Nous programmons un voyage en Islande en 4X4 en juillet 2010.
Nous envisageons d'emprunter la piste F910 qui relie Askja à la F26.
Avez-vous parcouru cette piste pendant l'été 2010? Votre expérience m'intéresse.
Nous avons une bonne expérience du 4X4 et le véhicule sera un type "G" suzuki Grand Vitara.
Faut-il compter 8 à 10 heures pour ce trajet? Est-il aussi pénible que cela?

Nous avons pris la piste F910 en aout dernier, dans le sens sud-ouest vers Askja. On avait un relativement bon 4x4 je crois (un toyota Landcruiser, mais j'y connais pas grand chose en mécanique) et on a du mettre effectivement près de 8h pour ralier Askja depuis l'intersection avec la F26.
Ca a été très long, mais honnêtement, je ne plains pas du tout le temps qu'on y a passé. On passe dans des paysages superbes, désertiques et sauvages, parfois on se croit vraiment sur la Lune !
Et au cours de ces 8h de routes, on n'a croisé personne ! C'était assez dingue...
Enfin, on n'a pas roulé 8h d'affilé, ca n'aurait pas été tenable. On a bivouaqué à mi-chemin (en dressant la tente sous des flocons de neige un 21 aout !)
Sinon, pour info, il existe deux F910, une qui longe le Vatnajokull et qui fait une boucle au sud, et une plus recente qui fait une boucle au nord. Nous avons pris la F910 nord. Et vu l'état de celle là, je n'imagine même pas l'état de la F910 sud qui est réputée moins praticable !
Bref, oui ca prend du temps, mais il me semble que ca les vaut. Mais attention à prendre un jerrican d'essence en rab (on aurait pu finalement s'en passer, mais ca me semble plus sur...) et il faut bien faire attention, rouler d'autant plus doucement qu'il n'y a pas de garage à moins de 8h de routes et qu'on ne croise vraiment pas grand monde !
Je vais essayer de te mettre des photos des paysages de la F910 nord...

Oui Claire t'a assez bien résumé la situation de la F910. Cependant je rajouterai que la F910 dans son ensemble (de la F26 au lac Lagarfjot) est une des dernières piste à être ouverte chaque année, j'en veux pour exemple l'été 2008 où j'étais passé sur cette piste un 04 juillet et elle venait d'être ouverte juste 2/3 jours avant. Cette année (2009), si mes souvenirs sont bons (je n'en suis pas sûr) elle n'a été ouverte qu'à partir du 15 juillet car les conditions climatiques (neige, ...) étaient trop mauvaises. Les précautions de Claire sont juste, attention la piste est vraiment très très peu empruntée, donc vaut mieux éviter l'accident, sinon paysages dantesques, l'enfer est tout proche !!!!!!

J'en déduis qu'il ne sera pas évident de programmer un logement quand on n'a pas la certitude que la piste sera ouverte.
C'est le seul ? de notre voyage. Nous reterons 3 semaines.
Et, peut-être, sans vouloir abuser, pourrai-je à l'occasion "profiter" de votre expérience du pays.

Oui, nous avons planté la tente sur le bord de la route, à mi distance d'Askja environ. Je ne sais pas si vous comptez camper ou dormir en refuge, mais si vous prenez la F910 il y a au moins 120 km à parcourir sans croiser la moindre installation (en dehors de la route plus ou moins balisée)
Bref, 120 km, on a bien mis 6 heures à les faire. Je ne sais pas si vous êtes habitués à la conduite en terrain très accidenté, mais moi je trouve ça épuisant ! Faire une vraie pause en bivouaquant en chemin, ca fait vraiment du bien. Et puis bivouaquer dans un décors à ce point lunaire, c'est irréel !
Et au pire, il y a toujours moyen de dormir dans la voiture...
Nous réfléchissons aux différentes possibilités (nous n'avions pas imaginé dormir dans la voiture; nous sommes2; mais si c'est prévu dès le départ, on prend les dispositions adéquates).
J'ai compris qu'il serait dommage de "rater" cette étape en filant directement vers Myvatn.

olala !!! l'étape d'Askja et du désert d'Odáðahraun est à voir absolument !!!! Quand on parle Islande, souvent c'est les mêmes sujets qui reviennent : Myvatn, Laugar, Skaftafell, ... Les gens oublient souvent la région de l'Askja mais moi perso c'est l'endroit qui me le plus faciné, là bas on est plus sur Terre ...

