Where to travel in October worldwide based on weather

Hi everyone,

This question probably comes up pretty often, but my little family and I are planning to travel from October 17th to November 5th and we haven’t settled on a destination yet.

We’re mainly looking for discovery, a change of scenery, beautiful landscapes, and great hikes—so not necessarily by the sea—but with warm weather and not too much rain.

We haven’t decided on a destination yet, but we’d like to go somewhere "affordable," since we’re also hoping to take another two-week trip in December, so we’d like to keep the budget in check.

Since we’ve already been to Thailand, Indonesia (Java, Lombok, Bali), Mexico (Yucatan), Costa Rica, and Jordan, we’re really keen to keep exploring Asia, but the season doesn’t seem ideal. I know it’s all relative, and there must be some exceptions.

So, broadly speaking, we’re considering:

- **Asia**: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Sri Lanka - **South America**: Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia. We’re saving the colder countries for a future trip (Argentina, Chile, Bolivia) - **Africa**: The required budgets seem higher for the countries we’re interested in (Namibia, Tanzania). We’ll save that for later. - **Central America**: Guatemala, Mexico.

Even though weather isn’t an exact science, which countries would be the best fit for our travel period with pleasant weather and a low cost of living?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

The question is too general since even within the same country, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region— especially in large countries, or in places like Thailand or Vietnam that stretch over 2,000 km. It’s even more true for all regions affected by monsoons (alternating west/east monsoons), which means when it’s nice on one side, it’s bad on the other. And in winter, it can snow in the north while it’s very hot in the south.

Anyway, for some of the countries mentioned, I’d say the climate probably isn’t the first concern— likely the cost of flight tickets first, and then health and safety conditions for a family trip (especially with young kids??).

If you don’t have much experience traveling with kids as a family, then out of all the countries listed (and I’ve been to quite a few), for a family trip, the one that immediately comes to mind is Thailand! (But choose the right regions with favorable weather in late October.)

And once you’ve been to Thailand 2 or 3 times, then consider other Asian countries—

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Our main criteria would be to have pleasant weather suitable for outdoor visits.

Since we have time off in October and December, we’d like to travel far during both periods, which is why we’d prefer to spread our budget rather than spend it all on one annual trip.

We travel with our 12-year-old child, who’s used to walking long distances with us since she was little, so we don’t hold back on that. If we can go somewhere, she can too. We also try to assess potential risks without being overly anxious (we check the government travel site), but the main limiting factor is the "cost of the trip"...

Our trip to Thailand, where we discovered places like Erawan Falls, amazing jungle sites in Khao Sok National Park and its Ratchaprapha Lake—aside from the small islands in the Andaman Sea—and the incredible hospitality of the Thai people definitely made us want to return to explore the north of the country someday.

Our discovery of a few Indonesian islands (Bali, Lombok, Java) gave us another perspective on Southeast Asia and a real love for Java, with its temples and volcanoes...

We travel with a thirst for surprise and discovery, often choosing our destinations less than a month before departure—like our exploration of Mayan sites in Mexico, Costa Rica with its lush landscapes, or more recently, places like Petra (with over 35 km of walking in two days) or a two-night stargazing experience in the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan.

So, we try to pick a different country each time to soak up its atmosphere, experience something new, and immerse ourselves in a different culture. But to really enjoy it, it’s best not to have 20 days of rain. Even though weather isn’t an exact science and everything’s unpredictable these days, we try to choose based on informed advice (like avoiding cyclone season).

Even if countries like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, or the Philippines are high on our list, if the weather isn’t ideal, we can explore other options. That’s why we’re asking for recommendations on what might be feasible this time of year.

If the countries mentioned aren’t doable, we’re also considering:

- Northern India (the south is unfortunately suffering from terrible floods—our thoughts go out to the residents) - China (seems to have amazing national parks, but the cost of park access plus visa fees at 126 € could significantly increase the budget, despite cheap flights) - Myanmar (are budget hotels still hard to book without reservations?)

Flights to South America are more expensive, but if a "deal" comes up, would a region in Argentina, Ecuador, or Brazil be worth considering?

Thanks again, and sorry for the "novel"!

Hello,

We’d also like to travel in October and are looking for a destination with similar conditions to what you’re asking for. Could you confirm your choice for that time of year, keeping in mind that the monsoon is still ongoing in Southeast Asia?

Thanks!
