I’m heading to India in April 2007 for a month (Delhi, Varanasi, Rajasthan). I’d love to know how Indian women dress. I’ve been searching but keep landing on sites without photos. I’ve read a lot, but I’d really like to see. I’m planning to travel light and buy clothes there, but I have no idea what to expect. My partner showed me some photos he took, but I’d like to know more.

Has anyone here done the same or brought their own clothes? I want to blend in as much as possible (disappear into the crowd), which is why I want to dress like them. Does anyone have a site to recommend?

With age, we're just spending a quiet month in southern India, a country we particularly love... Our journey starts in Kovalam, then Monroe Island, Varkala, Kochi, Kannur, Udupi, and finally, as in recent years, Gokarna. No problem getting around—there’s the train all along the coast...

Night in Trivandrum

Prepaid taxi to the « Safire Residency », where we stayed last year. This hotel is still just as nice and welcoming (980 INR). Then, dinner at the restaurant « Ariya Niwas » where we enjoyed those delicious dosas again! (We missed them!)

I’m thinking of heading to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in early 2026.

Two places I’m curious about: Tiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu) and Kollegal (Karnataka).

For Tiruvannamalai, I’ve already found quite a bit of info on this forum, but the most recent posts are from 2018. Has anyone been there more recently? My plan is to stay for about a week, book a guesthouse, visit the big Shiva temple, Ramana Maharshi’s ashram, and the caves in the mountain. Any other spots in this town you’d recommend? Would you happen to know a nice guesthouse (preferably around 1500 rupees, doesn’t need to be near the ashram)?

As for Kollegal, I’m not finding much info. And I’m stuck on this permit issue for staying in the town. Can anyone fill me in?

We're leaving on January 28th for a trip around Rajasthan. I'm trying to fill out the online form to get our visa, but when I reach the 3rd page and hit submit to move to the next one, everything gets erased and I can't continue. I've tried from multiple computers, our iPhones, and different browsers—nothing works. Has anyone else run into this issue? Thanks

We’re 4 friends (2 couples), and we did a 3-week loop in Rajasthan, stopping by Delhi and Agra (which, as everyone knows, aren’t in Rajasthan 😛). Delhi - Agra - Jaipur - Bundi - Udaipur - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer - Delhi

Good evening everyone. I’m so glad VoyageForum is back up and running. This forum has helped me plan so many trips thanks to all your contributions. So, I’m turning to you for advice on a trip I’m planning for March 2025, from the 7th to the 21st. I was thinking of a classic itinerary: Arrival in Delhi at 12:05 AM on Saturday, then taking a train in the afternoon to Agra. 2 nights in Agra 2 nights in Jaipur 2 nights in Pushkar 2 nights in Jodhpur 3 nights in Udaipur Then flying back to Delhi. The trip would mostly be by train (which we love) and bus. However, after reading various travelers’ comments, some cities seem less interesting, while others I hadn’t included—like Bundi and Jaisalmer—are catching my eye. But traveling by train and bus, I’m worried it might get really complicated. I’m not sure how to organize my stay anymore, especially since we love nature and peace and quiet… and I’m afraid of too much hassle if everything isn’t planned. Our trip through Nepal, Rajasthan, South India, and the Andaman Islands. Dates: October 26 to January 14, 2025 Departure from Geneva to Kathmandu.

NEPAL, one month. 2 days of exploring between Kathmandu and Patan. 14 days of trekking from Kathmandu to Langtang, passing by sacred lakes. Trek with a French-speaking guide and 2 porters from the local French-speaking tour operator "NEPAL VOYAGE." Ended with a helicopter ride due to a wrist fracture on black ice at 3,900m. 3 days in the hospital in Kathmandu. Continued the trip in Nepal with a self-guided stay in Bhaktapur and Pokhara. Returned to Kathmandu by plane, then flew to Delhi.

