For my part, I start checking search engines 6 months in advance, but I only book directly on the selected airline's website.

Yes, no problem.

Is it easy to get around Laos using public transportation?

There is a railway line (Chinese) between Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Otherwise, many van companies (shared or private) cover the main routes.

Do we need to book accommodation in advance?

There are plenty of options everywhere, so if the location where you sleep isn’t a priority, you’ll always find something.

Can you go hiking without a guide?

It depends on the area. In the north of the country, you can do day trips without a guide. For multi-day hikes, a guide is preferable.

There’s a (Chinese) railway line between Luang Prabang and Vientiane.

It also goes beyond Luang Prabang, serving places like Nateuy, which is a gateway to Luang Nam Tha.
