Is Gunsan worth a detour?

Hi there,

I’ve heard about the city of Gunsan (on the Yellow Sea coast) and I’m not sure if it’s worth the trip. I’d be using public transport, and it seems like a bit of a trek from Seoul.

Hi,

When I visited the West Coast, Gunsan didn’t catch my eye. Maybe I was wrong, but you’ve got to make choices. I stopped earlier at Daecheon Beach from Incheon Airport and then headed to Jeonju.

Is this your first trip to South Korea? Gunsan is worth a look, but maybe save it for later. The city is interesting because it’s kept some architectural traces of the Japanese occupation. It’s like a little piece of Japan in Korea. The surrounding islands are also great for some beautiful viewpoints.

Hi there,

Yes, this would be my first trip to South Korea, but I’d be staying for several weeks.

For Gunsan, I read an article in *Korea Mag* where they explain how to get there and highlight a few tourist spots (a museum, a temple, some murals...) with some photos. They present the city as being off the beaten path, and honestly, it didn’t seem like a "must-see" to me either. But after your insights, if I have time, it might be worth checking out.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you plan to visit? Korea is my second home.

For now, I don’t have a precise itinerary. The trip will be next summer (two months). At the moment, I’m reading some blogs, guides, and magazines about South Korea to see if there’s enough to do for that long, and I’m also looking at what I can visit without a car since I don’t drive. On that last point, I’m reassured—I’ve seen that there’s a good train and bus network.

Now that I know you’re familiar with South Korea, I won’t hesitate to ask you again for more specific questions!

I’m just a little worried about the language because I’ve read that few Koreans speak English. I hope it’ll be okay….

Yeah, they don’t speak much English there. You can download Papago for translations—it works really well. But heads up, it’s best for English-Korean / Korean-English... French is still a bit hit-or-miss.

I’ve never had the slightest problem. When you’re outside the "classic tourist areas," even hotel staff sometimes don’t speak English. In those cases, a translator comes in handy (restaurants too). But there’s nothing to worry about. My first trip to South Korea was in 1998, and back then, it was a folkloric and unforgettable experience with a dictionary 😄

Two months is amazing for really enjoying yourself and taking your time. Just watch out for the rain, especially in July. With such a long stay, also consider checking out Jeju and Ulleungdo Island.

I don’t have a choice about my vacation dates, but I’ve read travel journals where people still had a great time traveling in July.

Yeah, you can enjoy it, but June and July are the wettest months. You might need to adjust your plans 😅

The article isn’t very reassuring, but when I’m in Korea, I’ll have to check a reliable weather site to decide where to go. Anyway, I’m not planning everything down to the day—I’ll figure it out once I’m there.

I’ll definitely come back with more questions—I see there are several knowledgeable folks on this forum.