RAJASTHAN. 18 days touring Rajasthan with a French-speaking driver "RAVINDRA MENA." Highlights: Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur*, Ranakpur*, Udaipur*, Bundi, Pushkar*, Jaipur, Agra, Jaipur (Top spots marked with *). Flight from Jaipur to Kochi.

KERALA. Kochi, 3 nights—disappointing, but the Backwaters to the north by scooter were stunning and not touristy. Kochi to Varkala by Uber with a Canadian couple. Varkala, 4 nights—great for relaxing, but scooter rentals weren’t available, which was a shame. Varkala to Munroe Island by train. 2 nights in Monroe. Munroe Island to Kumilly. 2 nights on Christmas Day—meh, not much to do since all the park excursions were booked by Indian tourists. Kumilly to Munnar by local taxi, negotiated the day before. Munnar—processions, tea fields, and *so* many Indian tourists during this period that it was impossible to find scooters to rent.

TAMIL NADU Crossed Tamil Nadu from Munnar to Auroville in 3 days, stopping at the extraordinary Tamil temples of Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur, Darasuram, Chidambaram, and others. With the lunar conjunction, pilgrimages, and year-end holidays, there were *tons* of pilgrims! Auroville to Pondicherry by scooter, then a tuk-tuk for New Year’s Eve—still *so* crowded! Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram by local bus. Mahabalipuram, 2 nights—nice and chill. Mahabalipuram to Chennai by Uber.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS Chennai to Port Blair by flight, Andaman Islands. Port Blair, 2 nights—almost too much! Speedboat to Havelock, 4 nights—still lots of Indian tourism. Couldn’t go snorkeling with a dive operator or rent gear. Luckily, we managed to buy some and do it ourselves. Speedboat to Neil Island, 3 days, 2 nights—too short, but excellent snorkeling from "Elephant, Four Wise Men." Phew, no biting flies, and we weren’t eaten by crocodiles. Back to Port Blair, then Delhi, one night, and return to Geneva.

Our impressions of India. Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu—we eventually got tired of palaces and temples. It’s always complicated and exhausting to get around on foot in the cities. During the year-end period from mid-December to mid-January, *so* many tourists! The Andaman Islands were a bit disappointing—too short, and for snorkeling, Indonesia is easier and less expensive.

Today I ended up being denied boarding at CDG. I booked the trip through a physical travel agency with no assistance for the visa application. I applied in plenty of time and got the approval. Except I put the 9th (the day I left France) as the date instead of the 10th, which is the arrival date in India. That’s what caused the denial. I’m guessing I don’t have any recourse? I’ve been reading conflicting info about whether an Indian visa might be required for a few-hour layover in Mumbai.

Do we need anything besides the Sri Lankan ETA if we’re just transiting through India without leaving Terminal 2 at the airport? We’re flying from Brussels via Frankfurt and then Mumbai with Lufthansa.

I’m not sure if this is a good idea... but I’m throwing a message in a bottle out there again...

I’m looking for a hotel in New Delhi for the end of the month (just one night—for a layover). I’m wary of scams on the usual sites. You find all sorts of prices and huge discounts... but reviews on other platforms scream "scam" about those same hotels. Not that I’m not up for adventure, but if I can avoid making an avoidable mistake, I’d rather learn and discover with kind people than through unscrupulous tourist touts. At the same time, maybe this’ll be helpful to others too.

Is a budget of 40 € (+/-) doable? 50 € (+/-)? Does that sound reasonable? What do you think? Your experiences would really help me out. Thanks, friends.

I’m planning a hiking trip to India in 2025 with my wife and another couple.

We’ll most likely be leaving at the end of April (TBC).

This isn’t my first time hiking abroad, and I’ve often run into parasites that take advantage of the night to bother you (you know what I’m talking about, haha).

I’ve dealt with flies, mosquitoes, and all kinds of critters during my sleep before, but for this trip to India—which could already be pretty hectic—I really want to be prepared and avoid this issue.

