Poutine, souvenirs, and must-see spots in Quebec City?

Hi everyone! We’re nearing the end of our trip and have 3 nights in Quebec City. What are your must-try spots for a good poutine? Our previous attempts haven’t gone well, and where’s the best place to buy souvenirs that actually scream "Quebec"? Also, what are your top picks for sights and walks? We’re thinking Old Quebec, Lévis, and Montmorency Falls. We’ll be there for 3 nights but only have 2 full days. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hi,

Even though I’m not from Quebec City, I’ll try to answer to help you out (I lived in Lévis for a few years).F609

Here are my personal favorites. Since everyone has their own tastes, you’ll probably get some different opinions: Terrasse Dufferin, Walking on the Plains of Abraham, Visiting the Parliament Building of Quebec, Passing through Porte Saint-Louis and visiting the Citadelle, Visiting Place Royale, Grabbing a coffee on Rue Cartier, not too far from the Plains, Visiting the Musée national des beaux-arts de Québec, Walking through Parc du Bois-de-Coulonge, And My favorite F496 Taking the ferry to Lévis in the evening to enjoy the view of Quebec City. Make sure to stop by Microbrasserie Le Corsaire for a bite. Climb the red stairs to digest and snap a few photos. Enjoy or wander around the Quai before heading back. If possible, time it with a fireworks show (it’s way nicer to watch from Lévis).

For poutine, avoid Ashton at all costs. 😉 Go for a place like Poutineville instead. I’d recommend the one in Saint-Roch—also for the neighborhood’s vibe. F609

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Have a great stay! F602

Hey, You’ll see that touristy Quebec City can be visited pretty quickly—Upper Town (Terrasse Dufferin, etc.) and Lower Town (the pedestrian district of Petit Champlain). In Lower Town, make sure you don’t miss Rue Sous-le-Cap, which will really *plunge* you into New France.... I second Bauhaus’s suggestion to take the ferry at the end of the day to admire the sunset over the Château Frontenac and Upper Town! Of course, you’ve gotta stop by Montmorency Falls (access from the top to avoid the paid parking). If you haven’t already, a little detour to Île d’Orléans could be nice!

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Great suggestion to take a "boat tour"; the Quebec City–Lévis crossing will especially help you understand and visualize the historical choice of location for defending the city.

I’ll add: if it’s raining, take a guided tour of the Château Frontenac.

I’ll retract: don’t waste your time chasing down poutine—greasy fries and synthetic cheese in the middle of a thick, greasy, brown liquid. It’s disgusting!... Otherwise, make sure to grab some liquid antacid beforehand!"

Hello everyone, Just a quick note. This is a request from the author of the post asking for an address where they can eat poutine 😋😍. Cheers 👋

Hey there! 😊

So, how did the end of your trip go? Did you find a good restaurant for your poutine? 😁

What kind of souvenirs did you bring back?

Looking forward to hearing how your trip ended and what you enjoyed. It could help us with recommendations next time! 😊👍

Cheers! 👋

So we went to a snack bar "Chez Gaston"; my son really wanted to try poutine again—our first attempt wasn’t great... honestly, poutine isn’t that interesting in my opinion! We ate some amazing lobster and crab sandwiches in Les Escoumins, bought some delicious canned goods at Atkins, and had lobster at La Maison du Pêcheur in Percé... all in all, poutine was just okay.

As for souvenirs, I saw a little stone bear statue in a shop in Montreal that I didn’t buy, thinking I’d find another one—well, I never did. So I ended up bringing back some pebbles I collected on the beach (in Sainte-Anne), maple syrup, and nothing else... I really wanted to avoid anything made in China. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. ❤️

It’s a great idea to bring back pebbles as a souvenir. 👍

True, there aren’t many commercial souvenirs that *aren’t* made in China. 😅

Hope you enjoyed your stay in la belle province and that you won’t hesitate to come back. Cheers! 👋👋

It was a really beautiful trip. Back in France, I live in a region of mountains and lakes too—the Jura. But everything is so much bigger where you are! I had several favorites, but I think the Mauricie was an incredible stop. And flying over it in a seaplane was magical! The northern gannet colony in Bonaventure was also a highlight, and seeing the blue whale was extraordinary—even though I’d already seen whales in Costa Rica! In short, 22 extraordinary days. I regret ending my trip in Quebec City, though. It was hot, and after all that nature, finishing in a bustling city wasn’t my favorite, even though it’s a beautiful city! We’ll definitely be back—next time in the fall.

That’s awesome! 👍 We’ll find other traditional dishes for you to try. I mean, something other than poutine. Maybe a piece of Pudding chômeur? 😁😆 I also wish you a wonderful festival of colors for your next visit! 🌸🍁 Cheers! 👋👋

Hey, Poutine isn't the only culinary "specialty" of Quebec, but it's the one that "crosses" borders (at the expense of blueberry pies or Lac-Saint-Jean meat pies...). But hey, you had to try it!! Personally, I agree with you. Glad you got to enjoy the Gaspesian delights—Atkins was worth the detour, wasn’t it? 😉 (Especially since it’s not really a detour when you’re doing the Gaspésie loop!) As for souvenirs, you’ve brought back plenty in the form of encounters, landscapes seen, etc.... and those are the best kinds of souvenirs (not made in China and don’t collect dust on a shelf ). Have a great end to your stay (or safe travels home if your trip’s already over)
