Nous sommes deux à vouloir faire un petit tour du côté des balkans en partant de Rouen (Rouen-Italie du Nord- Croatie, Bosnie...) durant le mois d'août 2009. Après mûres réflexions autour de notre moyen de transport, nous avons opté pour la voiture. C'est alors qu'en toute insouciance nous nous sommes lancés dans un petit tour des agences-de-location-de-véhicules-en-ligne... quand soudain... CATASTROPHE!
On me fait savoir que le superbe papier rose qui m'a été offert un jour de grande joie n'a finalement que peu de valeur! Ce bout de carton qu'un monsieur certifié, breveté, dîplomé formé pour attester à son tour si tel ou tel individu est en mesure de prendre en main n'importe quel véhicule de catégorie B à condition qu'il décore sa petite auto d'un A rouge entouré de blanc pendant 2 ans... Et bien voyez vous MOI JE L'AI MOI! le papier rose qui me qualifie de conducteur! Jeune conducteur certes! Mais autonome, compétant et responsable!
Trève de plaisanteries, nous nous voyons refusé la location d'un véhicule sous prétexte qu'en août prochain mon permis de conduire aura 1 an et 11 mois et que mon âge n'excédera pas les 20 ans... (je prend 20 ans le 25 août). Nous voilà donc coupé en pleine course, alors qu'on se voyait déja sur les routes bosniennes avec tout notre nécessaire dans le coffre (on souhaite faire du spectacle de rue) et nos portes vélos chargés sur le toit (oui... ça a été dur d'abandonné nos ambitions écologiques pour se mettre à tousser de l'hydrocarbure à tout va, alors bon on embarque les vélos quand même! Pour s'en servir à maximum!)...
Alors avant que l'on se résigne à prendre moins de matériel et partir en train (interrail...?), est-ce que quelqu'un aurait une solution pour que nous puissions acquérir, pour un temps, unevoiture? (Outre le recours à un proche...). En d'autres termes: Qui nous passe sa caisse pour le mois d'août prochain? Promis on est un gentil petit couple tout à fait sérieux!

La plupart des agences de location exigent un permis de conduire validé depuis plus de 2 ans et/ou un conducteur âgé de plus de 21 ans. Ne m'en demande pas la justification, ça m'a fait rager très souvent aussi.
Pour répondre à ta question, je pense qu'une variante train-bus-autostop peut être tout à fait raisonnable, outre le fait que tu auras la liberté de ne pas te soucier de ton véhicule, le prix de l'essence... Et puis c'est "l'aventure" ! Et tous ces pays ex-communistes ont une desserte en transports en commun qui n'ai rien de commun (justement, haha la blague) avec ce à quoi on est habitué en France.
Si tu insistes pour obtenir une voiture, je pense que la seule solution est un achat de véhicule d'occasion. A moins que tu ne trouves une agence altruiste ? Toujours est-il que tu peux t'acheter des titines pour trois fois rien, pas en France certes, mais en Allemagne, République Tchèque, Autriche, Pologne, Slovaquie, ... et naturellement en Bosnie aussi. Ceci dit, je ne suis pas sûr que ce soit la meilleure option, enfin... Je l'avais fait une fois, une voiture à 2000 CZK ( 75€ ) et m'en souvenir provoque systématiquement un fou-rire. J'ai pourtant été contraint de l'abandonner assez rapidement, car sa conduite devenait vraiment très dangereuse. Aussi, à moins d'investir un millier d'euros pour obtenir un véhicule à peu près raisonnable, à moins que tu aies le goût du risque.... rabats toi sur le train.

Je ne suis pas d'accord. Le train est certes pas toujours sûr et ne dessert que les grandes villes dans la plupart des pays des Balkans, mais les bus n'ont absolument rien à envier à la France. La France pourrait même prendre des leçons, car il y a des dessertes souvent 24h sur 24 ...
Je pense Ljubavi que Kedor vantait aussi le mérite du réseau de bus dans les balkans... Pour ma part, la seule expérience autocaresque que j'ai pu avoir dans les balkans s'est manifestée par 3h30 d'attente à la gare routière de Mostar... MAIS je n'en fais pas une généralité! Je vous rassure!
J'insiste, sérieusement (et rêveusement), si quelqu'un a une belle voiture robuste a nous prêter pour le mois d'août (contre rémunération s'il le faut!) qu'il n'hésite pas hein!

