Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. We’re considering stopping by Khao Sok but don’t want to do a typical 2D/1N or 3D/2N excursion with an overnight stay on the lake—it’s way out of our budget 🤪. Still, the place seems worth the detour. We’ve planned to spend 2 nights there (arriving in the late afternoon on the first day) and I’d love to do a full-day private boat tour on the lake and a hike (half-day or full-day). Do you think it’s doable to book on the spot if we arrive a bit late on the first day? Or is it better to book in advance? None of the websites for booking these services inspire confidence—I get the feeling it’s a real lottery afterward for getting an interesting and friendly guide. But I’m worried it’ll be the same on-site since everything seems so standardized. Do you have any firsthand experience? Maybe even a Facebook contact or something for a guide? Are the prices still really that expensive if we don’t stay overnight on the lake? I’ll admit I’m not sure if we should even stop there anymore...

My itinerary includes 2 days in Singapore, 2 days in Kuala Lumpur, 2 nights in Malacca, 2 days in Penang, and 4 days in Bali. Originally, I had planned a side trip from Ipoh (1 night) to pass through Cameron Highlands and especially to see Mossy Forest. But I just realized it’s not Taman Negara. So now I’m not sure if I should just cancel this excursion or still go to Mossy Forest. Is Ipoh worth it, Cameron Highlands (knowing I’ve already visited tea plantations in Sri Lanka), and the primary forest? Thanks for your help

My mom and I are heading to Indonesia on July 11, 2025, for a month. We’ll spend 15 days in Borneo (Kalimantan) and 15 days in Sulawesi. We’re traveling with backpacks and really want to meet locals and experience their culture. We have a layover in Singapore before flying to Borneo, but we’re not sure yet which part of the island we’d like to land in.

I’m looking for the most up-to-date info possible because our research results are pretty confusing. Initially, we wanted to focus on the Indonesian side of the island, but we’re finding way more info on the Malaysian side (better tourist infrastructure). We’re feeling a bit lost...

Our priority is a 4-5 day trek max. We also want to connect with an English-speaking guide to explore Borneo’s primary forest and its wildlife. Ideally, we’d like to venture into the island’s center. But we might not have the time (given the lack of infrastructure and long distances—we don’t have 15 days just for a trek) or the physical stamina to get there. Still, we’d love to get off the beaten path and avoid pricey, touristy excursions. From our research, we’ve come across 3-day, 2-night trips on longboats or 4x4s (e.g., orangutans in Tanjung Puting) for 400 to 500 €. But that’s way out of our budget, and we think it’s too expensive. We get that as tourists with higher incomes than locals, we should pay more—but there’s a limit, especially compared to the cost of living in Indonesia. We want to avoid tour operators and crowds of tourists. Our goal is to see what’s left of Borneo’s preserved and wild tropical forest and observe animals in their natural habitat. If we don’t see any during a trek, oh well—we’ll take our chances.

On the Malaysian side, there’s Danum Valley, and on the Indonesian side, places like Gunung Palung, Betung Kerihun, and Kayan Mentarang...

I’m a bit put off by what I found—I think it’s really expensive and it’s not exactly dreamy! We’re not into staying in dorms with shared bathrooms anymore, but in Asia and South America, we’ve always found charming little places for around 30 € a night. Is that impossible in the Philippines? We’re in our sixties, not exactly high-level athletes, but we do travel quite a bit. We don’t like changing hotels every day—we prefer to stay in one central spot and explore the area around it. If we need to move to make the most of it, I think twice max would be fine.

I’m going to contact a French-speaking guide (I read about it on the forum) to get an idea of pricing and options, but I’d really love to hear from people who’ve already stayed there during this period and get some tips on finding accommodations.

I already posted not long ago because I was planning to go to Kota Kinabalu, but there’s been a slight change of plans.

I’m still in Malaysia, but I’ll be staying on the peninsular side, so I need some tips/reviews.

Here’s what I’m planning to do:

- Arrive in Kuala Lumpur on August 16th and do some sightseeing. I saw that you can do a firefly and blue tears tour. Is it worth it? If so, how do you recommend getting there or which agency should I book with?

By the way, do you have any particular recommendations for things to do in Kuala Lumpur?

- Next, I’d like to visit Taman Negara for 2D/1N, but I’m not sure how to get there or which agency to book with to organize everything. Should I figure out how to get there first and then find a guide on the spot? We’d like to do the canopy walkway—is there anything else to do there? I know you used to be able to make your own blowpipe at the village—is that still a thing?

- After that, I’d like to head to the Perhentian Islands. How do we get there? Do I need to go back to Kuala Lumpur to take a bus, or can I leave from Taman Negara? Are there overnight buses? Or should we book the ferry?

I wanted to go there for diving—do you have any reviews or tips on that?

Do you also have any activity recommendations there? Like cooking classes, dance lessons, shows, or great snorkeling spots...

- Then we’d go to Kuala Terengganu. Do you know how to get there? How long do you recommend staying in the city? I think you can do rafting and the Cherating River—is it good, and do you have an agency in mind for that? I’m really not sure if it’s worth stopping in this city.

Is it interesting to visit Kapas Island? Or is it better to go straight from the Perhentian Islands to Tioman?

- Tioman: we really want to go for diving, but again, we’re not sure how to get there. And as always, if you have any activity recommendations, I’m all ears.

From there, I’m not sure yet if I’ll go to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, but I thought there were flights from Tioman to Kuala Lumpur, but I can’t find any.

The goal of the trip is to explore the region before catching a flight to Tokyo at the end. The main difference between my two options is the order in which I’d visit Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos.

Initially, I thought about doing Malaysia > Thailand > Laos > Vietnam > Cambodia, but after looking into it, it’s tricky to get to Tokyo from Cambodia—there’s no direct flight.

Hello, We’re planning our trip for next summer, which will be based in Komodo, then Alor, and back to Bali to catch our international flight. To secure that flight, we’re planning to spend our last two full days (actually 3 nights) in Bali. We’ve already visited Bali twice—first time 30 years ago and the second time 12 years ago—and we don’t want to revisit the must-see spots (and definitely not Ubud; I had a bit of a shock there 12 years ago). What could you recommend for activities and hotel locations? We’re looking for fairly exclusive experiences, not too physically demanding since we’re not as young as we used to be.
