I’m planning a safari and I’m torn between Kenya and Tanzania. I’ve read quite a few articles online, and one in particular really helped me see things more clearly. I’m now leaning more toward Kenya for its authentic vibe and local culture, but I’d love to hear some opinions before making my final decision.

Have any of you hesitated between these two destinations? Even better, has anyone done a safari in both countries? What were the factors that tipped the scales for you? I’d love to hear all your experiences!

Who can help us decode the rates offered by agencies? - Park entry: how much per person? Does it vary by age? Are the rates different depending on the park? - Cost of the driver and a guide? - Is accommodation in the park taxed? - Do we need to budget for a tip?

Hi everyone, I’m planning a two-week trip to Tanzania at the end of December and beginning of January, including 3 or 4 days in Zanzibar. But after reading some posts about the island, I’m wondering if it’s really worth it.

Are the beaches on the mainland just as idyllic as Zanzibar’s? I’ve also seen there are other islands, like Mafia Island, which is less touristy.

Another question: for my arrival, I don’t want to stay in Dar es Salaam, as big cities don’t really appeal to me. Would Bagamoyo be a good base, or would you recommend somewhere else?

To give you more details, I’m not traveling with a tour operator—I’m more of a backpacker and prefer local transport.

Dans le cadre de mon organisation d'un safari avec Philipo Kimgoni, j'aurais voulu savoir quelles ont été les expériences de lecteurs du forum lors de la visite de tribus au Lac Eyasi.

J'avoue être un peu réservé sur ce que je lis là-dessus, notamment ici même un message de 2018 de Rotsaka. Ayant fait ce genre d'expériences ailleurs, je ne suis pas trop à l'aise avec les visites organisées à des "tribus" autochtones, d'abord à cause du côté très organisé, souvent sous couvert d'authenticité et je me dis toujours que ce n'est pas nécessairement très favorable à la préservation de cultures rares et encore très fermées de voir défiler des touristes toute l'année. Mais en même temps celle-ci est peut-être réellement très différente? D'autre part je ne vois pas forcément ce que nous ferions à la place avant de rentrer à Arusha, quelles sont les alternatives, ou alors un jour de plus au Serengeti ou Ngorongoro mais j'imagine que le prix augmenterait drastiquement.

Moi et mon amie sommes intéressés pas un voyage en Tanzanie pour une durée de 15jours courant juin... Nous pensions faire un peu de safari et un peu de visite (plage, farniente, ville)... Jusque la tout va bien me diriez vous...

Nous sommes entré en contact avec une agence pour le safari et la nous avons été surpris, 2000€/pers pour 4 jours de safari en 4x4 privé ! Cela équivaut à notre budget par personne pour les 15 jours !!

Nous savions que ça pouvais être un coût mais de la à 500€ la journée par personne, je trouve ça beaucoup !

Ma question est la suivante, avec notre budget de 2000€ par personne, un safari en première partie puis terminer par quelques jours en hôtel bord de plage pour de la farniente, est ce réalisable ??

Once again, I’m back looking for advice

So, here’s the thing: in September, I’m planning a trip to Africa. There’ll be four of us—my husband, my 24-year-old daughter, my 20-year-old son, and me.

I’ve had this idea in my head for a while, but now it’s starting to feel real. The tricky part is that I’m on team "I organize my trip without an agency and handle things on the spot." But here’s the catch—my husband, who’s usually up for anything, doesn’t want to hear about a do-it-yourself trip. From what I’ve gathered, only Namibia allows that if I’m not mistaken. But if it’s possible in Tanzania (or maybe Kenya), I think I could convince him.

Anyway, here’s my first double question—more will probably follow! Can you travel without an agency in Tanzania? If not, which agency would you recommend, given that I live in Belgium?

En février 2020, j'ai acheté des billets d'avion (2 personnes) pour un séjour en Tanzanie du 31 octobre au 11 novembre 2020. J'ai également contacté Juma Sumbi qui m'a établi un devis qui nous convenait. En raison du Covid 19, je n'ai pas envoyé d'acompte à Juma mais je lui ai dit que ce devis me convenait. Le vol pour Kilimandjaro (Air France départ de Paris) a été remplacé par un vol Lyon Amsterdam Kilimandjar de KLM. Retour inchangé.

