Nous partons à deux pour 3 semaines sur place en Malaisie avec arrivée et départ depuis KL...et nous sommes en train de planifier notre itinéraire de vacances (un peu à la bourre je sais 😉)
L'idée générale, c'est de faire des vacances qui nous permettent à la fois de:
- découvrir la culture du pays, sa cuisine, la vie des malaisiens
- découvrir sa nature (trek/flore/faune)
- profiter des plages
Avec l'expérience de mes précédents voyages, je voulais éviter de vouloir "tout faire" et donc me consacrer à la partie péninsulaire de la Malaisie. Mais, à force de lire VF, j'en viens à me dire que ne pas passer par Bornéo serait presque criminel :)
Voilà pour l'instant ce que je ne voulais pas manquer de mon voyage:
* KL (~3jours)
* Cameron Highlands (~2 jr)
* Une île de la côte Nord-Est pour le snorkeling (Perenthian? , Redang?) (~3/4 jr)
* Une (ou plusieurs) île de l'archipel Seribuat pour profiter de la plage dans un lieu moins touristique (Rawa? Sibu?) (~3 jr)
* Au choix, et pour découvrir le pays: Malacca, Kuala Selangor, Penang/Georgetown. Le choix des villes se fera en fonction de l'itinéraire choisi
* Singapour (~3 jours)
Premières questions:
- Compte tenu de la période (Mi-Sept --> début Octobre), le choix de ces îles est-il le bon?
- Perenthian ou Redang ou autre?
- Quelqu'un a-t-il des conseils pour l'archipel de Seribuat?
Ensuite, j'aurais aimé voir pouvoir faire un trek/observation de la faune/flore...j'allais choisir le Teman Negara (voir le Parc Endau Rompin) mais comme je le disais plus haut, Borneo semble être le must...Vaut-il mieux passer ~3 jours à Teman Negara (ou Endau Rompin) et s'éviter trop de temps à passez en Avion/taxi/bus pour Bornéo ou oublier Teman Negara (et probablement 1 des îles "détentes" citées plus haut) et passer quelques jours (entre 4 jours et 1 semaine environ?) sur Bornéo avec au choix:
- Kuching + Bako + Semmengok
ou
- Trek rivière Kinabatangan
ou
- Sepilog + Labuk Bay
En gros: Taman Negara (ou Endau Rompin) ou Borneo? Si Bornéo, où aller? Borneo a l'air tellement belle , sauvage et authentique qu'elle mérite plusieurs semaines pour elle toute seule...😊 Mais si ça se révèle un peu juste niveau planning (et réservation, car je précise que bien sûr, rien n'a été réservé!), ce sera pour une prochaine fois!

j ai bcp aime kuching pour la multiplicite de trucs a faire faciles d acces avec un voiture ou un scooter de loc(a partir de 25Rm/jour), et surtout pour bako, mais pb pour toi, bako est quasiment TOUJOURS PLEIN, il faut reserver longtemps a l avance, et pour 2 personnes a si courte echeance, c est quasi rape d avance, d autre part, en admettant qu il y ait de la place, l aller retour a bako va te bouffer deux demi journees, non pas que ca ne vaille pas le coup, maislourd pour ta si courte dispo
meme remarque pour la riviere kinabatangan, l aller retour va te bouffer un temps difficilement compatible avec ce que tu as
le meilleur plan pour toit serait a mon sens d aller a sandakan (direct de KL avec air asia http://booking.airasia.com/Search.aspx), direct de l aeroport a labuk bay en taxi, de dormir la bas une nuit ou deux ou trois (moins cher qu a sepilok et bcp plus amusant:

