Today, we started looking into traveling in April 2026, either to Chile or Argentina. It’s our first trip to South America. I’ve only been to French Guiana once, about ten years ago, for the space center. In recent years, we’ve usually gone to Asia during the spring holidays.
Based on the flight tickets I’ve found, two arrival and departure options are available: - Arriving in Buenos Aires and departing from Salvador de Bahia. - Arriving in Santiago, Chile, and still departing from Salvador de Bahia.
We’re considering flying business class on the outbound flight so we arrive a bit more rested. The travel class might influence our choice between itinerary A or B.
We’d like to spend two days at Iguazu Falls (both the Argentine and Brazilian sides), which explains the departure from Brazil.
Initially, we thought about arriving in Buenos Aires and staying in Argentina before heading to Iguazu. However, the itinerary forces us to go back through Buenos Aires.
We love nature. The El Calafate region seems to offer beautiful, easily accessible landscapes. Maybe there’s another area we should prioritize.
Here are two itineraries—what do you think? I know it’s short, but we can’t add any more days. We’ll have to make it work.

My plan: - Take a boat from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales (4-5 days) - Torres del Paine National Park (2-3 days) - Bus from Puerto Natales to Ushuaïa (1-2 days) - Exploring around Ushuaïa (3-4 days) - Cruise from Ushuaïa to Punta Arenas (Oct 31 - Nov 4) - Rent a vehicle and head back up to Puerto Montt by around December 10, which is about 35 days total, via Los Glaciares, El Chaltén, Patagonia NP, Caleta Tortel, Villa O’Higgins, Puerto Río Tranquilo, Bahía Exploradores, Cerro Castillo NP, Coyhaique, Queulat NP, Chaitén, Pumalín NP, and Hornopirén NP.
My goal is to enjoy nature and do some hiking.
I’ll be in Torres del Paine around October 20—is the weather manageable for day hikes at that time?
30-35 days from Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt? That’s about 3,600 km. Is this timeframe doable to enjoy the scenery without rushing? If I arrive in the north earlier, it’s no big deal—I’ll just explore more spots above Puerto Montt.
Now, about the vehicle... I’m torn between a car + tent (regular car with a tent on top) and a small van. Is this enough for the Carretera Austral or unpaved roads? Or would a 4x4 be better? I’m not an experienced 4x4 driver—I’ve only driven occasionally to give the main driver a break on easy sections. A van is tempting for the comfort. Are there any rental options for slightly modified cars or ones where you can sleep, like a Kangoo?

Le voyage en Amérique du Sud se prépare, départ fin septembre 2020 pour 5 mois. Embarquement de mon pick up avec cellule ultra plate dans un conteneur direction Montevideo. Puis je pique au sud, direction Ushuaïa. C'est là que j'ai une interrogation comment remonter au Nord du Chili pour aller au sud de la Bolivie? Deux itinéraires possibles qui parfois se croisent la Ruta 40 en Argentine ou la Carretera Austral au chili?
Peut-être certains ont fait les deux et leur avis serait sûrement intéressant.

Ma fiancée et moi même avons fraichement débarqués sur le continent, en Guyane, il y a 2 mois. Initialement nous avions prévu, pour début 2020, de se faire un road-trip rando et faune au Costa Rica mais avec notre déménagement surprise à Cayenne on s'est finalement dit que ça risquait d’être un petit peu redondant avec la Guyane (Foret tropicale, jaguar, perroquets tout ça tout ça...). D'où l'Argentine ! 😉 Enfin plus précisément la Patagonie.
Nous projetons donc de partir 3 semaines en Argentine entre Février et mi-Mars.
L'idée serait de faire un road-trip de 2 semaines et demi en Patagonie, en van si possible, et de finir par un aller-retour de 2-3 jours aux chute d’Iguaçu.
Le mieux semble d'arriver à El Calafate, d'y louer un van et faire une boucle avec El Chalten, si possible Torres del paine, puis descendre sur la terre de feu et Ushuaïa.
Je voulais rapidement voir avec ceux qui ont déjà visité cette région, si ça semble réalisable ? Est-ce que vous avez des loueurs de vans à conseiller ou autres conseils en tout genre ?

