Antananarivo-Tuléar Route

Hello,

I’m an agronomy student specializing in tropical regions, and I need to do my 4-month internship near Tuléar. However, I only found out about it yesterday, and I’m supposed to leave on September 16th. I’ve never done this kind of trip before—neither alone nor with someone else. So, I’m a little lost and, um… panicking! I also need to transport valuable equipment that doesn’t take up too much space!

I’m not sure how to get between the two cities, Antananarivo and Tuléar. I plan to carry my luggage in an 80L hiking backpack to avoid drawing attention in Antananarivo.

Has anyone taken a *taxi-brousse* on this route before? How much time should I allow between the two cities, and what budget should I plan for this trip? Where can I find *taxis-brousses* (TB) in Antananarivo?

Any info will be helpful and reassuring! Thanks!

PS: What do you think about safety in Tuléar?

Hi there, There’s roughly 1,000 km between Tana and Tuléar. Bush taxis average about 50 km/h, so that’s around twenty hours of driving. Since it’s best to avoid traveling at night, I’d recommend breaking it into two legs and stopping for a night in Fianarantsoa. To find the bush taxi station, just tell the taxi driver where you’re going. For the taxi itself, it’s better to ask your hotel to arrange one. For valuables, keep them hidden on you if they’re not too bulky. As for the bush taxi budget, I don’t remember exactly, but I’d say between 20 € and 30 €. Safety is a sensitive and recurring question—these are the usual recommendations for traveling in this kind of country: avoid outward signs of wealth, don’t walk around at night in big cities, travel with someone if you’re unsure, don’t provoke, and always stay relaxed and smiley. Happy preparations, and feel free to ask if you need more info!

Hi,

The bush taxi ride costs 80,000 ariary, which is about 28-29 €. The journey takes 18 to 20 hours, depending on whether the bush taxi breaks down or stops too often for bathroom breaks. I’ve taken it twice directly, so you travel at night since departure is around 5 PM from Tana. I’ve never had any issues, but nighttime bush taxi robberies are increasing. Otherwise, you can do it in two legs, as mentioned earlier. If you’re staying at a hotel in Tana, don’t hesitate to ask the hotel staff or other guests for advice.

Hi,

The best solution, as mentioned earlier, is to break the trip into two stages with an overnight stay in Fianarantsoa. The most stressful part is definitely the parking (bus station) in Antananarivo. It’s crowded, and there are lots of middlemen who’ll try to steer you toward a transport company... I think the best approach is to book the day before, taking the first departure the next day around 7 or 8 AM. If you can arrange for a hotel-chosen taxi driver to accompany you for this first leg, things will go much smoother after that. Once you arrive in Fianarantsoa, you can book your next leg for the following day.

No need to panic—have a great trip!

The previous comments are relevant. For a beginner, the most challenging part will indeed be the bus station in Tana. It's best to do some research beforehand to identify a reliable company and head straight to their office (even if it means telling touts you already have your ticket).

Regarding luggage, as mentioned earlier, keep all valuables (camera, laptop, etc.) with you in the vehicle.

If all this seems daunting, flying is still an option, but it's much more expensive. For a non-resident, a one-way ticket should be around 200 €.

Hi Pierre,

Do you know a reliable *brousse* (and a phone number if possible) for the Fianarantsoa route?

I usually take Cotisse for Majunga or Tamatave, but they don’t do this route.

I’d also like to know a reliable *brousse* for Fianarantsoa–Tuléar.

Thanks in advance!

Tana - Fianarantsoa: Coopérative MAMI: +261 32 07 700 98 or +261 34 06 151 22 Fianarantsoa - Tuléar: KOFIFI +261 34 95 080 58

Cooperatives Mami and Kofifi are not reliable at all—fatal accidents happen way too often. Latest example: my cousin nearly lost her life on a MAMI bus on the Tana-Toamasina route. The bus in question, which looked about 40 years old from the chassis, had its brakes fail on a steep descent and took a nosedive into the ravine near Mandraka. Since then, my family only trusts Cotisse. At least for the Tana-Majunga and Tana-Tamatave routes.

I don’t know where you saw that price—in May 2016, it was 40,000 ariary direct and 50,000 ariary with a stop in Fianar, and I don’t think prices have dropped since 2013

Hi, Personally, I never had any issues with these two cooperatives. I made the Tana–Fianarantsoa trip at least twice a month for nearly five years (round trip). After that, everyone makes their own choice.

back in March, they told me they were planning to open a Tana/Fianar route in June—anyone have updates on this?

Cotisse still doesn’t operate the Tana-Fianar route, and honestly, I don’t think it’s gonna happen.

Oh, why's that?

Cotisse still doesn’t operate the Tana-Fianara route, and frankly, I don’t think it’s gonna happen

That’s an opinion I don’t share. Cotisse is a company that’s growing smartly and will likely expand.

Hi,

No, Cotisse won’t be expanding, according to Alain, its president. Originally, the company didn’t plan to offer transportation since its main business was selling Mercedes minibuses—not operating transport services. But since there was a large stock of unsold used Mercedes Sprinter minibuses (the most expensive on the second-hand market), Alain, Cotisse’s boss, decided to repurpose them for public transport by creating Cotisse. However, the Sonatra cooperative, according to its president Ragaby, is planning to open a similar route to Cotisse’s on the Tana-Fianarantsoa axis.

that’d be great right now, punctuality isn’t really a thing on this route😉 fingers crossed that Cotisse sets a good example

Hello! For a bush taxi from Antananarivo to Tuléar, budget around 200,000 Ariary all-in (meals + transport), which is about 40 €. Otherwise, a private taxi will cost you between 500,000 and 750,000 Ariary, or you can take a flight for around 270 €.

Thanks, but I don’t know why this message was sent to me! Plus, it’s on a 2017 post... Probably a mistake.