J'ai recontacté Juma il y a 2 semaines par mail pour savoir s'il pourrait assuré sa prestation. nJe n'ai, à ce jour, pas eu de réponse. J'ai essayé de l'appeler par What'app, sans succès, numéro non reconnu puis appel direct. Cette fois j'ai eu un message en anglais disant de réessayer car numéro indisponible pour l'instant.

Je pense que, malheureusement, Juma a fait les frais de la situation due au Covid.

Je cherhce donc à savoir s'il est envisageable de faire ce séjour, si des voyageurs se rendent en Tanzanie actuellement et des coordonnées de guides francophones travaillant comme Juma Sumbi.

L’avenir de la Selous Game Réserve, réserve de gibier du Selous, s’est encore obscurci. Après le braconnage quasi industriel (la Tanzanie aurait perdu les deux tiers de ses éléphants en quatre ans, après l’annonce de mines d’uranium dans la réserve et du barrage hydro-électrique dans les gorges Stiegler, l’inscription de la réserve au patrimoine menacé de l’humanité, la réserve a été scindé pour créer au nord dans 30 000 km2 le Nyerere National Park, ainsi nommé en l’honneur du premier président de la Tanzanie, le Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Il semblerait donc que ce qui était un projet est devenu une réalité mais je trouve très peu d'informations récentes.

Avez-vous des informations plus complètes comme dates de mise en exécution effective, fees, tracé du parc, etc. Pour ceux qui reviennent de la réserve/parc, avez-vous remarqué des différences ?

I’m planning a Tanzania trip combined with Zanzibar for 15 days (8+6 days). The setup: a private trip for two, in July or August.

We’re heading to Tanzania primarily for the safari experience—the animals, photography, and stunning landscapes. The classic Northern Circuit for beginners is Arusha / Tarangire / Ngorongoro / Serengeti.

But that’s a lot of driving if we do the full loop... and I’ve read it’s better to take your time in the parks rather than spend all day in transfers (saw that in Lonely Planet).

So, beginner’s question... Do you think Arusha / Tarangire / Ngorongoro is a good alternative? We’d skip the legendary Serengeti but could spend more time in the parks and avoid long stretches of rough roads (prioritizing paved routes instead)... Maybe adding Lake Manyara to the mix.

For context, we did Kruger about ten years ago (5 days self-drive).

Hello everyone, My husband and I are planning our honeymoon in Tanzania, hoping to go on a safari and spend a few days in Zanzibar, or even on Mafia Island. We’d like to work with a local agency, both for financial reasons and because we usually travel backpacker-style, adapting activities as we go. Apparently, for safaris, it’s better to plan a bit ahead. We’re thinking of going in September–October 2026. My mother has health issues that could worsen, so I’d like to have a backup plan in case I need to cancel at the last minute. Bonjour à tous, J'ai réservé un véhicule pour un séjour en Tanzanie, J'ai malheureusement perdue ma maman et je n'avais bien entendu pas le coeur à partir en vacances, J'ai dû annuler toutes mes réservations ... Tout le monde a été compréhensif au vu de la situation hormis safari 4x4 hire qui n'a pas voulu me rembourser quoi que ce soit ! J'ai perdu ma maman je peut perdre 1000 euros mais je trouve cela inacceptable de ne pas avoir de coeur à ce point ...c'est lamentable !!

I booked a vehicle for a trip to Tanzania, I unfortunately lost my mom and I didn’t hear the heart to go on vacation, I had to cancel all my reservations ... Everyone was understanding in view of the situation except safari 4x4 hire who did not want to reimburse me anything! I lost my mom I can lose 1000 euros but I find it unacceptable not to have a heart at this point ...c is pathetic!!

Arrival in Stone Town – 1 night

Jambiani – 6 nights. Activities with a guide: Mnemba, Safari Blue Mangrove, Nakupenda sandbank, etc. Without a guide, we’re thinking of renting bikes on the beach, visiting Maalum Cave, Jozani Forest ??? (no strong opinions), N’tende ??? What do you think? Quad biking?

Nungwi – 3 nights, mostly chilling and a sunset boat ride.

Last day: on the way to the airport, visit Stone Town and a spice farm.

For Jambiani, I was considering Garden Beach Bungalow. Any other accommodation recommendations?

I’m planning a self-drive trip to Tanzania (either September or October).

This route won’t include any of the usual parks you hear about everywhere (too expensive, too crowded, too touristy).

