Hello everyone, We’re heading to Vietnam for 14 nights over the Christmas holidays as a family of four—I haven’t booked anything yet. I’d love your insights on Halong Bay (or Lan Ha Bay). We’re torn between going or not and spending an extra night in Ninh Binh (or somewhere else you’d recommend! Somewhere with a more picturesque vibe) given the late-December weather and cost (which agency do you recommend?). The upside might be that we’ll be there during the low season, so maybe fewer tourists? (Even though it’d be New Year’s Eve night.) Here’s our itinerary: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City around 1 p.m. 2nd night in HCMC (no time for the Mekong Delta ☹️) Flight to Da Nang 3 nights in Hoi An Bus to Hue, 1 night in Hue City visit, overnight train to Ninh Binh 2 or 3 nights in Ninh Binh? Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay? 2 nights in Hanoi Departure Thank you so much in advance for your invaluable tips!

I really loved Thailand, but it was too touristy for my taste. So I'm hesitating about going back and wondering if Cambodia or Vietnam would be less crowded with tourists...

We’re traveling as a family of three adults for the holidays. After several iterations, here’s the itinerary we’re considering. We’d thought about including Bac Ha or Mai Chau, but in the end, we wanted to avoid excessive travel and rushing around. That’s not our style—we’d rather see less but have time to enjoy what we visit at a relaxed pace. We’ll definitely be back (in a better season) to see some of what we’ll miss this time. Just to note: we’re not motorbike riders, and we’re not the type to start our days at dawn and keep going until nightfall. We go at the pace of the day’s mood and energy. My questions: - Thoughts on the itinerary? - Ninh Binh: where’s the best place to stay to explore mostly on foot, by bike, or by taxi? - Cat Ba to Ninh Binh route: is it better to arrange it through one of our accommodations (departure or arrival) or handle it ourselves? - For the return day between Ninh Binh and Hanoi, I’d like to visit some sights rather than make a direct trip, since we’ll already spend enough time in Ninh Binh and Hanoi. I was thinking of the Perfume Pagoda and possibly Quang Phu Cau. But we’d need a car for the day. Is it better to organize in advance or on the spot? In Hanoi or Ninh Binh? Any driver recommendations? Price ideas? Other suggestions for things to see along the way?

Nous sommes déjà partis en août en Martinique et à Cancun, il y a eu très peu de pluie. Mais comme c'est un autre coin du monde… on ne sait pas

On recherche des vacances en Asie car c'est moins cher qu'en France et en Europe. Nous n'aimons pas l'Europe et nous partons souvent aux usa mais l'été prochain nous aurons un budget plus serré.

Nous recherchons le coté plages, mer chaude et visites.

Hi, We’ve planned a week in the delta, but sometimes I wonder if that’s not too much… We’ll be there in early February, and the idea is to take a taxi straight from Saigon Airport to Ben Tre. I’m counting on 3 nights to recover and adjust after the long trip. Then I was thinking of Sadec, Can Tho, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, and back to Saigon for 3 nights before a flight to Hoi An. We’ve got 6 weeks total, so we have a bit of time. After reading different travel stories, the destinations in the delta seem a bit repetitive—I keep seeing the same excursions. On the other hand, I also think having time is a chance to get to know the local life a little better. My question really comes down to this: for those of you who travel at a relaxed pace, do you have any tips? I’ve heard the floating markets aren’t that interesting anymore. Also, motorbikes aren’t our thing. Thanks

I couldn’t find any recent posts on this topic, so I thought I’d create a new one. We’ve just started planning our family trip to Vietnam this coming August. We’d like to travel from North to South, starting in Hanoi and ending in Ho Chi Minh.

Usually, we rent a car when we arrive and manage on our own. But I get the feeling that in Vietnam, it’s more complicated... It seems like the only option we have is to rent a car with a driver? Is that really the case?

I’m thinking of starting with a cruise in Halong Bay since we arrive on my partner’s birthday, and I wanted a beautiful setting to celebrate it. So, is the option of having a driver wait for 2 days while we’re on the cruise really feasible?

The rest of the itinerary isn’t planned at all yet. I’d love to hear your tips. We’re traveling from August 8th (morning) to the 26th (afternoon).

Est il gênant de porter un pantalon style treillis camouflage lors d'un voyage au Vietnam, Laos et Cambodge, tant en ville qu'à la campagne (et éventuellement visiter des temples vêtus ainsi)? Bonjour à tous, Je me casse la tête sur comment organiser nos journées libres sans agence à Hoi An et Hué. A Hoi An, nous serons 2 jours et nuits au Hoi An Chic. J’avais pensé visiter la vieille ville un matin tôt. Est ce qu’une visite à pied avec un guide local nous permettrait de mieux apprécier la ville? Par la suite, quoi faire: tous les groupes organisés semblent faire le même type de visites des villages et boutiques d’artisans en vélo...Le vélo, ça nous plairait bien mais je ne veux pas me rendre dans les endroits les plus touristiques... Et la plage, il y en a une qui est mieux dans le coin, propre et pas trop bondée ou bruyante? Nous serons à Hoi An en mars, un mardi et mercredi.