J'ai l'impression que nous ne parlons en fait pas de la même piste avec Régis. Mais c'est pas simple de s'y retrouver dans ces numéros !
Je t'ai mis en pièce jointe une carte d'Islande avec les différentes pistes dont nous parlons. Moi je te parle de la partie de la F910 que j'ai surlignée en rouge. Comme tu peux le voir, y'a une boucle nord et une sud. Ce sont ces 120 km là que nous avons mis plus de 6h à parcourir.
Il me semble que la F26 est celle que j'ai surlignée en vert. Celle là est en excellent état, en tout cas au sud de l'intersection (nous avons fait Hekla -> Askja) et elle a la réputation d'être aussi très bonne sur la partie nord. C'est cette piste que prennent les bus qui font la traversée.
Je suis d'accord avec Régis pour dire que Askja est un site exceptionnel, comme lui, je crois que c'est celui qui m'a le plus émerveillée (et c'est pas peu dire vu la beauté de tous les paysages islandais !)
Mais si tu appréhendes trop la F910, tu peux continuer la F26 jusqu'au nord, passer par Myvatn, puis redescendre sur Askja par la piste que j'ai surligné en violet (F88?) et continuer ensuite vers Egilsstadir avec la F910 qui se prolonge jusque là (et qui est la portion dont parle Régis je crois...)
Dans ce cas, tu peux trouver des chambres d'hôtes dans la région de Myvatn, puis dormir au refuge d'Askja. Il me semble qu'il y a alors moins de temps à rouler sans aucune installation.
Je maintiens que la F910 traverse des paysages magnifiques, mais si vous ne voulez pas dormir en tente ou dans la voiture, ca me semble un peu long...

Nous avions un RAV4 et nous sommes partis de Mytvan le matin, avons pris la F88 et retour par la F910 Est.
Le tout pour 300 km dans la journée avec montée à pied à l'Askja
Passage de 3 gués avec de l'eau jusque dessus le capot moteur
Un très bon souvenir surtout avec le beau temps (en 2006)

Exact Claire, en fait nous parlons de la même piste mais pas de la même portion de piste !!!! Mais tout cela je l'avais bien compris dès le départ, c'est bien de la partie sud sud-ouest de la F910 que vous parlez, e moi de la partie ouest. Cela dit je supposais que les paysages devaient être aussi grandioses et prenants à l'est qu'à l'ouest !!!! Il ne faut pas hestier à s'arrêter sur la piste et bien se mettre dans la tête que l'on est seul au milieu de nulle part, et qu'à une époque pas si lointaine c'était la mort ici !!!! Quand l'Askja ou l'Herdubreid jouaient au feu d'artifice ... ça prend vraiment aux trippes. Un bémol quand même : dans cette partie d'Islande, attention aux conditions météos qui peuvent devenir terrible en un rien de temps (brouillard, pluie, vent, neige, froid, ...) et la sensation de peur peu vite submerger la tête !!! donc attention surtout si notre ami part à pied pour découvrir la caldeira de l'Oskjuvatn, faut le faire par grand beau temps.

Donc tenant compte des vos remarques :
- le rapport longueur / temps du parcours (110 km et 8 heures);
- l'impossibilité de savoir à quelle date la piste sera ouverte et dans quel état elle sera (nous y serons vers le 10 juillet);
- nous logeons dans des fermes ou hôtels et n'emportons pas d'équipement de camping;
- nous serons probablement seuls sur le parcours (l'expérience du tout terrain n'empêche pas d'avoir un problème. Partir à deux véhicules change complètement les données, mais comme nous serons seuls...)
Nous avons donc choisi de monter vers Myvatn directement par la F26, et comme nous resterons 4 nuits, nous aurons le temps de descendre une journée à Askya par la F88 et revenir, si le temps le permet par la F910 (mais partie Est évidemment!).

Ce n'est vraiment, mais alors vraiment pas à conseiller ! Surtout avec un RAV4 de série. Vous avez eu beaucoup de chance de ne pas rester dedans avec dépannage et grosses réparations moteurs à votre charge !
Même si, après en avoir franchi quelques-uns, ça paraît facile, il faut savoir rester modeste face aux gués islandais, surtout avec un 4x4 de série. Pourquoi les Islandais rehaussent-ils tellement leurs engins ?
OK Pierre tu nous l'as déjà dit, mais nous avions un conducteur formé à la conduite TT.
Mais effectivement il faut être prudent: se renseigner, sonder, voir les véhicules que l'on croise et éventuellement attendre un autre véhicule pour s'aider le cas échéant.