The idea is to explore Tanzania more for its landscapes, beaches, and hiking. A little wildlife spotting, sure, but that’s not the main goal.

Here’s the itinerary I’m considering:

(Arrival and departure from Kilimanjaro Airport)

Night 1: Southern gate of Arusha NP

Night 2: Northern gate of Arusha NP

Night 3: Enduimet

Night 4: Same (near the gates of Mkomazi NP)

Night 5: Mkomazi NP

Night 6: Mkomazi NP

Nights 7-8-9: Pangani or Tanga

Nights 10-11-12: Usambara Mountains

Nights 13-14: Foothills of Kilimanjaro

I can’t find much info about Enduimet at all.

So if anyone has any details about this place...

Hi, I went on a safari with a Maasai guide in several national parks in Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Arusha National Park, etc.). There are very few Maasai guides, so it’s pretty special to be able to do a safari with one of them. He doesn’t just explain the animals but also the Maasai culture and can even take you to villages where the Maasai live—not those where you pay $50 to see three Maasai jumping around.

Nous sommes partis 2 semaines en Tanzanie en self-drive l'été dernier en mode "confort": autonomes mais pas de tente (inconfortable) sur le toit, nous avions réservé via notre loueur des tented camps !

Un parcours assez classique: Arusha - Manyara - Ngorongoro - Serengeti et retour.

Nous n'avons pas regretté le choix du style "confort en autonomie". Nous avons bien profité de nos journées sans subir les contraintes logistiques du montage des tentes / gestion des repas.

Voici un petit retour sur les étapes:

ARUSHA (1ère nuit) : Mount Meru Game lodge

Un très bon hébergement d'arrivée. Très sympathique et agréable, proche de l'aéroport. Parfait pour la première (ou la dernière) nuit.

MANYARA (2 nuits) : Lake Manyara Wildlife Camp

Un hébergement moyen: bien placé avec une vue superbe mais dont la gestion manque d'implication.



Le parc par contre mérite qu'on s'y arrête pour ses paysages. Peu fréquenté, on peut le parcourir du nord au sud dans la journée.



NGORONGORO (2 nuits) : Ngorongoro Tortilis

Un super hébergement (une super équipe d'animation). Assez bien placé (suffisamment enfoncé dans la zone du parc pour arriver tôt à l'entrée du cratère et éviter de faire la queue). Attention néanmoins, nous sommes partis tôt, le jour n'était pas levé et la route du cratère a été un calvaire (nuit + brouillard + poussière = risque inutile).



Grosse déception côté animaux dans le cratère. L'été n'est pas la bonne période (la plupart des animaux sont partis), le printemps est le meilleur moment pour y aller. Eu égard au coût, on peut ne pas y aller en été.

CENTRAL SERENGETI (3 nuits) : Serengeti Katikati Tented

Attention, il y a plein de Kati Kati camps dans le Serengeti (plus d'une douzaine, c'est une sorte de chaine !). Nous avons cherché le notre quasiment un jour entier: Kati Kati Kimareshi 1 ! Un super endroit, isolé, intimiste et confortable. Probablement l'hébergement du séjour où nous retournerons volontiers !



Côté parc, c'est l'endroit idéal pour l'observation des animaux (autour de Seronera), notamment les carnivores.



NORTH SERENGETI (3 nuits) : Mara River Serengeti Tanzania Bush Camp

L'accès au Nord a été difficile, les pistes étaient très dures pour la mécanique. Pour le coup, à part pour essayer de voir un "crossing" sur la Mara River, si on manque de temps, le détour n'est pas obligatoire.

Le (seasonal) camp en lui même est très bien.

KARATU (1 nuit) : Rhotia Valley Tented Camp

Juste une étape sur le retour vers Arusha. De belle chambres avec une vue imprenable.



Mais pour le coup, c'est un peu une usine à touristes lors des repas.

Bref, un super voyage dans un pays où il est particulièrement agréable et sécurisant de voyager en autonomie. Les tanzaniens ont été particulièrement aidants lorsque nous étions perdus ou en panne !

My exchange with Julie was great—she took the time to talk with me for an hour on the phone to offer a tailor-made safari.

However, she’s asking me to pay 50% of the trip, or even the full amount. She mentioned paying fewer fees by using Wise.

Do you know this agency? What do you think? I’m really afraid it might be a scam and that my dream could turn into a nightmare.
