Hi there, We’re planning a trip to Chile this coming August and would love to head down to Chiloé. We’ve heard that as we go further south at this time of year, the weather gets pretty rough. What’s the weather like in Chiloé in late August/early September? What activities can we do? And which ones become really tricky because of the weather? Thanks in advance for your tips! Marie

Hi, I spent 4 or 5 days on Chiloé Island last year, in early December: the weather was really changeable, mostly chilly (max 18°C during the day), a bit of rain, windy, and cold nights (we heated every night—wood stove vibes). So I don’t think August or September is ideal: I just checked the Chilean weather site, and right now it’s max 10–12°C during the day, 3–4°C at night. Up to you! !

Hello,

What’s the weather like in Chiloé in late August/early September? What activities can you do?

On Chiloé Island, it can rain all year round, but especially during June, July, and August. Unless you love the rain, it’s not really the best time to visit.

For reference, here’s a link to a climograph from one of the island’s weather stations: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Climograma-Estacion-Biologica-Senda-Darwin-Chiloe-42-S-Promedios-mensuales-de_fig1_40881243

Which activities become really difficult because of the weather?

Hiking, most definitely.

Otherwise, you can still visit the many small museums, the UNESCO World Heritage churches, and the local gastronomy—absolutely worth trying.

Thierry.