C'est effectivement plus sage , les portions F88 et F910 ( Est et Nord-Est ) sont autrement plus "facile" que la portion F910 entre Askja et la F26 ( ancienne le long du Vatnajokull ou nouvelle au Nord) . A savoir que l'affichage dans les refuges de Dreki ( Askja) et de Nyadalur (F26) conseille fortement de ne pas s'engager à un seul véhicule sur cette portion et de prévenir de son départ et arrivée dans les 2 refuges . De plus un Vitara de série n'est pas blindé en dessous et ne possède pas une garde au sol suffisante pour ce genre de piste : pas sûr que l'assurance des agences de location fonctionne sur ce type de piste. Le gué sur la F910 situé à 5 km de la F26 est redoutable : rien à voir avec ceux de la F88 . Sur cette piste on ne voit que des "big-foot" islandais ( 4x4 réhaussés et chaussés de pneus énormes) et des 4x4 perso un minimun préparés de continentaux : pas de 4x4 de location . La densité de véhicules y reste de toute façon très faible : en 2005 au mieux 5/jour au moment où j'y étais.

Je m'invite dans la discussion pour confirmer que tu ne seras pas tout seul....Nous y serons aussi. Pour moi c'est un pelerinage. J'ai fais cette piste (l'ancienne, celle qui longe le Vatna) en VTT en 1989, en venant du Sud et je m'etais tjrs promis d'y revenir. C'est effectivement un endroit magique, et qui vaut le detour. Cette fois se sera en 4x4 (Nissan Patrol) et avec la famille. Mon projet est presque boucle, et d'apres mon road book, nous ferons cette etape le 15.07.2010 en venant de Hrauneyafoss. J'ai reserve au refude du Dreki pour avoir un point de chute, mais compte tenu des kms et de l'incertitude de l'etat de la piste, on la jouera flexible avec eventuelement un bivouac sur le chemin.

Il était prévu de prendre cette piste le 12 juillet (presque en même temps que toi!).
Nous avons décidé de faire la "grande boucle" et d'aller à Askja via Myvatn. Comme je l'ai dit, les "expéditions" de ce type, en général je les fais à 2 voitures et 2 chauffeurs expérimentés. Mais je te souhaite beaucoup de plaisir avec le patrol (j'ai roulé en Afrique avec des nissan patrol pendant 8 ans).
Je me demande comment on passe les gués en VTT?

We’re planning a short trip at the end of July to explore the legendary mountains and valleys of the Bernese Oberland: round trip from Nancy (Swiss highway vignette planned), 2 nights in a room with a small kitchen in Adelboden, then 2 nights in a hotel at the Gletscherblick in Grindelwald, both with half-board included.
Could you share some tips on the best road routes to take, as well as some walking hikes (we’re not as fit as we used to be, so nothing longer than 2-3 hours)? Maybe also 1 or 2 cable car rides—I was thinking of Oeschinensee Lake above Kandersteg and the First gondola above Grindelwald for better panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau... all while keeping it doable with our schedule. We’ve ruled out the "premium" trip up to the Jungfraujoch for this time.
I’m also guessing that paying to access Wengen or Mürren only makes sense if we’re staying there for a few days, right?

I visited the Faroe Islands in late March 2026 for about ten days. I was invited by a friend who lives near Tórshavn, so I don’t have any info on tourist accommodations or car rentals. Still, I’d like to share a few thoughts about my trip:
- Before leaving, I consulted travel guides and blogs. I was surprised by how repetitive and unoriginal the featured sites were. This leads hurried travelers to follow the same overcrowded routes, which can annoy locals. I found that all Faroese villages were interesting—they reflect the country’s identity, even without the iconic grass-roofed houses. Those are indeed harmonious and beautiful, but they feel like an exotic cliché. For activities, I loved the lively ports that keep the country running.
- I was annoyed by the paid trails in tourist spots. Locals explained that these paths cross private land, and owners are responsible for maintenance and safety. There are plenty of free trails, too—signs at the start detail their features. While not alarmist, the extreme and unpredictable weather is a key factor to consider before setting out.
- The wind’s strength really impressed me. The architecture, with doors and windows opening outward to prevent gusts from blowing roofs off, speaks to the harsh climate. Some days, relentless rain and squalls made going outside unappealing. I realized that in this country, it’s best to plan for flexible indoor days.
- Distances are relatively short. I was happy to be based near Tórshavn because it was easy to explore one or more places in a day. The roads are in great condition. In late March, diesel was 2 €. Tunnel tolls can add up (~26 € per crossing), making a fixed base less practical than I’d thought.
- Everyone agrees: the landscapes are breathtaking. Nature feels untamed here—except for the short grass, thanks to all the woolly sheep.
- The flight from Paris to the Faroe Islands (and back) was long in March—11 hours with three legs: Paris-Amsterdam, Amsterdam-Copenhagen, Copenhagen-Vágar. In bad weather, Vágar Airport can close, causing delays. During tourist season, Atlantic Airways offers a direct Paris-Faroe Islands flight, which is more comfortable and cheaper.
- I found a book recommendation in a guide that fascinated me after my trip: *Les collectionneurs d'images* by Joanes Nielsen. Through its sometimes caricatured characters, it offers a glimpse into Faroese mentalities from the 1950s to 1970s—attitudes that likely persist today.
In conclusion, I’ve traveled a lot and I’m tired of destinations that all start to look the same. The Faroe Islands were a delight—a country stunning in its landscape, climate, and culture, where tourism has barely altered its authenticity.