Idem pour Hué. Nous y serons presque 2 jours complets, car prenons le train de nuit pour Ninh Binh à 21h30. Par contre, nous y sommes un vendredi et samedi... Les agences proposent toute la visite de la citadelle ET des tombeaux (2-3) dans la même excursion. On aurait voulu faire ce type de visites sur les 2 jours, prendre plus notre temps pour les visites et en faire une visite de toute une journée en combinant bateau, ou vélo.. On pourrait visiter alors la citadelle et cité interdite par nous- mêmes le lendemain ou doit on aussi prendre un tour guidé avec une agence ?

Avez vous le nom d’une agence locale intéressante pour ce type de visites ? Des suggestions? On va prendre 1 journée en plus avec chauffeur entre Hoi An et Hué pour aller visiter My Son, musée Cham à Danan, montagne de marbre...

Bonjour, je pars 15 jours au nord du Vietnam fin février. J'arrive à Hanoï comme tout le monde ou presque (2j), puis après je pensais me rendre sur Car Ba, puis Ninh Binh et Mai chau. Nous allons effectuer un voyage au Vietnam fin octobre à mi novembre.

Nous arrivons au Nord et descendons vers le sud.

Nous souhaitons pour finir le voyage ce poser sur une île 4 à 5 jour. Nous hésitons entre koh rong et phu quoc.

Phu quoc semble plus accessible étant déjà dans le sud du Vietnam mais selon mes commentaires lu cette ile s'est très devellope et donc a perdu du charme, beaucoup de saletés... contrairement à l'île de koh rong qui semble plus paisible et avec de très belle plage.

Si des personnes sont aller à l'un ou les deux, je suis preneuse d'avis...

Est-ce quelqu'un peut me dire pourquoi ils manque de franchise à ce point ?

J'ai fait 2 voyages, j'y ai passé plusieurs mois, j'en ai jamais rencontré un seul d'honnête, j'en viens à me demander si ils connaissent ce terme.

Souvent c'est bête. Dernier exemple en date. Je demande à une copine ou plutôt pas en tout cas je ne doit pas être son ami malgré que sa mère me dise qu'elle aime m'avoir en ami si un n° est son Zalo. C'est pas dur de me dire oui ou non ou oui mais je ne m'en sert plus (vrai ou pas) et bien non elle a lu mais pas répondu, sa mère pareil.Elles utilisent les mêmes compte, c'est compliqué de savoir à qui je parle. Elle veux pas m'ajouter sur Zalo mais en même temps elle ne veux pas me mentir donc elle ne réponds pas.

J'ai pris cette exemple car c'est le plus récent mais en gros c'est ça : ne pas répondre, ne pas être honnête pour ne pas blesser. Ça part peut-être d'un bon sentiment mais c'est flagrant qu'ils ne sont pas honnête, ça me blesse encore plus.

De retour de Hoi an après 18 jours de séjour. Vie normale dans les quartiers viêt, pas du tout dans le centre historique et autour. Nombreux hôtels pour touristes étrangers fermés, restos pareil. De ce que je connais et apprécie, le Co Mai de Didier Corlou ne rouvre que le 1 juillet, Dao Tien, Bazard, Streets, Little Tokyo fermés ; sont ouverts Secret Garden, Good Morning Vietnam, Mix (qui a déménagé au 70 Lê Loi), Ganesh et l'excellent petit jap Samurai Kitchen, où on se régale vraiment (pas de sushi ni sashimi).

Deux belles découvertes à An Bang :

- Un nouvel hôtel super, le Daisy An Bang. 14 chambres dont 2 Famille, resto en terrasse et piscine. Belle plage aménagée à 40 m, assez éloignée de celle de An Bang pour ne pas être trop entouré. En plus, c'est moins cher que l'Aira, car celui-ci est déclaré "Boutique", donc cher alors que le Daisy, bien moins cher, est aussi bien. 43 euros le twin, 48 la double, 65 la triple et 100 la Famille. Pour trouver, tourner à droite au coin de l'Aira, tout droit et c'est au fond de la ruelle, qui arrive sur un T.

- Une pizzeria divine sur la plage, la Luna d'Automno. Très grand choix de pizzas au feu de bois, les meilleures que j'ai mangées depuis que je suis en Asie du SE ; j'ai dégusté une amatriciana et une capretta (avec fromage de chèvre) divines (plus une bière à la pression ayant le même goût qu'une Blanche de Namur) et un service parfait.