Tu sais Faabien (et ne prends pas cette remarque pour une injure), je pense que tu es naïf de croire que quelqu'un te prêterait sa voiture, même contre rémunération. La raison en est simple : l'assurance. En effet, tu ne serais pas assuré sur le véhicule, et le faire serait sans doute assez coûteux, outre les démarches longues et rébarbatives auprès des assurances. De plus, une voiture est un objet auquel on est généralement attaché, rien qu'à cause de son prix, et puis certains vivent réellement la conduite : la laisser à un parfait inconnu venant d'internet est pour le moins téméraire. Enfin, quelle est la garantie que tu rendrais le véhicule ? Caution ? As-tu 10 000€ en liquide à prêter à quelqu'un ?
L'opération est donc bien trop risquée pour le propriétaire du véhicule, et douteuse pour toi : imagine que tu tombes sur un filou, qui refuse de te rendre ta caution, tu feras quoi ? Porter plainte avec déclaration sur l'honneur ? On aura vu mieux comme preuve...
Pour ma part, je t'aurais bien prêté ma voiture, rien que parce que ça me permettrait d'amortir le coût de son achat, et puis je ne me souviens que trop bien des moments où j'en cherchais désespéremment une. Et comme je n'en aurais pas besoin cet été... Oui mais voilà, l'assurance. Et il n'y a malheureusement pas grand chose à faire : assurer une tierce personne est cher, et c'est un engagement sur une durée assez longue qu'il faut signer.
En fait, "louer" une voiture à un particulier serait non seulement un risque énorme, mais en plus très lourd d'un point de vue financier.
Alors deux solutions s'ouvrent à toi : les transports en commun, et n'en déplaise à Ljubavi, tu t'en sortiras toujours, que ce soit en bus ou en train (même si ton expérience est assez mauvaise, tu as dû jouer de malchance). Ou alors l'achat d'un véhicule. En fait, tu n'as pas dit quelle était la durée de ton voyage ? Car s'il s'agit d'un mois ou plus, alors l'achat peut même être moins cher que la somme que tu n'aurais laissé en location.

J'avais en effet conscience des frais engendrés par un prêt et du fétichisme que l'on accorde à la voiture, mais je me suis dit que bon... On ne sait jamais! EN tout cas merci Kedor pour ce bien bel argumentaire, sous tes conseils je vais chercher des alternatives... Le pass interrail n'est pas si mal que ça, j'en ai fait l'expérience l'an passé, mais le train a un effet vicieux: la dépendance des grandes villes! Avec le train, impossible de s'enfoncer au coeur des pays! La Bosnie Herzégovine m'a profondément marqué l'an passé et je voulais m'y enfoncer encore plus profondement, aller respirer l'air de ses montagnes, y rencontrer sa population profonde... mais je ne perds pas ma détermination!

Vous savez Kedor, je suis des Balkans... je connais un peu. Et pas seulement en touriste! Nous on ne va pas conseiller le train. On va toujours aller vers le bus, qui est plus sûr même si c'est plus cher. Après si vous connaissez mieux...

Vous croyez tout savoir on dirait. Et bien tant mieux! Vous avez raison. Si ça se trouve vous avez passé quelques jours dans les Balkans et vous voulez m'apprendre ce que c'est alors que j'y vis ... et que je suis de là-bas. Tous les gens en France sont comme ça?
Si les trains ne desservent que les destinations majeures, pour les autres villes il y a forcément un réseau de bus fiable et relativement fréquent : ne t'inquiète donc pas ! Et puis comme je dis, même si je suis un aficionado de la chose, il te reste l'autostop.

Je comprends que ca puisse faire raler, mais les stat sont là...As-tu vu le comportement de certains conducteurs surtout masculin avec "A", bien sur ils ne sont pas tous à mettre dans le meme sac, je suis meme certain qu'un jeune qui fait la démarche de voyager et de louer un véhicule fera tous pour le rendre en bon état..

