajoute une nuit entre Baker City et West Yellowstone. On est en mode promenade, pas en mode visite au pas de charge de toutes manières... 🙂

3 jours pour cette traversée me semblent mieux :) d'autant que j'ai repéré quelques villes fantôme sur le site http://www.ghosttowns.com/bottom.html lequel m'avait déjà fait découvrir Grafton (authentique Ghost Town entre Zion et St Georges) dans le secteur près de John Day, mais surtout dans l'Idaho, vers les Bruneau Dunes : Silver City.
Les shoshone falls ont l'air pas mal non plus.
Pour SEATTLE :
Il s'agit de 3 nuits à Seattle, donc 2 jours en fait ! A peine le temps de visiter Pioneer Square, le watherfront, la visite de l'experience Music Project, monter dans la Space Needle, Pike Place market.... et éventuellement une balade sur Puget Sound en bateau, mais je crois que ça se limitera à monter un oeu plus au nord de Seattle, redescendre par les Iles et prendre le ferry jusque Port Townsed .... pour continuer sur Olympic SP.
Quant à Portland, nous y goûterons donc la bière et le Pinot ! 😄

J'ai donc modifié cette partie du parcours :
jour # - départ de Portland : suivre la Columbia River Gorge jusque the Dalles (en alternant avec l'historique US30) : point de vue de Crown Point depuis Vista House, Multonomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, The Dalles.
Puis prendre l'US97 à Biggs Junctions vers Wasco, puis US206 (champ d'éoliennes), Condon, Hwy 19 puis US207 vers Mitchell, de Mitchell les Painted Hills (John Day Fossil Beds) puis retour sur la US26 vers l'est, arrêt au Sheep Rock sur la rte 19, puis reprendre l'US 26 vers l'Est jusque Austin, puis US7 jusque Baker City et nuit à Baker City.
Cette option me plaît pas mal, au lieu d'une Interstate 84 ennuyeuse, une jolie balade à travers l'état avec à la clefs 2 sites du John Day Fossil Beds...
jour # - départ de Baker City : Boise, Idaho City (???) Bruneau Dunes et quelques ghost town du secteur, Twin Falls avec les Twin falls et les Shoshone Falls, Crater of the Moon, puis nuit à Idaho Falls ou environs (????)
jour # - départ d'Idaho Falls ou environs pour Yellowstone par entrée Ouest .... et là ça se corse car je ne sais pas par quels côté aborder ce grand huit !!! Tout en sachant que l'on peut consacrer 3 ou 4 nuits avec Grand Teton compris, et repartons direction SLC pour le retour.
Je recherche la circuit idéal pour Yellowstone ^^

Si tu traverses le pont à The Dalles, tu arrives à Maryhill où tu trouveras Stonehenge !! 😎
Bon, bien sûr pas celui de Grande Bretagne mais une reproduction plus que fidèle qui surplombe la Columbia River.
J'ai également vu que tu passes à Baker City; à proximité se trouve Hells Canyon, le canyon le plus profond des Etats-Unis.
Je n'y suis pas allée mais, l'année dernière, je m'étais penchée sur un itinéraire qui passait par là. Encore un coin où j'aimerais aller un jour ! 🙂
Ah oui, pour Stonehenge .... je crois avoir vu ça sur la carte ... c'est rigolo !!
J'ai vu pour Hells Canyon... Je m'interroge aussi. Si je dois faire un arrêt ici, je dois compter un stop supplémentaire... (faisable, mais ^^), mais je me demande est-ce que ça vaut le détour ? est-il plus impressionnant vu de l'Oregon ou de l'Idaho ?... Même s'il est profond, il est tout de même moins impressionnant (pour le peu que j'en ai vu) que GC.... ?
Donc, pour le moment... je me dis (comme à l'accoutumée) que l'on ne peut pas tout voir, et qu'il faut faire des choix.... Quitte à revenir, n'est-ce pas ? On a le "virus" de toutes manières...

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
