Hi
What’s your experience of Prague in winter like? Weather, vibe, etc.
Thanks so much

Freezing... (Closer to -15 than to zero)
Still quite a few people around (holiday season)

For the temperature, it should be just as cold.
However, the crowds should drop.

Honestly, it’ll be cold, but Prague has something special in winter. The best part is if it snows—it’ll be absolutely gorgeous.

Hi Alain,
I don’t really understand why so many people warn you about a freezing visit—it *can* get cold, but it’s pretty rare. In December or February, you’re more likely to encounter light nighttime frosts and slightly above-freezing daytime temps. As for the vibe, Prague is always packed with people, no matter the season.
Have a great trip!
Michel

Maybe because they’ve been through them...

Hi Agnes,
I’ve spent many winters—late December or February—in several Central European countries. I remember really snowy and cold weather once in Poland in February, minus 15, once in Bucharest nearly 20 years ago, and once in Chisinau. For the rest, it was just typical winter chill, nothing more or less.
My curiosity led me to check the temperatures in Prague on December 25 and, randomly, February 4. December 25 / February 4 2022: low 3 °C, high 10 °C / low 3 °C, high 6 °C 2023: low 3 °C, high 9 °C / low -2 °C, high 4 °C 2024: low 0 °C, high 5 °C / low 6 °C, high 9 °C
But of course, it *can* drop to minus 15 °C—it’s possible. Minus 12 too! 🙂

hi,
But of course it can get down to minus 15; it's possible.
Yeah, but it's pretty rare these days—I’d say it's exceptional. Prague isn’t Moscow!

2009: -15 🙂
It’s been worse...
After that, I’d rather have -15 with sunshine than 12 with rain. And if I were visiting Kraków in December, I’d be really disappointed if it were just chilly.
The important thing is to pack the right wardrobe.

Prague in winter is a beautiful destination! The weather isn’t an obstacle (in recent years, temperatures range between 0 and 6 degrees), and the atmosphere is festive thanks to all the Christmas lights and events (https://visiterprague.fr/visiter/marches-noel-prague/).
There are tons of fun activities to discover (ice skating, concerts, shows, cruises, etc.), and visiting the historic monuments and the city’s architecture remains magical 🙂 (https://visiterprague.fr/top-10/top-10-faire-prague-en-hiver/).
Good evening,
I was in Prague in 2007 for New Year’s Eve. It was really cold despite the many layers of clothes—like 0°C in the morning, 1°C in the afternoon... And by 4:30 PM, it was pitch black outside 😵 Still, some lovely memories, like the fireworks over Charles Bridge!!!
