Who uses the N26 or Revolut card in India?

Hi, I'm about to open an account (payment card) with N26 Black (seems more transparent in its presentation and explanations) or maybe Revolut (but it seems to hide quite a few things). Has anyone here used either of these two cards (or both) in India? Thanks for your feedback and experience with this payment method.

I think you’ll need to open an account in the currency you have the money in. Is it a French or Indian deposit account for you? And for the transfer, you’re looking at fees of 20 to 40 euros or dollars upfront. Revolut is really just for your debit transactions. BNP offers the Cirrus card, which works abroad too. I’ve heard the Revolut card is Russian in origin. If you have a lot of money, isn’t that a risk?

Hi,

I’ve used Revolut in several countries: the US, Norway, and the UK, but not yet in India.

Since opening an account is free and very quick, I’d recommend trying it out for yourself. It can vary from one bank to another, etc. You’ll need to see what works best with your habits.
CH Chaiwala Veteran ·
Revolut also works for bank transfers (used it for a trek booking in Tanzania last year) and for card payments.

It’s not just for withdrawals.
CH Chaiwala Veteran ·
Actually Mamadont, you're talking nonsense 😏 https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolut

And even if it were Russian, what's the problem?
MA Mamadont ·
I don’t think I said anything false about Revolut. It really was two Russians who launched this payment method. If they do it from London, it’s to make more money than from Moscow. But one thing: as soon as I see the word bitcoin, I can smell a scam coming at full speed. Just that alone tells me: something’s off. When bitcoin crashes, there’ll be plenty of players wiped out. Squeezed dry. You’ll see.

Hey,

I stayed in India and Nepal for over 2 months at the start of this year...

I opened an N26 account before leaving, and I saw a promotion for the Black account that was free for 6 months, so I went for it...

And I’m glad I did because I had no issues—unlimited free withdrawals... But most importantly, the debit was immediate on my account, and I received a notification on my phone within seconds for every withdrawal or payment...

I had no surprises; I could withdraw everywhere from Calcutta to Delhi... And I even lent money to my friends because my card was the only one that worked at the ATM in Calcutta airport. (No idea why or if it was related to the card, but my Visa Premier didn’t work at all.)

I always travel with two debit cards just in case... And not once was I able to use my Visa Premier from B for Bank, which, as luck would have it, notified me once I was already there that my card was blocked in India and Nepal and that I needed to call them to unblock it (no toll-free number from India, yeah right)...

I didn’t take my Mastercard Gold from Crédit Mutuel, which is my main account, because it’s way too expensive for travel, and last year I had major issues with their so-called security...

So far, I’ve tested N26 in India, Nepal, Thailand, and China... And I’m keeping this card for my next trip to Oceania in September.

I also find that transfers from my account to N26 are pretty fast...

The only small downside I’ve found with this card is its fragility—I think it’s quite thin and feels really plasticky... You have to protect it; I doubt it’ll last 3 years for frequent travelers...

For payments and withdrawals, it’s super responsive. You just need to sync your account with your phone before leaving (it’s easy to do)... I also set up security that requires me to enter my password AND my fingerprint for every withdrawal or payment. If someone stole my card, they wouldn’t be able to use it without me knowing immediately since the notification pops up on my phone... as long as there’s network coverage, of course. But it’s pretty rare to not have network where there’s a bank terminal...

Revolut... I looked into it, but I don’t see what advantage it offers for my travel style... And financially, it’s not more advantageous than N26... The only difference is N26 is German, while Revolut is British... I wonder what’s going to happen to Revolut once Brexit is fully in effect.

It seems there’s a regular number for international calls/

Revolut... I looked into it and don’t see what the advantage is for how I travel... And financially, it’s no better than N26... Except N26 is German, Revolut is British... I wonder what’ll happen to Revolut once Brexit is finalized.

Do you plan to declare your foreign account, or stay quiet about it?

It seems that the Revolut card is of Russian origin. If you have a lot of money, is it a risk, no?

I’ve never understood how people can give their "I-know-it-all" opinions using "people say" or "it seems that"...

But mostly, I’m not sure I understood much of your city slang...

Revolut isn’t Russian; it’s British. Its two founders have Russian origins, BUT they are indeed British...

As for Bitcoin and such... We’re talking about travel, about having a credit card that doesn’t rip us off as much as our traditional banks, not about switching banks to invest millions of euros... Strange take. 😕

Hey, no way! I was given a number that doesn’t look like a normal one, and this bank still doesn’t answer the phone—just WhatsApp and stuff... Even with a normal number, I’m not one of those people who think it’s okay to pay more than a euro per minute just to use my own account... Security for who, anyway? Them or me?

As for the second question, I’d say it’s just misplaced arrogance...

I also have a BforBank card, and it seems like they answer the phone—at least they did the last time I tried. I agree with you: an international bank card must provide service or shouldn’t exist. Yours and theirs too, since in case of fraud they’ll reimburse you...

The second question would be arrogant? 🤪 Oh well, never mind then.

Michel

Would the second question be arrogant? 🤪 Oh well, too bad then.

Michel

I might have misunderstood, but that’s how I took it... If that wasn’t the case, my bad and my pride then...

