J'envisage un voyage entre Chili et Bolivie d'une dizaine de jours, en août prochain. (nous serons 2) L'idée serait d'atterrir à Santiago, de rejoindre Calama en avion puis San Pedro de Atacama. De là, j'envisage ceci : -quelques excursions à la journée ou demi-journée pour découvrir l'Atacama (vallée de la Lune, lagunes, geysers...) - 3 à 4 jours -un tour vers Uyuni et le salar bolivien avec retour sur San Pedro - 3 à 4 jours Fin de voyage par Calama et Santiago.

Ma question est la suivante : je ne comprends pas la différence de prix que je peux observer entre les agences : si je regarde Tripadvisor et ses propositions, je trouve des excursions autour de San Pedro entre 25 et 80€ et un tour vers Uyuni autour de 180 à 250€ environ. Par contre, si je contacte certaines agences (dont les guides sont francophones et qui sont déjà mentionnées dans diverses discussions de ce forum), j'atteins des prix radicalement plus élevés, se chiffrant en milliers de dollars. Bien sûr, avoir un guide pour soi et non se retrouver avec 4-5 autres "inconnusé" à un prix, qu'il soit francophone aussi, mais malgré tout je m'interroge : en dehors de ces critères et du logement plus ou moins de qualité, le parcours proposé semble souvent tourné autour des mêmes spots... Pouvez-vous m'en dire plus ? Certains ont-ils déjà réalisé une réservation en ligne avec des agences proposant les prix plus "raisonnables" que l'on peut trouver via des sites de type Tripadvisor ??? Je n'ai pas envie de faire en bus : San Pedro de Atacama / Calama (1h30) + Calama / Uyuni (8h) + Uyuni et trip Sud Lipez -- Trop de transport !!!

Hi, we’re planning a round trip from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, to Salta, Argentina, in two months. On the way there, we’ll take the northern route via Susques, Route 27, then 52. But for the return, we were thinking of taking the southern route via San Antonio de los Cobres, Route 51, then 23. Is it similar to the northern route in terms of road surface? How busy is it, and are there gas stations? Basically, should we be worried about doing it in an SUV that’s supposedly 4x4 but has regular road tires and no second spare wheel, obviously... Bonjour, Comme beaucoup, nous n'avons pas la possibilité de prendre trois semaines de congé à une période autre que les mois de juillet et aout 😕 Nous savons que ce n'est pas la meilleure période pour visiter le Chili mais nous avons prévu, tout de même, de passer 4-5 jours à l'Ile de Pâques, une grosse semaine à SPA et dans l'extrême nord, et une grosse semaine dans le nord de la Patagonie. Parmi les excursions classiques de ces deux dernières régions, qu'est ce que nous pourrons et ne pourrons pas faire pendant l'hiver chilien ?

Hi there, I’m planning a trip with my partner (no kids this time—thanks, Grandma!) for two weeks to celebrate her 40th birthday. I’ve been thinking about Chile. We’re looking at leaving around September 18, 2027, starting in the south and returning in early April. Here’s what I had in mind:

8 nights in a van in the Lake District and the start of the Carretera Austral (up to the Chaitén area). We’re set to arrive in Puerto Montt around 2:00 PM. We don’t want to go too far south since we’re planning to explore the heart of Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) with the kids when they’re older. The idea is to spend 3 nights discovering the lakes (up to Cochamó) and 3 nights in Pumalín Park. I’ve also added two transition nights. 7 nights in the Atacama to experience another side of Chile (San Pedro), taking a domestic flight from Puerto Montt to Calama in the early afternoon. We’ll depart for France in the early evening from Santiago.

For our trip to Chile in November, we rented a car from Europcar for our stop in San Pedro de Atacama. We’ll pick up the car at Calama Airport and return it to the agency in San Pedro. We made the reservation through Rentalcars.

The problem is, I just noticed on the booking that it says in the "what you’ll need when picking up the vehicle" section: "Credit card: The card must have sufficient available funds to cover the excess/deposit (which will be blocked on the card for the duration of the rental)." And then it’s written in red: "Cash payments and debit cards are not accepted."

The thing is, we don’t have a credit card—just debit cards (which, by the way, is the case for most people; we just mistakenly call them "credit cards" when they’re actually "debit cards").

I’ve seen cases where the rental company forced people to purchase additional insurance if they didn’t provide a credit card for the deposit, but that was in European countries, and I haven’t found much info about Chile.