sipadan est regulierement classe dans le top 10 mondial des sites de plongee, il est certainement dans le mien: faune marine exceptionnelle, requins, tortues, bancs de gros poissons, ca grouille de gros trucs et plus encore de merveilles plus petites (coraux, eponges, nudibranches, hippocampes, cnidaires...) La aussi, c est quasi TOUJOURS PLEIN et il faut reserver par internet (voir la pour les contacts: http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/malaysia/malayop.html) a l avance mais si tu te contentes du snorkelling, ca peut passer meme si peu de temps a l avance, un forfait 3 jours avec une journee ilots paradisiaques+snorkeling, mabul snorkeling ou plongee+++, sipadan snorkeling ou plongee+++++++ comblerait sans doute tes reves au niveau plage, flore et faune sous marine.
dommage de passer dans le quartier et de ne pas voir ca, surtout si tu es deja amateur
ca pourrait donner par exemple:
1er soir vol kl-sandakan (il y en a un a 17h50 tous les jours je crois, a verifier), taxi vers labuk bay
j1: 4 feedings a labuk bay plus nuit (eventuellement une journee supplementaire, pour faire chauffer la carte memoire de ton appareil photo, j y suis reste trois jours et j en ai ramene 8000 photos (mode rafale pour la photo animaliere)
j2: sepilok, nuit a sandakan
j3: bus vers semporna
j4-5-6 mabul sipadan+ilots attention le budget est a la hauteur de la qualite de ce que tu vas voir, encore que c etait tellement exceptionnel que j y retournerais volontier
le soir du j6 vol tawau (pas loin de semporna)-KL, dernier vol a 21h35 avec air asia, environ 50 euro/aller simple, kl-sandakan comme tawau-kl, c est moins cher en reservant a l avance mais meme au tarif regulier, ca reste abordable
si tu veux optimiser le temps et economiser une journee, tu peux negocier un transfert taxi prive a sepilok, qui t emmenera dans l apres midi a semporna, pas le meme budget mais tu sembles presse par le temps
si tu degages une journee supplementaire, je la passerais a labuk bay: tu ne vois jamais la meme chose d un feeding a l autre et chacun des trois jours que j y ai passe a recele des merveilles uniques.

pas jouable, le parc n est accessible que par la mer, emmbarcadere a 25km de kuching, pas d hebergement a touriste pres de l embarcadere, et l acces est conditionne par les marees et les conditions de mer, donc pas a n importe quelle heure, et certains jours pas du tout
en gros, si tu te renseignes sur les horaires de maree et que tu prends un taxi depuis kuching (50Rm alors qu il y a un bus a 2Rm depuis lequel tu as tout le temps d admirer le paysage), il te faudra quand meme 3 a 4 heures pour arriver a bako, a l heure dictee par la maree et pas forcement celle qui t arrange, si tu le fais a l aveuglette comme je l ai fait, c etait depart le matin de kuching, et arrivee juste avant la tombee de la nuit, et encore on avait failli ne pas partir, ca remuait pas mal
vraiment pas adapte a qqun qui est presse par le temps comme tu l es, sachant que tu peux aussi reste coince a bako pour les memes raisons, a supposer de toute facon qu il y ait de la place pour 2, ce qui est improbable

oui, il FAUT RESERVER, il y a un numerus closus quotidien de touristes qui vont a sipadan. c est un peu moins cher pour le snorkeling et souvent ils ne veulent te vendre qu un forfait 3 jours avec un seul jour a sipadan, c est ca ou rien, pas degueux quand meme, en general ils commencent par les ilots paradisiaques, puis creshendo a mabul, puis l apotheose a sipadan
quant aux boites de plongee pas super sympa, j ai un pote qui a fait le divemaster la bas, il m en avait dresse un tableau assez glauque, le business est qd meme tres concurenciel et tout le monde est paye au lance pierre, plus d autres joyeusetes trop longues a raconter, ca n aide pas pour l ambiance, ceci dit, c etait tres cool pour moi quand j y suis passe

la ou il restera de la place, pas sur que tu aies vraiment le choix, c est le premier truc que je bookerais a ta place avant d organiser le reste
Merci Renaud, je ne savais pas que ça pouvait prendre autant de temps d'aller au Parc Bako. Je me basais sur le récit d'un ami pour qui tout était allé "smoothly" depuis Kuching, sans attente de bus/bateau et problèmes de marée!
A propos de la plongée à Sipadan/Mabul: ceux qui voudraient plonger sans avoir de certif doivent-ils prendre obligatoirement un forfait "cours de plongée"? Est-il possible de plonger pendant une journée tout en étant complétement débutant (avec un Dive Master bien sûr)? Si on est débutant, ne vaut-il pas mieux faire du snorkelling que de la plongée "débutant" où l'on passera plus de temps à apprendre à plonger plutôt qu'à observer?
Je suis en train de me dire: ça fait beaucoup de temps (trajet Sandakan --> Semporna, ~6h + trajet Semporna --> Tawau) et d'argent (~400 RM la journée de snorkelling à Sipadan, beaucoup moins à Mabul + location du matos et permis + transport et logement) pour 2 jours de snorkelling (même si je sais, c'est un site quasi unique au monde) :( Et il vaudrait peut être mieux remettre cette partie de Bornéo à un autre voyage et se "contenter" des Perenthians par exemple.
Vos avis m'intéressent :) Une fois décidé de ce que je fais (ou pas!) à Bornéo, je pourrai planifier le reste (péninsule) plus simplement.

