Hello, We’re about to book the Saharan Loops 4x4 tour with Fram for April. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this trip. Thanks in advance! Best regards, Michel

hi there, You won’t find many (or any) reviews on "all-inclusive" tours here on VoyageForum.

In my opinion, this kind of trip is a total rip-off. You’ll spend your time in a car (in a 4x4, which, by the way, is completely unnecessary for this route—everything’s paved), with stops at the drivers’ cousins’ places (paid peanuts) selling rugs and argan oil, plus visits to fake cooperatives. Basically, you’ll be feeding a well-oiled tourist-trap machine from start to finish. Fram has to pay its shareholders first...

Morocco deserves better than that.

Best, Murielle

Hi

You can do this entire tour on paved roads with just a regular car. They add a couple of short off-road sections to justify the 4x4.

You’ll visit a lot of shops where the driver and guide get their commission. It’s an easy, very classic route.

Plus, it’ll cost you way less! !

Good evening. I agree with Elhine. At best, it’ll be uninteresting, at worst, a real scam. Try checking out Point Afrique or another agency to see if there are similar "circuits" in Algeria. The Hoggar or Djanet region, Tassili n'Ajjer... And there, it’s absolutely stunning! Anyway, the Sahara is mostly in Algeria, and with an agency, it should be possible, whereas these days, it’s practically impossible without one.

Why not rent your own car? It's really easy to travel around Morocco. All the road signs are in French. Almost everywhere you'll meet people who speak French. Outside the big cities, traffic is very calm. And if you're worried about driving in Marrakech, the rental company will drive you out of the city. You’ll still give them enough for the bus fare back...

On my first trip to Morocco, I hesitated about renting a car. Then we decided to go for it, and we really didn’t regret it—it was a great experience. We only have amazing memories of it. In fact, we repeated the experience pretty quickly. Buses are more restrictive. And organized tours aren’t my thing.

Apparently, that's not what they want to do... They want to go into the "desert"—they're talking about a Saharan loop in a 4x4, which means off paved roads and with few (or no) road signs... With or without a 4x4, there’s a risk of getting stuck in the sand (depending on where you drive), but that’s not all... So, you might hesitate to hit the road in your own vehicle (even if it’s rented!) without a guide or driver.🙁

The entire so-called "Saharan loop" offered in this circuit is on tarmac (with 3 small orange sand dunes—shhh! You’ve got to say there’s hardly any sandy desert in Morocco!). So no problem with a regular car. They’ll probably go scrambling a bit in those dunes on a track 50 meters from a nice paved road, just to justify the 4x4... Not even enough to get stuck like in your photo :-)

Big tour operators know how to sell a dream: photos with camels, dunes, Blue Men, and 4x4s, a pool in some corner of the flyer, and voilà... the trick is done. They definitely don’t mention that Morocco is mostly mountains, not dunes.

Does this mean that FRAM (I don’t know them) only has one circuit to offer and it’s always the same one?!🙁 Because in their message, they don’t specify anything.

I just took a look... and sure enough, that’s exactly it. I think the price is a bit high for this type of circuit. If I were interested in this kind of "activity," I’d go for an all-inclusive stay in the Algerian Sahara instead. In Djanet, for example.

Anyway, for a first post, our forum member 😏 won’t be disappointed—his trip is all kitted out for winter! Fram is a generalist that offers trips for generalists... The first question is: How much do they charge? If budget isn’t the main concern, there are plenty of agencies (not everyone can organize a trip alone) that can offer more tailored tours. Off the top of my head: Evanéos, Terre d’av...

Absolutely! I was actually comparing Fram’s proposal with "Point Afrique Voyage" in the Algerian Sahara. The latter seems more interesting to me, but I’m not entirely sure... Well, I just took a look, and it’s not exactly selling the dream... But they’re upfront about it: 90 km of off-road tracks in 8 days!!! For 1000 € pp in April, I’m sure we can find something more fun... And it’s not even a private tour at that price!!!

I used Point Afrique’s services once, a long time ago, for a trip to the Mauritanian desert. For the price and the values of Point-Afrique, it wasn’t bad. Back then (2006), it was an association. It’s since become an agency, but I think they’ve kept their original values. No flyers are left lying around in barbershops or doctors’ waiting rooms to showcase Algeria’s beauty or the kindness of Algerians. On the other hand, Morocco—its men in their work blues, the 4x4s...

Around 2000 € for 2 spots on Fram’s circuit. With that amount, you can have a great trip in Morocco for more than a week for two people. Maybe by using a local agency if you don’t want to handle all the trip planning yourself.
