Tiens toi à un projet, tu modifies ou pas selon les réponses et avec l'historique et tes envies, ça se construit au fur et à mesure !
Effectivement nouveau post, parce que dans le dernier, la moitié des gens ont passé leur temps à répondre sur la manière dont ils roulent aux USA et à traiter les autres de danger public. Impossible d'avoir un fil conducteur pour le reste des contributeurs.
Je profite donc de ce dernier post pour recadrer mon voyage et les demandes de renseignements qui y sont associées.
Chaque commentaire est fait en fonction de sa pratique et de ses goûts...
Donc, voici le mien, je trouve ton programme très chargé pour 19 jours sur place. J'éliminerai SF, pour prendre mon temps sur le reste du circuit...
Question température, en juillet nous avons eu frisquet, la nuit, à Yellowstone mais pas besoin de polaire. Pour avoir bcp regarder la webcam du Old Fiathful, j'ai mémoire que c'était idem en juin. Par contre en mai il y avait de la neige.

J4 : A ce compte là, prévois de dormir entre Bryce et Page (tu auras pu voir le coucher de soleil sur Bryce NP en J3)
J5 : le meilleur moment pour apprécier Antelope Canyon est juste avant midi et la visite est très courte si tu ne fais que le Upper en mode "touriste de base" 😛 compte 1h30 grand maximum. Mais bon, il y a d'autres choses à voir à Page... Lac Powel, Horseshoe Bend..., Chacun son choix. Donc, si tu ne fais qu'Antelope, tu peux ensuite filer sur Grand Canyon et arriver en fin de journée pour le coucher de soleil. Ca fait tout de même très marathon tout ça. 🤪

Monument Valley, si tu ne lui consacres que peu de temps, consacres lui, tout au moins, le coucher de soleil. En juin, il est assez tard. Donc autant dormir à MV ou aux alentours, tu peux éventuellement "pousser" jusqu'à Mexican Hat pour dormir.

Rajoute au moins Dead Horse Point State Park en plus de Arches lors de ton passage express à Moab.

Si tu ne souhaites pas visiter Salt Lake City, tu peux dormir un peu plus au Nord, Ogden par exemple, je ne parle pas côté "animation" mais juste côté "point de chute".
Pour la suite du parcours, tu peux passer par Bear Lake (US89) au lieu de monter par la I15. Ca roulera moins vite, mais les paysages sont très jolis. 🙂

Polaire, oui, coupe vent aussi. Le 8 septembre, nous avons eu un petit -4 °C vers 23h... Les journées, par temps ensoleillée, sont agréables. Certains ont aussi eu droit à de la neige en juin, me semble-t-il...

Bon, je t'ai donné des pistes pour "gagner du temps"... Mais ceci, dit, je serai de l'avis de Madikera : ne pas faire San Francisco ce coup-ci. Cela te permettrai d'être plus "cool", de mieux profiter des zones traversées et visitées. Là ton périple, ressemble parfois à un "autotour vendu par une agence de voyage" - tout voir sans rien voir. Mais chacun sa façon de voyager. 😄
Essaye quand même de passer par Valley of Fire. Pour Zion, vu le peu de temps, inutile de t'y arrêter mais fais la petite balade de Canyon Overlook, juste après la sortie du tunnel. Un peu avant d'arriver à Bryce, tu traverses Red Canyon qui, à cette heure, est flamboyant. Coucher de soleil à Sunset Point.😉

