Weather in central and northern Vietnam in February-March

Hi everyone, The topic has already been discussed, but it was about ten years ago (I haven’t seen any more recent replies). We’re planning to visit Vietnam for the first time from February 21 to March 7, 2025, most likely... We were thinking of exploring the central and northern regions. However, we’ve read a lot of conflicting things about the weather in the North, like Hanoi, at this time of year: “it’s quite nice, around 20-22°C” or “it’s cold, bring socks and a sweater.” But we were hoping to escape winter for a couple of months in a warm place... What do you think—those of you who live there or visit regularly? If it’s better to focus on the Central and Southern regions during these same dates, what shouldn’t we miss? Thanks in advance to the community! Best regards, Bernard

Hi there,

It's tough to give advice about the weather.

It really depends on how long your trip is—you’ll definitely need to target specific spots. I spent 2 weeks in HOI AN in the center in mid-February this year. I didn’t get any rain, and it wasn’t too hot—it was really pleasant. I’d just come from Cambodia where I’d been suffering through the intense heat. But I know that at the beginning of February, they had some rain.

In the south, you’ll have great weather.

I’m heading back this year in February and March: HOI AN - SAIGON - HOI AN - HANOI.

I think it’s best to visit HANOI toward the end of your trip when the weather will be nicer.

Hi Bernard, we go to Southeast Asia almost every year from February to April. In 2023, we were in Vietnam in early March: - Cat Ba: a bit chilly, no swimming - Hanoi: fine for the city - Tam Coc: okay but no pool - Hoi An: quite beautiful, but bad weather for the Cham Islands and the famous Da Nang park (Bana Hills) completely in the fog. But in 2023, winter dragged on a bit. In 2024, we arrived in Vietnam in early April: - Cat Ba: swimming possible - Hanoi: quite hot - Hoi An: very good.

The thing is, the weather changes at the end of February. You probably won’t be cold, but swimming might be limited except in Hoi An. You’re going to love northern Vietnam. Have a great trip! André

Hi, We were there from 03/27 to 04/12/2023. In Hanoi, 6 days of mild and gray weather, same for the terrestrial Ha Long Bay. In Hue, it was nice but very hot in the afternoons (40°C). In Hoi An, hot and sunny. We’re going back in January 2025.

Happy travels!

Hi, didn’t you think of searching online by typing "Vietnam climate February March"?

You’ll get general climate trends, whereas one person’s experience isn’t the same as another’s.

Keep in mind, the country stretches a long way from north to south, so there are three climate zones.

Hi there,

True, there’s no shortage of sites like “when to go?” online.

Like this one, for example: https://www.partir.com/Viet-nam/quand-partir.html

It’s impossible to predict the weather that far in advance. As for the climate—the usual seasonal trends—northern Vietnam isn’t recommended in February: overcast skies, gray weather, fog in the mountains, and guaranteed disappointment. Halong Bay and the rice fields might look a bit dreary this time of year.

In February, you’re better off sticking to the south and central regions.

Hi there, Thanks for your input! Of course, I’ve checked the websites you mentioned, but I’d rather hear from people who live there or have been recently. Over the years, that’s always been more helpful to me.

What do you recommend visiting in the south and central regions?

Hi there,

I’m not familiar with central Vietnam. In the south, though, I’d especially recommend the Mekong Delta.

It can get cold in the North in January and especially February, particularly in the mountains, but nothing unbearable. Just bring some warm clothes. The Center is fine and the South is perfect

since you mentioned wanting to spend 2 months in warm weather, you should definitely forget about the north.

Thanks everyone! We’ve made our decision. We’ll head to the South and then move up toward the center the first week of March. What shouldn’t we miss in these two areas?

In the South, visit Saigon (opera, stunning Art Deco Post Office, the central market in Chinatown) and Cantho, with the Cai Rang floating market and the Noodle Village right next door.

The North is breathtaking. I’ve got 10 pages of notes—too much for this post—so give me your email address and I’ll send them to you along with the ones on the Central region.