Hello,
We’re heading to Bavaria from May 13 to 23, with a side trip to Austria.
Here’s our itinerary:
Day 1: Brussels-Munich
Day 2: Munich
Day 3: Munich and departure for Salzburg
We’ll be staying three nights in Salzburg.
Then we’ll head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we’ll stay for five nights.
Visiting Munich and Salzburg isn’t too tricky.
Once in Garmisch, we’re planning a day in Innsbruck, a day for Neuschwanstein Castle, and the rest is still up in the air.
What’s really got me stumped is that we’d love to see Königssee Lake—everyone says it’s a must-see.
We’d also like to visit the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), where the landscapes are supposedly stunning.
This would either be a round trip while we’re in Salzburg or on the way between Salzburg and Garmisch, but I’m guessing it’s impossible to do the drive from Salzburg to Garmisch, the Eagle’s Nest, *and* Königssee Lake all in one day.
Plus, the Alpine route between Salzburg and Garmisch seems prettier than the highway.
But honestly, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the planning.
We should’ve added a stop between Salzburg and Garmisch, but the hotels are already booked.

We’re planning a trip to Finland and Norway this summer, starting in Oulu to explore Lapland, heading up to the North Cape, and then making our way down to Bergen.
This route means renting a car in Finland and dropping it off in Norway. My initial searches are showing rental rates that are... astronomical—about three times the price compared to returning it at the starting point.
I’m guessing I’m not the only one wanting to visit both countries. Are there any great tips to drastically reduce the cost of renting a car?

I’m sharing my draft itinerary with you because I just booked our flight tickets, and I feel like it’s quite late in the season. So, I’d like to be sure about my stops before reserving the hotels. I’ll be traveling alone with my two adult children. We want to prioritize outdoor walks, avoid too many indoor visits (both for budget and preference), and not spend too much time on the road.
D1: Arrival at 9 AM in Malaga, day in Malaga and overnight stay
D2: Head straight to Nerja (1-hour drive) and spend the night there
D3: Head straight to Granada (1.5-hour drive), spend the day and night there
D4: Granada. Visit the Alhambra (Nasrid Palaces tour at 5 PM) and spend the night
D5: Head to Ronda (2.5-hour drive) and spend the night
D6: White Villages and overnight in Ronda
D7: Head straight to the Costa del Sol (e.g., Estepona), spend the day and night there
D8: Return to Malaga to catch our flight
There you go! This itinerary takes into account that we’d like to do a circuit starting from Seville in a few years. That said, it’d be a shame to miss something doable from Malaga.
Questions:
Since the Alhambra visit is only at 5 PM, and we’d already have the day to explore Granada, would arriving the day before be a mistake? Or should we skip this day and dedicate it elsewhere (Costa del Sol? Head toward Tabernas?)? The old town appeals to me, but maybe the Sacromonte neighborhood isn’t essential...
Same question for Ronda: should we dedicate a full day to it, or combine Ronda and the White Villages in one day?
Note that we love wandering around villages outside, so that might answer my question! :)
Final question: Is it better to rent the car at Malaga Airport or in the city? If we rent at the airport, we’d need a hotel with parking, which doesn’t seem easy. Or stay outside the city and park for free near the center if possible? I’ve read comments about taking a taxi to Malaga and then picking up the rental car at the airport the next morning. The taxi would really need to be affordable...