Has anyone else run into this issue with Europcar in Calama?

Do you know if they can refuse to give us the car if we don’t have a credit card for the deposit? Just to note, the rental payment has already been debited, and we’ve opted for the "Full Protection" insurance offered by Rentalcars. If they force us to take extra insurance, will it be something beyond this full protection?

Nous nous rendons le mois prochain au Chili.

Nous passerons quelques jours à San Pedro de Atacama avant de faire une excursion de 4 jours dans le sud Lipez en Bolivie. Pour les pesos chiliens, nous effectuerons des retraits sur place avec la carte bancaire mais pour les bolivianos, comment faire pour s'en procurer avant d'entrer en Bolivie ?

Faut-il faire le change en France avant de partir ? Ou est-ce qu'il y a un bureau de change à San Pedro où nous pourrons récupérer des bolivianos ?

Pour info, nous atterrissons à Santiago et reprenons un avion directement pour Calama donc il ne nous sera pas possible de faire le change dans le centre de Santiago.

The National Tourism Service SERNATUR published a small graphic summary of the current situation in the tourism sector for each region of the country on August 14th.

It shows the percentage of operational tourist attractions, accommodations, airports, and bus stations across Chile’s sixteen regions.

As you can see, in several regions, no tourist attractions are currently available. In two regions, only half are open.

(A quick but important note: the small village of San Pedro de Atacama is in the Antofagasta administrative region, not the Atacama region.)

The situation for accommodations, regional airports, and bus stations is relatively better.

Some good news, though—Torres del Paine National Park is expected to gradually reopen starting September 1st.

Nous avons prévu pour 2021 un tour du monde et nous avons environ 3 semaines au chili (hors ile de Paques). Il y a l'air d'avoir énormement de choses à faire et à voir dans l'extreme nord, et en avril ce n'est pas forcément la bonne saison en patagonie.

Notre premier itinéraire ressemble à ça : - Santiago 2 jours - Valparaiso 3 jours - Arica 1 jours - Putre / Parc Lauca / Salar de Surir etc 2 jours - Route jusque Iquique avec Matilla et Pica 1 jour - Iquique 1 jour - San Pedro De Atacama 5 jours - Route jusque Antofogasta 1 jours - Caldera 1 jour - Laguna Santa rosa / Salar Maricunga ... 1-2 jours - 1 journée off quelque part - Puis retour sur Calama pour partir à Uyuni

Est ce trop pour cette région du Chili ? Il est difficile de faire des choix, Ile de Chiloé, Puertto Montt, La patagonie... sur un autre voyage ?

Nous venons de revenir du chili un peu fatigués par le rythme mais c'était un voyage exceptionnel!!! Arrivée à Santiago puis départ pour Puerto Natales pour aller aux glaciers (bateau) et au Parc Torres del Paine. A Puerto Natales, le temps ne nous permettait pas de faire la balade en bateau aux glaciers prévue le premier jour mais notre guide nous a emmené à la grotte du Milaudon ce qui nous a permis de faire le lendemain très tôt le parc national et de revenir pour prendre le bateau à15h30 . Donc, on a tout fait avec le beau temps et c'était magnifique! Retour à Santiago puis Valparaiso. Enfin San Pedro de Atacama et ses merveilles.Terminer par 3 jours à l'île de Pâques est parfait car cela permet de se reposer tout en visitant les sites magnifiques et même de se baigner dans une eau chaude😎

Je vais finir mon trajet en Bolivie par le Sud Lipez (en partant de Tupiza, et en arrivant à Uyuni), et j'aimerais me rendre de Uyuni à San Pedro de Atacama au Chili. J'ai trouvé des bus sur internet mais très peu d'informations dessus (tarifs, meilleur compagnie), savez-vous comment se passe le passage de la frontière ? De plus, je dois ensuite me rendre à Antofagasta, mais je ne trouve aucune information sur internet puisque que les sites que j'ai trouvé permettent de réserver les bus à peine 3 semaines à l'avance. Savez-vous si il y a des compagnies locales qui font ce trajet ?

Pensez-vous qu'il est plus simple de faire un tour du Salar depuis Tupiza jusqu'à San Pedro directement ? Sachant que je souhaite faire l’ascension d'un volcan, est-ce que ce n'est pas un trajet moins commun (donc plus cher) ?

