Hello everyone! So glad to be back on this forum to swap some great tips. I’m heading to Malaysia from mid-May to mid-August 2025 for nearly 3 months. With my advanced certification in hand for a few years now, I’m on the lookout for the best dive spots in Malaysia. I’ve obviously heard about the Perhentians and Sipadan. Someone mentioned Tioman too, but not necessarily for diving. Do you have any feedback on these places for diving? (visibility, marine life diversity, etc.) Any idea about the rates for fun dives? Dive centers you’d recommend? Any help would be super valuable for planning the trip, so thanks a million in advance to those who take the time to reply. Safe travels, everyone!!

Definitely, Perhentian, Redang, Tioman, as well as Sipadan and Mabul in Borneo are amazing dive sites. I visited all these islands in 2005, 2006, and 2008. I'm a freediver but I can go as deep as scuba divers (-40 m) 😎! Back then, it was paradise, but that was a long time ago...

Thanks so much for your reply, Ivert—it’s really cool of you! I’ll keep looking into it, but you’ve convinced me to go diving in Borneo too, so I’m super happy! Fair winds to you!!

Hi there,

I’m also looking for info on good diving spots in Sabah, outside of Sipadan, for June. Over time and with all the diving we’ve done in Asia, we’ve become pretty picky. We used to visit the Perhentians a lot back in the 90s/2000s, but things were starting to change—crowds, new construction everywhere. The dives were still great, though. This time, we can only get away for 15 days, so we want to limit ourselves to two spots max, preferably not too crowded and with great dive sites. Maybe a quick detour to Sipadan as a bonus. I’ve heard of Layang Layang, but the info isn’t clear on how to get there, if there’s still accommodation on-site, or what the prices are like. If anyone has any tips, thanks in advance!

Happy bubbles.

Hey Astrid, Diving in Mabul and also Semporna is truly amazing for the small marine life like colorful nudibranchs of all shapes, as well as cute crabs, shrimp, turtles, and even crocodile fish. On top of the muck diving in Mabul, you can also visit the sea gypsies (Bajau Laut) around Semporna and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park.

Hello,

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner—I didn’t see this message. Bum bum is the big island right across from Semporna. In the end, we didn’t go there due to booking issues; we headed straight to Mabul instead. We found the dives in Sipadan amazing, even though it’s pricey because of the 50 € daily entrance fee for the reserve. It might not be ideal for beginners who aren’t comfortable with currents—it really depends on the person. Other than that, we had some great surprises at Si Amil with a huge school of mobula rays. A few decent spots around Mabul, Kapalai, and Mataking too, but nothing compares to Sipadan. Visibility was generally really good.