I’d like to meet a Mapuche community in the Lake District during my upcoming trip to Chile. I’ve been given several offers, but the prices are way too high (nearly 1100 € for 2 days/3 nights). Even though the advertised program sounds interesting, I’m hoping there are other ways to connect with a Mapuche community.
I’m open to any ideas on the topic!

Nous sommes allés cet été avec ma femme et ma fille de 18 mois parcourir l'ouest canadien pour 3 semaines, et je commence déjà à penser à notre futur voyage. Nous sommes déjà allés (sans la petite toutefois) en Islande, Guadeloupe, Slovénie, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Croatie, Sicile... Cependant, j'ai quelques questions : - Equateur, Pérou ou Chili : est-ce possible avec un jeune enfant de 18 mois ? Notamment à cause de l'altitude et le côté sanitaire. - Peut-on combiner sur 3 semaines, Equateur/Galapagos - Pérou/Bolivie - Chili (autre)/Patagonie ? - Quelle est la meilleure période pour chacun ? - En budget, combien faut-il prévoir par jour (nourriture et logement avec 2 chambres) ? - Pour les billets d'avion, combien ça coûte par personne aller/retour pour les meilleures périodes ? - Outre la rando (nous avons l'habitude de randonner, comme en Islande, dans les Rocheuses canadiennes, le Stromboli, bivouac dans les Pyréenées...), quelles sont les activités que nous pourrions faire avec des enfants en bas âge ? - Enfin, est-il possible d'envisager ces pays sans pour autant changer de lieu d'hébergement tous les jours (pas comme en Islande, et avec des enfants, c'est plus compliqué) ?

Je prépare mon voyage au Chili et je dois quitter santiago par un vol tôt le matin (6H00) quel quartier me conseillez vous sachant que je dois être à l'aéroport au moins 2 heures avant et que je souhaite la veille passer une soirée agréable sur santiago centre ville. Suis donc preneur d'infos sur logement et éventuels transferts sur aéroport à partir de 3H30 du matin... Merci à tous.

voici 2020, et contente de commencer à prévoir mon voyage pour le mois d'aout septembre,
l'année dernière je suis partie au Pérou et Bolivie, c'était je crois mon plus beau périple tant la culture avec l'amitié rencontrée fut exceptionnelle, il s'agissait d'un challenge pour moi, monter à 4200 m d'altitude, ne m'a fatiguée bien au contraire, malgré une bronchite. pour dire à paris, j'ai moins de tonus, donc il faut que je reparte.
voici ma question, selon vous vous prendriez un vol pour l'argentine, puis chili ou le contraire ?

Nous avons opté pr des vacances tranquilles si bien que nous avons pris un chouette appart à Con Con et un autre à Los Molles. Ce n'est pas la première fois que nous venons au Chii (7 fois pr moi), mais la question que je pose, au vu des événements qui ont secoué le pays, est de savoir si les petits magasins fonctionnent normalement et les restos aussi (mon fils ne quitte pas son bled et n'a d'infos que sur son coin). Celà fait un mois que je suis au Chili. J'ai mis une carte SIM chilienne dans mon téléphone (Honor, Huawei). Je n'ai pas enregistrer mon téléphone à temps (<1mois). Celui-ci est donc bloqué et n'accepte plus aucune carte.
Que faire? Je suis allée sur le site multibanda.cl pour commencer les démarches mais je me trouve bloqué par la page erreur Huawei...
J'ai fais plusieur recherche et je trouve que des sites proposants des services payants...

I'm just starting to plan a two-week trip I'd like to take with my wife in early May.
This trip would include the Atacama Desert, which I was lucky enough to visit alone once and would love to experience again with her.
But I'd like to add one or two other places to visit, keeping in mind that we're much more into nature than cities.
I was thinking about part of adjacent Bolivia... but since we'll have already seen quite a few stunning high-altitude lakes around Atacama, what would be some interesting and very different spots?
We would have loved to include Peru as well, but it might be tricky to combine in just two weeks.
I'll go through the many posts on this forum, but if any of you have some tempting ideas for this time of year (late April - early May), I'm all ears.