En J3LV - ZION - BRYCE, tu as plusieurs possibilités:
- Après avoir quitté LV (tôt), tu t'arrêtes à Valley of Fire (à 50 Mi de LV) (à faire tôt car il y fait chaud!!), puis tu t'arrêtes à Zion sans rentrer ds le parc (uniquement pour faire la balade Canyon Overlook, juste après la sortie du tunnel), et tu arrives à Bryce pour faire le coucher de soleil
- Après avoir quitté LV , tu ne t'arrêtes pas à Valley of Fire, tu files sur Zion pour y prendre au Visitor Center, une navette obligatoire qui te mènera par exemple jusqu'au terminus de la scenic drive et tu fais la balade des Narrows les pieds ds l'eau de la Virgin Rivière (très très agréable en été)
Puis tu reprends ta voiture et tu peux à nouveau t'arrêter juste après la sortie du tunnel, pour faire la balade Canyon Overlook (comme tu le dis: les journées sont longues en juin)
Puis route jusque Bryce où forcément tu arriveras tard (après le coucher de soleil) mais ce n'est pas grave puisque tu as tte la journée du lendemain ds ce parc, pour faire les lever et coucher de soleil.
- Maintenant si tu veux grouper J5 et J6 et dormir entre Bryce et Page en J4, il te faut alors arriver tôt à Bryce en J3 pour y voir le magnifique coucher de soleil (qu'il ne faut pas rater!!). Ds ce cas-là, tu ne pourras alors pas trop t'attarder à Zion (peut-être te contenter de la balade Canyon Overlook qui est déjà pas mal!)
Alors, en J5, : tu pars d'où tu as dormi entre Bryce et Page, suffisamment tôt pour arriver à Antelope Canyon vers 10H30-11H, si tu veux faire la partie Upper avec les rayons de soleil entrant ds la fente (visite jusque +/-12H30).
Puis tu fais Hoseshoe Bend (à ne surtout pas manquer!!) (compte 1H de visite)
Puis tu fais la route jusqu'au Grand Canyon (avec arrêts éventuellement à Marble Canyon et Lee's Ferry, et plus loin le Little Colorado) et tu fais le coucher de soleil sur le Grand Canyon au niveau de la Desert View Drive.
Puis tu continues jusque Grand Canyon Village ou Tusayan pour dormir.
Ce sera une trèèèèèèèèès longue journée....
Et puis tu continues: J7 qui est devenu J6 : Gd canyon (Divers points de vue + quelques Kms dans un des trails), vol d'hélico??
J8 qui est devenu J7 :Gd canyon - MV.
Là il faut absolument rester à MV pour y assister au coucher de soleil... Tu ne peux donc pas te mettre en route pour Moab ce jour-là!
Mais comme cela, tu profiteras plus longtemps du Grand Canyon , et tu pourras, tout à ton aise, en te rendant à MV, refaire les points de vue le long de la Desert View Drive, que tu auras zappés en J5 par manque de temps.

Il y a comme tu le dis, deux manières de voir les choses. soit on explore à fond une région et on apprécie les détails, soit on se contente d'une vue plus générale mais plus étendue.
Vu le budget conséquent de ce type de voyage et mes 50 balais, je ne pense pas pouvoir effectuer de multiples périples aux USA, sauf héritage imprévu. Je privilégie donc pour ce qui sera peut-être mon unique voyage aux USA le "max" à voir.
toutefois, le retour vers SF est peut-être bien too much.
Si je peux récupérer ces 3 jours, que me conseillerais-tu comme site supplémentaire qui me permettrait de me poser un peu plus ?

Garder ton circuit de base et tenir compte des remarques de Derennes et Bastinj pour les "petits plus". En passant par Salt Lake City tu peux aussi faire un crochet par Antelope Island.
Je dirai 1 jour entier consacré à Zion NP, au moins 1 jour de plus sur Moab, au moins 1 jour de plus sur Page. N'oublie pas la fatigue qui finira bien par arriver à un moment ou l'autre de ton périple. Pouvoir dire stop et se poser de temps en temps, c'est bien aussi. 🙂
Ce voyage que tu (vous) allez effectué est d'abord est avant tout le tien. Donc, je te conseille de bien définir tes 3 ou 4 musts, ceux que tu désires vraiment voir. A partir de ces 3 ou 4 impératifs, tu verras ce que tu peux faire, par exemple éliminer des moins impératifs, pour toi.
Certains te diront, "il faut absolument aller là" et d'autres "ah non inutile" (comme pour Antelope qq'un te la conseillé et moi je te le déconseille !!!). Il est des sites que nous avons choisi d'aller voir et en avons été très heureux alors qu'on nous déconseillait... et inverse. C'est justement l'intérêt de bâtir son propre voyage: éviter de prendre du tout fait, même si cela semble du super bien fait.
Pour t'aider, il y a tous les carnets du site. Ils regorgent d'infos diverses et de photos, parfois sublimes. Chacun d'entre eux raconte un voyage et c'est parfois assez drôle de constater les différences/divergences au même endroit !

concernant l'hébergement, je ne peux rien te conseiller car, comme tu as du le lire dans mon carnet, nous dormions dans la voiture. Par contre, de nombreuses personnes semblent avoir dormi à Mexican Hat (qui est très petit). Le trajet entre les 2 endroits est rapide et se fait aisément après le coucher de soleil.
Pour Monument Valley, soit tu t'offres une nuit au The View à ~ 220$/nuit TTC (que perso, je trouve un peu cher, même pour la vue proposée 😉...) ou alors du côté de Mexican Hat (on a été au Hat Rock Inn, pour 88$ TTC/nuit, rien à redire... chambre très correcte... on a dîné au « Swinging Steak » du Mexican Hat Lodge et peti déj (à 7h du mat seulement) au San Juan Cafe)... Mexican Hat n'est effectivement pas une ville (village) où on s'attarde beaucoup, mais pour y dormir RAS...

