Nous avons de ne faire que le centre de façon à réserver le nord pour une autre saison et le sud pour une autre année (donc on ne descendrait pas jusqu' Dalat) ! Nous avons épluché le routard et le lonely et parcouru le forum qui regorge d'informations passionnantes ........et c'est le pb car nous ne savons plus comment orienter notre séjour. Aussi je pose les questions en vrac . 1/ ce qui est fixé : arrivé à Danang et direct à Hoi An = 7 jours pour rayonner puis Hué = 4 ou 5 jours ?? (nous aimons prendre notre temps) 2/ Ensuite reste donc 17 ou 18 jours pour faire Kontum, Buon Ma Thuot et remonter vers Da nang en faisant une ou 2 escales sur des plages : Doc let ? Qui Nhon (bai Xep ?)

Que pensez vous de la faisabilité en fonction des temps de transport ? Quelles sont les durées de transports ? N'est-ce pas "redondant" de faire une étape à Kontum et à BMT sachant que nous n'aimons pas faire des escales de moins de 2 jours ? Est-ce possible d'aller en louant une moto visiter seul les villages à la journée ? et les campagnes environnantes ?

Pour la remontée et escale plage (avant retour dans froid et grisaille parisienne) vos avis ?

Hello. In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.

- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).

- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).

- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?

- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.

- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!

- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.

- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.

That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before: - Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

Je n'arrive pas à le situer sur internet malgré l'adresse. Hi, In February, we’d like to visit the Xeo Quyt forest site. On the LP (Lonely Planet), it’s listed near Cao Lanh, but when I look at the map, it seems much closer to Sa Dec. Since we’re planning to stop in Sa Dec during our trip, I’d love to know if there are buses to get to Xeo Quyt. What’s your take on the site itself?

Also, while we’re in HCMC, we’re thinking of doing a "day trip" to the Cu Chi tunnels. I’ve read reviews about Ben Dinh, but almost nothing about Ben Duoc (except that it’s less touristy!). Which one should we choose? Do agencies offer tours to Ben Duoc?

En juillet 2020, nous partons à Ho Chi Minh pour le travail. Ensuite, nous comptons nous rendre à Hanoi d'où nous reprenons le vol international. Nous quitterons Ho Chi Minh ville an avion le samedi matin (ou vendredi soir) pour arriver à Hanoi d'où nous repartirons le mercredi soir. Nous avons dans l'idée de faire une excursion à la baie de Halong durant une journée et voudrions également voir des rizières en terrasse et se balader dedans. Pensez-vous qu'il est possible et raisonnable de faire ce programme en si peu de temps? Nous n'avons pas encore réservé notre vol intérieur donc nous pouvons aussi atterir à un autre endroit plus proche d'une rizière pour n'avoir qu'un trajet vers Hanoï à faire. Quel itinéraire proposeriez vous ? Quel est le moyen de transport à privilégier sachant que nous voyagerons à deux femmes et que nous sommes non-conductrices, tenant compte que ce sera la saison des pluies? A Ho Chi Minh nous avons deux week-ends de libre, nous en consacrerons un pour le delta du Mekong et n'avons encore rien de prévu pour l'autre, y aurait-il des rizières en terrasse dans la région?

Hello, I’ve been to Thailand three times a long time ago, and I’d love to visit neighboring countries too: Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia (while returning to Thailand 😛). The catch is that I’d like to go at the beginning of the year, but I’ve heard that’s peak tourist season for these countries. Ideally, I’d prefer to avoid peak season to save money (I’m not exactly rolling in it) and to be able to travel without reservations—without being forced to take a room in the local "palace" that still has availability because of its exorbitant prices.

From my distant memories of Thailand, I usually paid around the equivalent of 20 € per night (with a hearty breakfast) for a hotel room with a mini-bar.

