Hi there,

My partner and I are heading to Malaysia in early July. We arrive in KL on 03/07 in the late afternoon and leave from KL on 18/07 in the evening.

We’ve planned: Day 1: KL Day 2: Cameron Highlands day trip from KL Day 3: KL → Taman Negara (bus) Day 4 & 5: Trek in Taman Negara Day 6: Taman Negara → Perhentians (bus + boat) Day 7 & 8: Perhentians Day 9: Perhentians → Pulau Redang (boat + bus + boat) Day 10 & 11: Pulau Redang Day 12: Pulau Redang → George Town (flight) Day 13: George Town Day 14: George Town → KL (flight) Day 15: KL + return flight at 23:45

I feel like this might not be the most efficient route. Any tips on how to optimize the order of things (even though I’d prefer to start with Taman Negara)? How’s the best way to travel between places?

Should we book everything (transport, accommodation, activities) in advance, or can we figure it out day by day? I prefer spontaneous travel to keep things flexible, but will there be availability, or will we be struggling constantly?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!

I feel like this isn’t the most optimal route.

My trip to Malaysia wasn’t exactly yesterday, so I can only speak to the places you’re planning to visit—not travel times, though... In my opinion, your route is totally doable at a relaxed pace... From KL, I’d head to Batu Caves, even if it’s probably pretty crowded these days. The day after you arrive or on your way back from your trip? I’d probably skip the Cameron Highlands—the tea fields aren’t that appealing to me, but it’s a matter of taste. I’d go straight to Taman Negara instead.

I don’t know Pulau Redang. I think pairing it with the Perhentians is a good idea. I really liked Pulau Besar and Kecil; Kecil is more of a party island these days, but when I went, there was no electricity, so no "party" at all. I didn’t like Georgetown either (I just stopped there on my way to Sumatra), but one day there should be fine.

I prefer traveling day by day so I can change plans more easily. But will there be availability, or will we be struggling non-stop?

I’ve always traveled this way, even now, but based on what I read on VF, I might be the only one? The only time I strayed from this approach (out of necessity, for wildlife parks), I felt like I was on rails! Nowadays, booking everything end-to-end—transport, accommodations, "activities," etc.—seems to be the norm; you’d think it’s mandatory! PS: I’d love to hear your thoughts on Pulau Redang—a short stay on those islands sounds tempting (especially if paired with the Perhentians...)

No, there are two of us. Or three now, thanks to Nicolas.

Now, end-to-end booking—transport, accommodations, "activities," etc.—is the norm; it feels like it’s mandatory!

I feel the same way. All these unscrupulous booking sites that rush to spout nonsense like "only 2 spots left for your dates" to pressure gullible, anxious travelers into whipping out their credit cards ASAP—even if it means losing their freedom of movement during the trip—must play a big part in this. And maybe freedom scares people these days...

Back in the day, when people asked for help planning itineraries on forums, it was to get feedback on coherence, feasibility based on existing transport, suggest fun alternatives—basically, to share tips for improving the trip. But now, I’ve noticed that most people asking questions are mainly doing it to organize their bookings first. "Organize" like in "package tour," which no longer seems to be a "dirty word," even for independent travelers...

I’ve never been to Malaysia, but if I were to go, I’d do it without on-the-spot bookings, just like I’ve always done elsewhere—with very, very few exceptions. Because if Plan A falls through, I’ve always been able to quickly find reasonable Plan B options.

I’ve never been to Malaysia, but if I were to go, I’d head there without any bookings, just like I’ve always done elsewhere—with very, very few exceptions. If Plan A falls through, I’ve always been able to find a reasonable Plan B pretty quickly.

That said, ever since Booking and other reservation platforms came along, I use them to check out what’s on offer. I’ll jot down 2 or 3 places to stay (along with their listed prices) in spots where I might stop. Once I’m there, if I decide to spend the night in a place where one of those accommodations is available, I’ll visit first, and if it works for me, I’ll negotiate the rate—since those platforms sometimes take over 20%! In over 50 years of traveling, I’ve only run into a problem once, and that was with my family (including two kids) during an overnight layover in Madrid on our way to Caracas. It was February, and there must’ve been some kind of fair going on because every single place (pousadas, casas de huéspedes, hotels—everything) was fully booked. We had to search for two hours!

Hi! CH is already a 3.5-hour one-way drive from KL. Maybe a bit much for a day trip. Did you consider Genting Highlands by any chance?

Hello,

My partner and I are heading to Malaysia in early July. We arrive in KL on 03/07 in the late afternoon and leave KL on 18/07 in the evening.

We planned: Day 1: KL Day 2: Cameron Highlands as a day trip from KL Day 3: KL -> Taman Negara (bus) Day 4 & 5: Trek in Taman Negara Day 6: TN -> Perhentians (bus + boat) Day 7 & 8: Perhentians Day 9: Perhentians -> Pulau Redang (boat + bus + boat) Day 10 & 11: Pulau Redang Day 12: Pulau Redang -> George Town (flight) Day 13: George Town Day 14: GT -> KL (flight) Day 15: KL + return flight at 23:45

It feels like this isn’t the most efficient route. Any advice on this? Maybe reordering things (even though I’d prefer to start with TN) to optimize travel. How to move most efficiently between places...

Should we book everything (transport, accommodation, activities) in advance, or can we figure it out day by day? I prefer spontaneous travel to adjust plans easily, but will there be availability, or will we be struggling constantly?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Well, I guess it depends on the timing. The issue right now is that in July it seems to be *very* touristy... That’s why I’d love to hear from anyone who’s already been to Malaysia in July to find out if it’s possible to do everything last-minute or not.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it seems more like an amusement park than tea plantations to me. Am I wrong? We’re specifically looking for plantation landscapes in Malaysia.

Don’t you have kids? Are you young?... At a push, I’d book on arrival in KL and the first night on one or two islands. Once you’re there, if it suits you, you can either extend your stay if it’s available or move somewhere else... Ideally, someone who’s been recently could give you a good address within your budget range...

Well, we skipped Pulau Redang since we couldn’t find any hotels on Booking. Generally, apart from the Perhentians and Taman Negara, you can find stuff last-minute.

For transport, it also works well to check last-minute deals.

So even in July, it’s possible to travel freely—except maybe in the Perhentians since it’s super touristy and packed.