Certainement que les statistiques sont révélateurs mais est-ce là une raison de sanctionner tout un groupe de personnes parce qu'il se révèle une tendance. Je n'pense pas que la sanction soit ici légitime. Les loueurs de véhicules devraient plutôt axer les sanctions à un degré individuel: prévoir des frais en cas dégâts... Bon certes, cela risque de se terminer à chaque fois en procès ou en montagnes de paperasses, mais cela peut surement être évité grâce à la mise en place d'un règlement intransigeant sur la question! Si il y a dégâts, il y a remboursement POINT, pas d'alternatives possibles! Que l'on ne fasse pas payer à l'ensemble la bêtise de quelques uns me parait être une règle de base.

Je suis viscéralement opposé à toute forme de discrimination au nom de statistiques... Oui mais voilà, eux ne veulent pas perdre leurs véhicules, ou être liés dans des histoires d'accident qui peut s'avérer mortel. Ils préfèrent donc éliminer une clientèle qui de toute manière n'a pas souvent les moyens de recourir à leur services, et avoir statistiquement moins d'ennuis.

Dans ce cas, ça revient à ne louer des véhicules qu'aux personnes déposant une caution de la valeur du véhicule au moins : aucun jeune, ni d'ailleurs les 9/10 des loueurs, n'ont les moyens de ce faire. Et pour la compagnie, il sera bien difficile d'obtenir gain de cause avec un particulier insolvable... Rationalisme financier et volonté de simplicité législative obligent :-)

😕 Le problème est que tu n'est redevable de la franchise en cas de sinistre, ma dernière location 375 €, et c'est l'assureur de la companie de location qui prend le reste en charge.Tu plies un véhicule à 15.000€, ca te coute la franchise...C'est plutot les assureurs qui sont frileux...
Et bien en m'achetant une voiture... Je ne nourrit aucune haine particulière envers les transports en communs, au contraire, pour les avoir utilisés tout au long de l'été dernier ils sont un bon moyens de rencontres... mais disons qu'avec mon amie nous souhaitons embarquer du matériel quelque peu encombrant (instruments de musique, objets de jonglage, échasses, costumes...) car nous souhaitons jouer des spectacles de rues tout au long de notre route! We’re planning a short trip at the end of July to explore the legendary mountains and valleys of the Bernese Oberland: round trip from Nancy (Swiss highway vignette planned), 2 nights in a room with a small kitchen in Adelboden, then 2 nights in a hotel at the Gletscherblick in Grindelwald, both with half-board included.
Could you share some tips on the best road routes to take, as well as some walking hikes (we’re not as fit as we used to be, so nothing longer than 2-3 hours)? Maybe also 1 or 2 cable car rides—I was thinking of Oeschinensee Lake above Kandersteg and the First gondola above Grindelwald for better panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau... all while keeping it doable with our schedule. I visited the Faroe Islands in late March 2026 for about ten days. I was invited by a friend who lives near Tórshavn, so I don’t have any info on tourist accommodations or car rentals. Still, I’d like to share a few thoughts about my trip:
- Before leaving, I consulted travel guides and blogs. I was surprised by how repetitive and unoriginal the featured sites were. This leads hurried travelers to follow the same overcrowded routes, which can annoy locals. I found that all Faroese villages were interesting—they reflect the country’s identity, even without the iconic grass-roofed houses. Those are indeed harmonious and beautiful, but they feel like an exotic cliché. For activities, I loved the lively ports that keep the country running.
- I was annoyed by the paid trails in tourist spots. Locals explained that these paths cross private land, and owners are responsible for maintenance and safety. There are plenty of free trails, too—signs at the start detail their features. While not alarmist, the extreme and unpredictable weather is a key factor to consider before setting out.
- The wind’s strength really impressed me. The architecture, with doors and windows opening outward to prevent gusts from blowing roofs off, speaks to the harsh climate. Some days, relentless rain and squalls made going outside unappealing. I realized that in this country, it’s best to plan for flexible indoor days.
- Distances are relatively short. I was happy to be based near Tórshavn because it was easy to explore one or more places in a day. The roads are in great condition. In late March, diesel was 2 €. Tunnel tolls can add up (~26 € per crossing), making a fixed base less practical than I’d thought.
- Everyone agrees: the landscapes are breathtaking. Nature feels untamed here—except for the short grass, thanks to all the woolly sheep.
- The flight from Paris to the Faroe Islands (and back) was long in March—11 hours with three legs: Paris-Amsterdam, Amsterdam-Copenhagen, Copenhagen-Vágar. In bad weather, Vágar Airport can close, causing delays. During tourist season, Atlantic Airways offers a direct Paris-Faroe Islands flight, which is more comfortable and cheaper.
- I found a book recommendation in a guide that fascinated me after my trip: *Les collectionneurs d'images* by Joanes Nielsen. Through its sometimes caricatured characters, it offers a glimpse into Faroese mentalities from the 1950s to 1970s—attitudes that likely persist today.
In conclusion, I’ve traveled a lot and I’m tired of destinations that all start to look the same. The Faroe Islands were a delight—a country stunning in its landscape, climate, and culture, where tourism has barely altered its authenticity.