Puis je pique au sud, direction Ushuaïa. C'est là que j'ai une interrogation comment remonter au Nord du Chili pour aller au sud de la Bolivie? Deux itinéraires possibles qui parfois se croisent la Ruta 40 en Argentine ou la Carretera Austral au chili? Peut-être certains ont fait les deux et leur avis serait sûrement intéressant. Hi, we’ll be in Calama at the end of March 2026, and I’m looking for a reliable car rental there for a 7-day road trip to Salta, Argentina. But I’m struggling with the car rental agencies in Calama because the reviews can be scary. I saw Gyg, which has great ratings, but I’m a bit wary (5/5 from 59 reviews—either the guy’s amazing or it’s fake...), but I can’t find any recent reviews on VF in general. For Punta Arenas, I booked with Dachelet and didn’t have any issues with email exchanges. Thanks in advance. Raf.

Une hausse des tarifs de transport en début du mois a provoqué de nombreuses manifestations plus ou moins spontanées dans le métro de Santiago.

Le phénomène a pris de l'ampleur et des pillages de grandes surfaces ont maintenant eu lieu aussi.

L'État d'Urgence a été déclaré, pour le moment, UNIQUEMENT EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA RÉGION MÉTROPOLITAINE, càd Santiago et les environs immédiats.

Mais. des manifestations ont actuellement lieu dans d'autres villes du Chili et la situation pourrait empirer encore.

La situation s'est fort dégradée ces dernières heures.

Restez particulièrement attentifs.

Bonjour, sujet maintes fois traité certes mais nous venons aux dernières nouvelles. Nous souhaitons faire un circuit San Pedro -uyuni et retour sur Calama ( car avion à 19h00)....donc en recherche d une agence raisonnable car jusqu a présent les prix proposés en privés sont à ....3000 euros pour ces 4 jours/3 nuits.... Des idées à nous donner.....peut etre circuit jusqu à uyuni en 3 jours et taxi ou autre transfert uyuni Calama...merci de vos participations.

Nous partons au Chili - Bolivie - Ile de Pâques en février 2020. Nous aurons 8 jours dans la région de SPA & Sud Lipez avant de retourner à Santiago puis sur l'ïle de Pâques.

Nous arrivons à l'aéroport de Calama puis pensions faire 4 jours à SPA pour faire les différents sites puis 4 jours en Bolivie avec une agence (obligatoire a priori). Que me conseillez-vous ? De louer une voiture pour visiter les sites de SPA ou de le faire avec des tours organisés ? Si location de voiture, faut-il la louer à Calama ou à SPA ? Sachant que nous ne pourrons pas l'utiliser pendant l'excursion bolivienne ?

For our trip in September 2025 from mid-September to early October (3 weeks), we’ve planned 8 days in San Pedro, then a transit night in Santiago, 8 days in Chilean Patagonia, and 3 days for Santiago/Valparaíso before heading back. Is it possible to easily explore with a rental car from a lodge based in Puerto Natales, including visiting Torres del Paine National Park? Or does that mean too much driving in a day, or would it be better to plan an overnight stay in the park or nearby?

We applied for our international driver’s permit in January 2025 for September, hoping to get it in time—I checked the forum about this. Regarding the car rental, do we really need a credit card (not debit) in the main driver’s name for the deposit?

How far in advance should we book entry tickets to the national parks for this period?

To avoid spending three weeks in the somewhat chilly Patagonia, we’re planning to head up to Valparaíso and the Atacama Desert. Here’s the itinerary: Arrival in Buenos Aires Flight to El Calafate (4 nights) Bus to Puerto Natales (1 night) Torres del Paine (4 nights) Santiago (1 night) (flight from Puerto Natales) Valparaíso (4 nights) San Pedro de Atacama (5 nights) Santiago (1 night) then flight to Paris I’m wondering whether it’s worth going all the way to Ushuaia. Sure, it’s a legendary destination, but is it as impressive as El Calafate and Torres del Paine? The other option would be to cut one night from Torres del Paine, Valparaíso, and San Pedro, and spend 3 nights in Ushuaia instead. Also, I’m a bit confused about whether an international driver’s permit is required to drive in Argentina and Chile. Hi everyone, does anyone know the agency Ventura Travel Agency (not ventura travel)? After lots of research and quotes, it’s the only one offering Uyuni at a reasonable price while meeting all the criteria: transfer to the border, private-room accommodation, and a very fair rate. Other agencies or guides either offer shared rooms, no border transfer, or prices that are way too high. But I’d love to hear some reviews about this agency. Thanks in advance!