I didn’t say no one answered—I didn’t even call, actually, because I was really furious after receiving an email warning me about the block *after* trying to withdraw with her... Maybe a pure coincidence, but why get that email 6 months after opening, the day after an attempted use?

So since I had N26 on me and everything was working fine, I gave up on BFB...

What I find odd is that my friend, who’s with Crédit Agricole (and BFB is a subsidiary), didn’t have his card blocked...

On the other hand, I was able to withdraw in Shanghai and Bangkok on the same trip... It’s really Nepal and India that seem to be the issue... After reading their email, I saw that Ivory Coast wasn’t on B for Bank’s blacklist... Another odd thing in my eyes...

Thanks so much for this info. I also had the feeling that the N26 Black card would suit me better than Revolut. I still have a couple of weeks to think about it

Hi there, I ended up getting a Revolut card and an N26 card. What I'm interested in—since I live in India—is being able to make transactions on merchant sites like MakeMyTrip or IRCTC, for example. And apparently, they don’t accept the Revolut card... Has anyone recently used their Revolut card to make purchases ONLINE, please? Thanks

Yes, thanks, but Fabindia is a very Westernized private company... And when was that? The government’s rejection of international credit cards started about a year ago, and all more or less official sites follow the directives... IRCTC is outright government-run... But maybe I’m worrying for nothing... I used to pay with American Express without any issues, and now it’s rejected on quite a few "official" sites... Thanks again

I'm in Kerala right now and was able to use my Revolut card to buy 2 train tickets online on IRCTC... it wasn't all smooth—at one point the card got blocked, but I unblocked it easily by going into the app. On the other hand, the IRCTC site isn't simple at all... they send SMS passwords (luckily I have an Indian SIM) that work when they feel like it... but that's another story!

Hi Evelyne, Thanks for your feedback. I'm really pleasantly surprised that IRCTC has revised its policy on using international credit cards. It seems to align with the long-term visa policy, which has gone from difficult to obtain to very easy. As for the IRCTC website, it's true that it glitches often, but it's actually very easy to use. You just need to create an account with your username and a password that will always stay the same, and then you won’t need an OTP unless you request one. Once you're registered, I’d recommend downloading the IXIGO app on your phone instead. It’s clear and much easier to use. It’s linked to IRCTC, so you won’t have to log in there anymore. Not sure if I’m being clear. I’ll be back on the 30th. Maybe we could meet up if you’re heading toward Kannur... People are telling me it’s pouring again in Kerala...

Thanks for the info. I had kept my username and password, but it didn’t work, so I created another account. I’ll take a closer look at this app. As for the weather, it’s okay... it’s been nice until around 4 PM, then a storm (no rain today). We’ll probably cross paths since I’m leaving Kochi on the 27th! I’ll be back in mid-February. Yeah, it’d be great to meet in person!

Hi Evelyne, I hope you're doing well and that you're ready for your next trip. I’d love it if you could give us a detailed review of how you’ve been using your Revolut card. Personally, I got both the N26 and Revolut cards because I live in India most of the time, and I need them for online transactions: bookings, purchases, etc. But most merchants either reject both cards, or just Revolut, or just N26—it’s a real hassle to make online purchases, even on Amazon.in. As for ATMs, I only tested them yesterday just to check. N26 didn’t work at all, and with Revolut, I had to try 4 different bank ATMs before SBI finally accepted the transaction. These cards are useless for what I need them for. Lots of marketing hype, but in reality, they’re often unusable. This morning, I still couldn’t top up my phone online because, thanks to Mr. Modi’s policies, BSNL (government-run) doesn’t accept international cards.

My girlfriend had a "normal" card and that didn’t work either. We were about to give up when we came across a pretty sketchy ATM, but it ended up giving both of us cash. And I didn’t get charged any withdrawal fees.

Hi,

I saw on the Revolut site that you can withdraw 200 € per month without fees, and after that, there are fees of around 0.5%??

Thanks! :)

Yes, that’s the case.

Otherwise, there’s the Max card, which doesn’t have the 200 € limit.

Just so you know: - Over the past few months, when I withdrew 10,000 rupees from an ATM using one of my Visa or Mastercard cards, I was charged over 3.5% in fees (between the reduced exchange rate and the "Foreign Cash Withdrawal Commission") — I thought that was excessive; - I just noticed that when I withdraw 10,000 rupees with my ING Direct Mastercard (a free card) from a Canara Bank ATM, (1) I get a perfect exchange rate, meaning it’s not reduced (the same rate I can see on XE.COM, for example) and (2) my bank, ING Direct, charges me a 2% commission; - Conclusion: I find this completely reasonable. The only downside is that I’ll need to find Canara Bank ATMs.

Hi everyone, I’m reviving this thread because I have some questions about the Revolut card. We have the metal card, and online and in-person payments work great everywhere. The issue is with ATM withdrawals. Our card got swallowed in Indonesia, and we managed to get it back. We were told that the metallic aspect of the card was why the ATM kept it. Revolut’s chat support says it’s supposed to work everywhere, but obviously, we’re a bit wary after that experience... Has anyone tried withdrawing with the metal card?