L'hotel view a l'air d'avoir une situation extra mais son prix l'est tout autant.
Idem au niveau des divers parcs, loger à l'intérieur est ceratinement le plus pratique mais pas le plus économique.
Je vais faire chauffer la calculatrice...
qq idées de logements dans des prix "moyens/moyens +" (c'est subjectif, hein ! tout le monde n'a pas la même fourchette de prix) au plus près des sites :
- Las Vegas : Flamingo (ou pour une vue que j'aime bien : le Bellagio avec une Lakeview Room)
- Bryce : Ruby's inn (proche, un peu usine à touriste, mais RAS pour y dormir par ex dans les bâtiments Elk View Lodge ou Lake View Lodge qui se trouvent à l'écart de la route et près d'un petit lac... rien à dire de spécial, la chambre était bien et c'était calme... nous n'avons pas dîner ni petit déjeuner sur place ... mais on s'est offert les repas au Bryce Canyon Lodge (diner un peu "cher", petit déj pas trop, mais franchement on y a super bien mangé !)... le Ruby's Inn est vraiment à l'entrée de Bryce Canyon (moins de 10 min pour aller à Sunrise ou Sunset Point) ... certains n'aiment pas cet endroit... nous, on y a séjourné 2 fois (juste pour dormir, c'est vrai qu'il ne faut pas y manger si possible) et RAS...
- Page : le Days inn est très bien (avec petit déj inclus)
- Grand Canyon : le Mather Lodge est bien, pas au bord du Canyon mais à peine à 5min de marche... on nous avait dit le pire sur le self et on l'a trouvé très bien (dîner et petit déj)... il y a des chambres à 90$...
- Monument Valley : déjà évoqué
- Moab : le Inca inn est peu cher (je ne connais pas cependant... on a été aux 2 Best Western, bien, rien à redire (le Best Western Greenwell Inn a un petit déj inclus) mais pas forcément donné (sauf si comme nous tu as une carte de la chaine et que tu as des nuits gratuites)... on a également été au River Canyon Lodge (pas extraordinaire... ni excellent ni terrible...)
- Jackson : Quality Inn 49
- Yellowstone : Old Faithful Snow Lodge (pas donné mais bien... tout près du Old Faithfull à pied)

Oui, on peut voir l'essentiel de Yellowstone en 2 jours, en 3, 4 5 ou plus, on trouve toujours autre chose à voir, mais le tour minimum, c'est 2 jours
Vêtements en juin : j'y étais début juin cette année : le matin de notre départ, il a neigé et il faisait -3°. jours avant, j'ai vu des gens visiter en maillot de bain.

Je me rends compte que Yellowstone peut présenter même en deuxième quinzaine de juin des conditions hivernales, mais comment cela se passe-t-il la bas lorsqu'il y a de la neige au niveau des routes ? Est -ce rapidement dégagé ? Faut-il s'attendre à du verglas ?
Je suppose qu'ils sont mieux armés qu'en Belgique mais je préfère m'en assurer.
Au niveau de la visite du parc lui-même, as-tu une proposition de parcours (sud-ouest -nord-est) ou plutot (sud-est-nord-ouest) ? Faut-il s'arrêter à Mamoth et puis revenir sur ses pas ou effectuer une boucle complète ?
Début juin, à 7h le matin, nous avons croisé les engins de déneigement qui partait dégager un col, je suppose,
car la neige tenait pas sur la route entre Canyon Lodge et Norris, puis très peu entre Norris et west Yellowstone et après vers Idaho falls
Je crois qu'il ne faut pas trop s'en inquiéter pour rouler fin juin et ça ne doit pas être fréquent.
Si tu regardes la carte du parc, tu voies un 8 et des entrées est, sud, ouest, nord et nord est.
Le circuit en 2 jours se fait sur le 8, avec des boucles complètes
un jour pour le cercle du bas, avec Old Faithfull, le lac et les bords de la rivière yellowstone et les chutes
l'autre jour pour le nord, avec Norris, Mamoth et la partie nord est.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

There are several attractions along the way:

- Joshua Tree National Park

- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