This coming November, I’ll be joining my family who lives in Villarrica, and I’d love to take the opportunity to climb the volcano.
I’ve been dreaming of doing it with my 16-year-old little brother, who’s in excellent physical shape and very athletic.
However, after checking out the "reputable" booking sites, I noticed that most guides systematically refuse anyone under 18, with no possibility of an exception—even though I’d be fully prepared to take full responsibility.
I think that’s really too bad.
Do any of you know if there are any serious agencies or guides who accept young people who are at least 16?

Also, do I need to do this only for the phone that will have a local SIM card? Or do I also need to do it for my phone that will probably have an eSIM?
With a local SIM or eSIM, will we still be able to use our French SIM card with an international plan?

Je vais finir mon trajet en Bolivie par le Sud Lipez (en partant de Tupiza, et en arrivant à Uyuni), et j'aimerais me rendre de Uyuni à San Pedro de Atacama au Chili. J'ai trouvé des bus sur internet mais très peu d'informations dessus (tarifs, meilleur compagnie), savez-vous comment se passe le passage de la frontière ? De plus, je dois ensuite me rendre à Antofagasta, mais je ne trouve aucune information sur internet puisque que les sites que j'ai trouvé permettent de réserver les bus à peine 3 semaines à l'avance. Savez-vous si il y a des compagnies locales qui font ce trajet ?

Je ne vais pas être le seul à poser cette question, mais nous devons partir 1 petit
mois dans la région des lacs et bien entendu, mon inquiétude est grande compte
tenu des évènements actuels. Nous partons le 3 Novembre. Arrivée à Santiago le
soir vers 22 heures . Nuit à l'hôtel Ibis et départ en bus le lendemain matin pour Témuco ou nous
resterons dans cette région pendant 2 semaines, puis 1 semaine de plus dans la
région de La Séréna.
Est il prudent de se rendre dans ce pays ? Nous ne faisons que transiter par Santiago.
Pour nôtre 6 ème trip en Amérique du Sud, c'est pas de chance.
Nous avons bien entendu les billets d'avion, les réservation de voiture et d'hôtels. Enfin
bref...la totale.

My rentals are with Figal in Punta Arenas, Econautos in Arica, and Chilean Rent a Car in Temuco, and all of them want the deposit on a credit card. For me, deferred debit *should* work, but I’ve read comments saying the opposite.
How’s it actually working on the ground with these rental companies right now? Will a deferred debit card work, or not at all?
In France, banks don’t issue credit cards, right—or am I mistaken?

we’ll be in Calama at the end of March 2026, and I’m looking for a reliable car rental there for a 7-day road trip to Salta, Argentina. But I’m struggling with the car rental agencies in Calama because the reviews can be scary. I saw Gyg, which has great ratings, but I’m a bit wary (5/5 from 59 reviews—either the guy’s amazing or it’s fake...), but I can’t find any recent reviews on VF in general.
For Punta Arenas, I booked with Dachelet and didn’t have any issues with email exchanges.

Assuming our flight takes off, we’re leaving on September 10th... On the 30th, we need to go to Valparaiso by bus—round trip in one day. I tried booking tickets on either Turbus or Pullman from the Alameda station, but neither site lets us enter our nationality because it’s not listed in the dropdown. Is it really necessary to book the bus tickets online, or can we just grab them the morning of—or even 48 hours ahead at the station? Thanks! Odile

I booked a car with Sixt from Temuco to Puerto Montt from 01/27/25 to 02/17/25.
On Saturday, I got an email canceling the reservation.
But the reservation is still showing up on the website (as of this morning at 9:30 AM).
Can’t reach Sixt Chile.
Sixt France is also in the dark (they can’t contact Chile either).
Has anyone heard anything about this?

j'ai vue des compagnies ferry (Navimag) . pour les vols depuis paris après je sais pas où on arrive ? La perfide la moins froide aussi qu'il vaut mieux pour y aller. enfin un peu dans le vague pour l'instant.