pas impossible de plonger mais tu seras tres limitee jusqu a validation du niveau de plongee de base (la bas ce sera probablement PADI open water), ce qui prendrait plusieurs jours, ce sont des plongees techniques, a profondeur tres controlee et limitee, pas du tout adaptees a l observation des merveilles de la bas

c est le conseil que je te donnerais, c est moins cher que la plongee bouteille la bas, ce n est deja pas cadeau (mais pas vole a plusieurs titres: sipadan est a 30km de mer de semporna, il faut payer l essence, plus la licence du club, seul moyen d acceder a la zone protegee de sipadan).

j ai quelques dizaines de vols sur air asia, un seul retard de 20 minutes, un avantage sur malaysian airlines: je crois que le prix comprend un bagage soute, alors que c est en supplement sur air asia (pas un pb si comme moi tu voyage leger et que tout passe en bagage cabine, moins de poids a trainer, moins d attente...)

Je suis à Kuching actuellement, avant hier nous nous sommes rendus à Bako, réservation la veille à l'office du tourisme sans problème, nous étions en tout 13 touristes à passer la nuit au parc. Le trec nocturne de 2 hres super à ne pas manquer. Les nasiques à voir dans la mangrove vers 17h (la famille au grand complet s'y retrouve pour le lunch)
De kuching bus rouge à toutes les heures de 7 h à 17 h, 3.5 RM prend 50 minutes incluant plein d'arrêts , le bateau 47 RM à partager entre 5 ou 6 max voyageurs prend 20 min de la jetée du village au parc, même formule qu'un taxi le bateau part à votre demande.
Il faut payer 20 RM le permis au terminal de la jetée. Prévoir un petit en cas la bouffe pas terrible et lampe frontale pour le trek de nuit.
Alors voilà si cela peut vous aider.
Cela vaut vraiment le coup ce parc, c'est la jungle profonde.
tu veux dire que du jour au lendemain, ils avaient 13 places pour dormir une meme nuit???
je crois que vous avez eu de la chamce, ou alors ils ont construit bcp de nouveaux dortoirs tout d un coup
pour le reste, meme excellente experience pour moi (bemol aussi pour la nourriture, mais rien de grave, surtout que tout ce que j ai vu a tres aisement fait passer la pilule)

Non nous étions en tout 13 touristes à rester sur place pour la nuit. Beaucoup de rumeurs que c'était plein mais à l'office du tourisme on m'a dit que c'était faux. Le lendemain beaucoup beaucoup de gens arrivaient mais pour la journée seulement et ils étaient décus en apprenant qu'on les avaient mal informés. Moi aussi tout ce que j'y ai vu compensait amplement la bouffe quel magnifique endroit n'est-ce pas. As-tu fais le treck de nuit ???

Notre voyage à nous est prévu pour Mars 2012, et je change d'avis tous les jours sur l'itinéraire, notamment à propos de Mabul qui va nous prendre du temps et raccourcir notre dernière étape "repos" aux Perhentians... Nous aimons le snorkeling et les animaux mais ne sommes pas non plus des accros des fonds marins, et ne pratiquons pas la plongée, donc quid de cette étape apparemment incontournable...

I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. No app for this one—you just hop on bus #14 at the local terminal (pay cash on board). But where do I catch it, and where’s the stop??

From what I’ve heard, it’s the Sida Express company (great name, right? 😄).
Can’t book online, but apparently, you *have* to because there’s only one bus at 8 AM.