If you know where I can find effective mosquito nets that won’t give me any trouble with mosquitoes, I’m all ears!

Hi there, I bought a flight ticket with Air India departing from Paris and arriving in Bangkok with a layover in Delhi. I didn’t include my third given name when booking, but it’s on my passport. Could this cause a problem at boarding?

Also, with an 8-hour layover in Delhi—no need to recheck bags or leave the international zone—do I need an Indian transit visa?

My partner and I (we're seniors) are leaving at the end of January for a 40-day trip to India, arriving in Cochin and departing from Delhi. After reading lots of travel journals about India, I’ve put together an itinerary, but I’m worried it might be too (very?) packed... Here’s my plan:

5 or 6 days in the backwaters Munnar: 1 or 2 nights? Ideally next: Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram, Pondi, Mahabalipuram (number of nights in each place to be decided if I keep Tamil Nadu) Flight from Chennai to Varanasi Varanasi: 2 or 3 nights Overnight train to Agra Agra: 1 night Drive to Jaipur with a stop in Fatehpur Sikri Jaipur: 3 nights Bundi: 3 nights Drive to Udaipur with a stop in Chittorgarh? Udaipur: 2 nights Drive to Jodhpur with a stop in Ranakpur Jodhpur: 1 night Jaisalmer: 3 nights Flight to Delhi, then back to France.

This all feels *very* packed. We’re thinking of taking taxis between cities fairly often if public transport is too complicated or time-consuming. Do you think this is doable? Otherwise, the alternative would be to spend more time in Kerala (though we’re not really beach people) and skip Tamil Nadu (which I’d hate to do!!) to focus more on the north instead. We’ve never been to India before, and I’m a little worried about feeling overwhelmed with all the city and temple visits. We’re more used to alternating nature and culture. Looking forward to your valuable advice to finalize our itinerary!

To get his visa, he told me he needs a letter from me confirming that I met him during my trip to his country and that I’m able to host him. He has other contacts in France, and he mentioned he’s asked them for the same thing. I’m reaching out to see if his request is legitimate or if he’s taking advantage of my kindness. Hi there, We’re heading to Gujarat at the end of January for a month, traveling by local transport, and I’m currently trying to figure out how to get from PATAN to BHUJ by train or bus. On the IRTC website, I only found overnight trains, which doesn’t work for us. Do you know if there are any daytime buses leaving from Patan or Palanpur? Hi there, has anyone got recent updates on getting the "PAP", the permit to enter Arunachal? The info I’ve gathered from here and there—pretty unreliable!—suggests it’s impossible to get this permit in Assam (Guwahati) and that it takes about 15 days if you go through an agency (but where are these agencies located???). Thanks for your reply (urgent!).

I arrive in New Delhi on January 5th, and this is the third time I’ve come across what turns out to be a scam (after some research outside of booking.com): dirty places, fake reviews, etc. So I’m starting to distrust booking.com because it really doesn’t seem like a reliable site (at least when it comes to booking hotels in New Delhi).

If you have a good place to stay (max 1500 € per night, and I don’t want a dorm) in New Delhi, I’d love to hear about it! :)

I traveled to India and Nepal in March 2024 and hired a driver through an online agency. No issues—the agency was great, nothing to complain about—but it turns out that booking directly with the driver is much cheaper. Based on my conversations with him, I’m not paid or commissioned in any way; I’m just sharing this to help you save some money and recommend a good driver. So don’t hesitate to DM me if you want his contact info. I’m doing this for you and for the driver, who’d also prefer to keep a little more of the margin instead of it going to the agency.

I used his services for 10 days, and I can only recommend him—he was my guardian angel in India, gave great advice, was super reliable, and very professional. So feel free to ask me for his contact if you’re interested; otherwise, no worries! ^^

Just back from a 3-week trip in northern India, we spent 2 days in Varanasi.
