Hi! We're spending 4 days in Krabi in April—lots of walks, hikes, and sites to explore, all about 30 km away. I'm wondering, since I'm not a big fan of minibuses (some of us get motion sickness easily), is it feasible to rent a car to explore the Krabi area? Or is that a bad idea? We're a family with two kids aged 15 and 12 planning to visit Malaysia and Borneo. We'd like to travel from 23/07/2025 to 20/08/2025, which is almost 4 full weeks on the ground. We've made good progress but would love some advice. We're planning a flight from Paris to Singapore.

Hi there, I need your thoughts on the rest of my itinerary. We’re spending two nights in Phnom Penh and five in Siem Reap. That leaves us with six days, and we’d like to do Kampot-Kep and Koh Rong Sanloem. Originally, I wanted to go to Battambang, but I’m worried it might be too much. We’re in Indonesia right now, currently in Bali, and we’re heading to Sulawesi for a month. We’ll land in Makassar and are thinking of taking a domestic flight to Manado so we can ideally rent a car there and then drive back down to Makassar on our own. We plan to spend about two weeks in North Sulawesi and the remaining two weeks in West/South Sulawesi.

Do you think it’s doable to travel independently like this, or is it better to stick with buses/taxis?

Any good tips for renting a vehicle? Where to pick up and drop off, road conditions, etc.?

Here’s my itinerary: June 3: KL to Malacca Days 2, 3, 4: Malacca Evening of Day 4: Malacca to Penang Days 5, 6, 7: Penang Day 8: Flight from Penang to Kota Bharu (I found direct morning flights) Transfer from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut, then to Perhentian Islands Days 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14: Perhentian Islands (still deciding which one) Day 14: Perhentian Islands to Kota Bharu, then flight to KL Days 14, 15, 16: KL Day 17: Return

What do you think of this plan? Is the Malacca to Penang bus trip late at night?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a little trip to Indonesia for my 40th birthday. My tickets are already booked, and I arrive in Bali on the evening of March 26. I saw that Nyepi is on the 29th, so I decided to leave Bali and come back later.

I’ve made arrangements to go to Nusa Penida, but they observe Nyepi there too! So I’m thinking of leaving Nusa Penida on the evening of March 28 and would like to visit southern Lombok (especially Gili Gede and Ekas). My issue is that I can only find fast boats to Bangsal (the north of the island). Do you know if there are any transport options to southern Lombok (like Kuta Lombok)? In this southern region, do you have any great tips? I’m looking for places to go, but also drivers to take us around and hotels.

Hi everyone, we’re a couple in our thirties and we’ve decided to visit northwest Vietnam with AmicaTravel for their "meet-up in Lolo Land" circuit. I’m currently looking at the itinerary with the Lonely Planet and reading the many posts on this site, especially Lansay’s, which are really inspiring. Here are the stages of the circuit: Day 1: Hanoi – arrival Day 2: Hanoi visit Day 3: Hanoi – Thac Ba Day 4: Thac Ba – Luc Yen – Ha Giang Day 5: Ha Giang – Dong Van Day 6: Dong Van – Meo Vac – Bao Lac Day 7: Bao Lac – Ba Be Lake Day 8: Ba Be visit Day 9: Ba Be – Cao Bang Day 10: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Cao Bang Day 11: Cao Bang – Lang Son Day 12: Lang Son – Halong Bay Day 13: Halong Bay – Hanoi Day 14: Hanoi – departure Otherwise, the period would be from April 21, 2012, to May 5, 2012, but this could vary by a day or two if it’s worth it. I haven’t made the reservation yet because I’m trying to find out if all the stages of the circuit are interesting (thanks to this forum). We’d like to stay with locals as much as possible and maybe spend an extra day in one region to avoid just "passing through"—settle in a bit. We’d also like to do some trekking, and I read in Lansay’s posts that Bac Ha would be a good option for that (this stage isn’t included in the initial circuit), unless other stages of the circuit are just as good for trekking.

Finally, regarding the last stage in Halong Bay, what’s the best way to explore it? It seems very crowded (and I don’t know if the junk boat included in the circuit is designed for a small group or very large groups, which we’d prefer to avoid if possible). I read a post here that I can’t find anymore about a couple who did a stage with a small stay on an island or something like that—it sounded paradise-like.

Generally, we’d like to avoid running into too many tourists (yes, I know it’s a bit paradoxical), but it’s mainly to encourage encounters with locals and maybe with a small group of travelers. If others want to do this circuit, why not... but we’re hoping to travel in a very small group (maximum 6 people).

Otherwise, for the flight, I was thinking of booking with Vietnam Airlines—is that a good choice? Thanks in advance for your great tips.

Hi there. I wanted to check and asked Krungsri Bank if they offered a cash advance at the counter to avoid Thai ATM withdrawal fees. They told me yes, but only up to 200 baht. No, I didn’t forget a zero—it’s not even 6 €... That doesn’t get you very far.

Can anyone confirm this info, or are there banks that offer a larger cash advance? Krungsri is the only bank that does currency exchange in the town where I’m currently staying in Thailand.

Hi, right now, 28 km from Yasothon, there's a grand festival after the rice harvest. Puffed rice grains are strung on threads, forming curtain-like structures about 10 meters high—it's really impressive! So beautiful and unique. The crowd is huge, and there's not a single foreigner except for us. A must-see. Absolutely.

Hi there! We’ll be in Singapore for a few days and have 9 days off from there. We’d love to visit Borneo, obviously not everything since we only have 9 days. Ideally, we’d like to spend the last 2 days near the sea in Sabah. Of course, we know we’ll only be able to see a small part of Borneo, but the logistics seem a bit tricky in such a short time.

Hi, I’d been told it was between 2,000 and 2,500 THB per day. 3,000 THB for Doi Inthanon... The driver I found gave me different prices depending on my destinations: 5,000 THB for the waterfalls in Doi Inthanon National Park, which I negotiated down to 4,000. Then 2,000 for Lamphun, 3,000 for another day, and two times 3,500 for two other itineraries I showed him. In total, 16,000 THB, which I negotiated down to 14,000. I’m wondering if I overpaid... Since I’m planning two more outings, I’d like to have a solid baseline for negotiating...

We’re in our sixties, not exactly high-level athletes, but we do travel quite a bit. We don’t like changing hotels every day—we prefer to stay in one central spot and explore the area around it. If we need to move to make the most of it, I think twice max would be fine.

I’m going to contact a French-speaking guide (I read about it on the forum) to get an idea of pricing and options, but I’d really love to hear from people who’ve already stayed there during this period and get some tips on finding accommodations.

Hi there, what’s good to do around BKK for 2 days outside of Bangkok? We’re wrapping up our Laos-Cambodia-Thailand trip. We don’t want to stay in BKK anymore (we’ve been there many times over the past 35 years), and someone mentioned Kanchanaburi. Is it worth it? Any other suggestions, keeping in mind we’re not looking for beaches (we already know Thailand’s beaches well). All recommendations are welcome—we’re on a tight schedule as we head back to Thailand on February 3rd and have 2 days to spend outside Bangkok from the 7th to the 9th of February.