Et une autre découverte, passionnante celle-là, la Distillerie d'Indochine, ouverte par 3 jeunes Français en 2018. Ils fabriquent un rhum blanc, le Sampan, d'une telle qualité qu'il a déjà obtenu plusieurs premiers prix internationaux et est exporté dans le monde entier de Paris à Tokyo. Visite guidée très intéressante de 9h à 17h tous les jours sauf lundi : explication détaillée de la fabrication par le technicien français, dégustation au bar de leurs 3 types de rhum et de cocktails ; vous pouvez faire votre propre mélange ; on vous donne en partant une bouteille de 30 cl par personne, rhum blancc, cocktail ou votre propre mélange. Derrière, belle maison avec piscine sur pelouse. 3 chambres au rez-de-chaussée et un grand apartement en étage, avec terrasse vue campagne et mer, grand salon-cuisine ouverte avec alcôve un lit double, une chambre double et une salle de bain. Vous pouvez louer toute la villa (10 personnes max) ou par unité; pas de repas.

Exceptional floods occurred last week in central Vietnam, in the Hoi An and Hue regions. These areas get a lot of rain every year, but this time it's historically devastating.

The images are striking, horrifying, and surreal for those of us—like me—who walked these beautiful streets not long ago: the old town of Hoi An completely submerged, water up to the rooftops, the Japanese Bridge barely peeking out of the water... In Hue, the flag monument in front of the Imperial City entrance was nothing more than an island...

Stay strong to our Vietnamese friends. And a strong warning to all tourists: avoid these regions. The water levels are receding, but more rain is on the way...

Hi everyone, We have a chance to stop in Hanoi on our way from Japan back to France. We arrive on Tuesday, May 12th around 2 PM and leave for France on Saturday, May 16th around 10 PM. I’d like to do a 2-day cruise in Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay, then either 2 days in Ninh Binh or 1 day. - 12/05: Hanoi - 13/05: cruise - 14/05: end of cruise and head to Tam Coc - 15/05: sightseeing - 16/05: early departure for Hanoi, day in Hanoi, then flight to France at 10 PM We don’t want to be overwhelmed by crowds of tourists and prefer to be on our own.

I'd love to get some suggestions for central Vietnam in February for seniors. We'd like to stay in one place, near a beach, and visit the surrounding areas. Then after a month, we'd head to the south of the country.

Back from Dong Van Big plus: a brand-new highway between Hanoi airport and Tuyen Quang, halfway between Hanoi and Ha Giang. The speed limit is usually 50 km/h, but it still saves time.

In Ha Giang, the Truong Xuan Hotel (Ha Giang Resort) has gone downhill. Stay at the gorgeous guesthouse (varnished wooden bungalows with panoramic terrace and excellent meals) run by Mr. WIN (03 64 86 67 66) in Thôn Tha village, 5 kilometers before Ha Giang. If it's full, try next door at Mr. Cay’s place—also bungalows, but with a less stunning view: 09 79 76 94 67.

Dong Van has become so popular that there are now over 200 hotels and guesthouses (only one existed 5 years ago). I stayed at my usual spot, the Hoang Ngoc, which now has an elevator, but it’s gotten expensive (450,000 VND). Instead, check out one of the two 2-star hotels across the street.

On the other hand, dining options have really improved. The excellent Green Karst (one of the servers, Mr. Hung, is also a French-speaking guide) has two locations—one on the main street and another a bit uphill to the left. Go to the latter.

I revisited Lung Cu, still just as spectacular. There are now small electric trains that take you up to the viewpoint (30,000 VND per person round trip). The Hmong King’s Palace in Sa Phin is still standing strong. Small shops to the left of the staircase—the closest one is run by a descendant of the king, actually a traditional costume chief.

There’s a lovely guesthouse at the top of Ma Pi Leng, run by a super-friendly Hmong guy in a beret (a French legacy) who speaks decent French. The terrace overlooks the Nho Qué River canyon. 250,000 VND for two, breakfast included (dinner is 200,000 VND).

Hi there, I’ve found so many tips and reviews on this forum, so it’s my turn to contribute a little. We spent just over two weeks with our family, with the following itinerary: - Hanoi: 5 days - Halong Bay: 3 days and 2 nights - Tam Coc: 3 days - Mai Chau: 2 days - Sapa: 3 days We got around by bike, scooter, Grab, and bus. Our main accommodations were homestays and hotels in Hanoi. We visited lots of museums, temples, and neighborhoods in Hanoi. We did a 2-day, 1-night trek in Sapa with May, a Hmong local, without going through an agency. A few small regrets: the weather was overcast, and we couldn’t make it to Fansipan, but nothing major 😅. We also couldn’t find transport to get from Sapa to Mu Cang Chai. Other than that, this trip will stay in our memories for the kindness of the Vietnamese people, the connections we made, the food (street food, homestays...), the coffee 😋, the landscapes, and how easy it was to get around...