We’re heading to Bavaria from May 13 to 23, with a side trip to Austria.
Here’s our itinerary:
Day 1: Brussels-Munich
Day 2: Munich
Day 3: Munich and departure for Salzburg
We’ll be staying three nights in Salzburg.
Then we’ll head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we’ll stay for five nights.
Visiting Munich and Salzburg isn’t too tricky.
Once in Garmisch, we’re planning a day in Innsbruck, a day for Neuschwanstein Castle, and the rest is still up in the air.
What’s really got me stumped is that we’d love to see Königssee Lake—everyone says it’s a must-see.
We’d also like to visit the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), where the landscapes are supposedly stunning.
This would either be a round trip while we’re in Salzburg or on the way between Salzburg and Garmisch, but I’m guessing it’s impossible to do the drive from Salzburg to Garmisch, the Eagle’s Nest, *and* Königssee Lake all in one day.
Plus, the Alpine route between Salzburg and Garmisch seems prettier than the highway.
But honestly, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the planning.
We should’ve added a stop between Salzburg and Garmisch, but the hotels are already booked.

We’re planning a trip to Finland and Norway this summer, starting in Oulu to explore Lapland, heading up to the North Cape, and then making our way down to Bergen.
This route means renting a car in Finland and dropping it off in Norway. My initial searches are showing rental rates that are... astronomical—about three times the price compared to returning it at the starting point.
I’m guessing I’m not the only one wanting to visit both countries. Are there any great tips to drastically reduce the cost of renting a car?

I’m sharing my draft itinerary with you because I just booked our flight tickets, and I feel like it’s quite late in the season. So, I’d like to be sure about my stops before reserving the hotels. I’ll be traveling alone with my two adult children. We want to prioritize outdoor walks, avoid too many indoor visits (both for budget and preference), and not spend too much time on the road.
D1: Arrival at 9 AM in Malaga, day in Malaga and overnight stay
D2: Head straight to Nerja (1-hour drive) and spend the night there
D3: Head straight to Granada (1.5-hour drive), spend the day and night there
D4: Granada. Visit the Alhambra (Nasrid Palaces tour at 5 PM) and spend the night
D5: Head to Ronda (2.5-hour drive) and spend the night
D6: White Villages and overnight in Ronda
D7: Head straight to the Costa del Sol (e.g., Estepona), spend the day and night there
D8: Return to Malaga to catch our flight
There you go! This itinerary takes into account that we’d like to do a circuit starting from Seville in a few years. That said, it’d be a shame to miss something doable from Malaga.
Questions:
Since the Alhambra visit is only at 5 PM, and we’d already have the day to explore Granada, would arriving the day before be a mistake? Or should we skip this day and dedicate it elsewhere (Costa del Sol? Head toward Tabernas?)? The old town appeals to me, but maybe the Sacromonte neighborhood isn’t essential...
Same question for Ronda: should we dedicate a full day to it, or combine Ronda and the White Villages in one day?
Note that we love wandering around villages outside, so that might answer my question! :)
Final question: Is it better to rent the car at Malaga Airport or in the city? If we rent at the airport, we’d need a hotel with parking, which doesn’t seem easy. Or stay outside the city and park for free near the center if possible? I’ve read comments about taking a taxi to Malaga and then picking up the rental car at the airport the next morning. The taxi would really need to be affordable...

My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September 2026.
We’ll be flying from Montreal to London, where we’ll spend three nights.
After that, we’ll head to Dublin for a few days and take trains to visit the main attractions.
Our ideal plan would be to choose hotels near train stations and take tours to the interesting spots.
Would 8 days in Ireland be enough for this kind of trip?