What are the average prices for this type of accommodation in Thailand and its neighbors during "peak" season these days? Do prices fluctuate a lot depending on the season, or is tourist demand not that different from one season to another, keeping prices relatively stable? Are the chances of finding a "budget" room without a reservation still high, no matter the season, in this part of the world? 😇

I’m planning and organizing a wonderful trip to Vietnam from mid-March to mid-April 2026, traveling independently for a month with my wife to enjoy her new retirement. Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? Actuellement au Vietnam, j’aimerais visiter la baie d’Along, mais je n’ai pas envie de passer une nuit sur un bateau, ni de faire du kayak, ni de pique-niquer sur une île... Je n’ai pas non plus envie de partir pour la journée depuis Hanoi et de passer plus de temps en transport que dans la baie.

Me rendre à Along ou à Cat Ba par mes propres moyens, et ensuite prendre directement un tour pour la journée, tout simplement, ça se fais-tu?

J’ai regardé dans les anciens posts, mais j’ai l’impression qu’absolument tout le monde y va en croisière...

After reading almost all the discussions about Vietnam, I don’t see anything about transportation options for getting from Hue to Danang, then from Danang to Hoi An. Any ideas (train, bus)? From the map, it looks like Danang is close to Hoi An—easily accessible by taxi, right?

Also, after reading lots of comments and websites, I’ve noticed that Danang, aside from being a big developing city, seems to be more about hotels for relaxing on the beach—very laid-back, isn’t it? Not really a place to visit like Hanoi or Hoi An.

Generally speaking, if you have any recommendations for the itinerary or tips, I’d love to hear them.

Hi there, We’re heading to Cambodia for 15 days in February 2026. We’ll spend 3 nights in Siem Reap for the Angkor temples, then check out the floating markets. I’d love to know if Battambang is worth the detour. If so, we’re thinking of taking a ferry across the lake, staying one night, and then flying to the islands for the second week. Which islands would you recommend—Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem—or is there another that’s better for relaxation, downtime, and snorkeling? Thanks for your tips!

We got back enchanted from a 6-week trip to Cambodia! Our itinerary: Kampot - Kampong Chhnang - Battambang - Siem Reap - Kampong Cham - Sen Monorom (Mondulkiri) - Banlung (Ratanakiri) - Kratie - Kampong Thom - Phnom Penh. We traveled by bus, minivan, boat (between Battambang and Siem Reap), overnight bus, scooter, tuk-tuk, and rickshaw for shorter distances. We stayed in guesthouses, homestays, and even in the jungle during a trek. While the Angkor temples are fabulous, it’s the people you should visit Cambodia for—the "Land of Smiles" truly lives up to its nickname! Tourists gather in Angkor but are quite rare elsewhere, even though the country is easy to travel around. I won’t describe our trip in detail but instead highlight a few favorite moments. From Kampot, don’t hesitate to head out around 6 AM to see the fishermen return and their wives selling their catch (just 10 minutes away by the coast). Guaranteed picturesque! In Battambang, known for its food scene, we discovered a cooking class with Smokin’ Pot (authentic Khmer cooking class). They pick you up from your guesthouse to shop for ingredients (we made fish amok and beef lok lak) at their village market, then cook and eat together. A private class—just the two of us! They also send the recipes via WhatsApp as a PDF. +855 12 821 400 In Siem Reap, I can recommend a francophone tuk-tuk driver who was very attentive to our wishes. We visited tourist spots but also more remote villages and local grilled-pork restaurants with him. We did a 2-day, 1-night trek in Mondulkiri. Don’t expect a super dense jungle—it looks more like a forest similar to ours. But Nara, our Bunong ethnic guide, made the experience adventurous and ultimately very immersive! In Kratie, rent a scooter and follow the Mekong north for 40 km at your own pace. Being so close to the locals was a treat! Same goes for heading south if you have time. Kampong Thom: Head 25 km out to visit the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk. Around a hundred monuments spread across three sites… and hardly anyone there!

A few practical tips: Though prices are often listed in dollars, you can always pay in riels (1 USD = 4000 riels), which is what we preferred. PassApp: An app to book tuk-tuks or rickshaws (and most importantly, know the price upfront). Virak Buntham: A bus company connecting several cities, bookable online.
