Je suis photographe et je viens de découvrir ce forum sur lequel j'ai pu apprécier la qualité des écrits et des images postées. Bravo à tous ceux qui prendront le temps de me lire pour toutes ces aventures que vous relatez souvent avec une fort belle plume, beaucoup d'humour et de non moins jolies images. C'est également une précieuse mine d'informations que je consulte assidument pour programmer mon prochain voyage aux états-unis.
Je me permets justement d'écrire ce message car je suis en train de planifier mon prochain voyage dans le southwest et je souhaiterais faire appel à votre expérience de cette magnifique région. Mon principal souci étant de parvenir à déterminer la période la plus adéquate pour entreprendre ce voyage.
Je me suis déjà rendu dans cette région (principalement Arizona et Utah) en 2012 au mois de Juin. Les conditions météo avaient été très clémentes avec un temps ensoleillé sur la quasi totalité du parcours et des températures très chaudes la plupart du temps. Toutefois, j’ai regretté d’un strict point de vue photographique, l’absence presque permanente de nuages dans le ciel d’un bleu « électrique » presque surnaturel pour qui est plus habitué au climat du nord de la France
C’est, semble t-il, assez caractéristique des conditions météorologiques du début de l’été. S’il me fallait décaler, je souhaiterais éviter le mois de Juillet, trop chaud, et je me suis laissé dire que les mois d’août et de septembre étaient trop instables avec des risques d’orage parfois violents qui pouvaient rendre certaines excursions (en particulier dans les slots canyons) trop périlleuses. Or je compte particulièrement randonner dans Bucksin Gulch (si je parviens à obtenir le permis), la zone des Needles à Canyonlands et de nombreux autres slots canyons au cours de mon voyage (notamment du côté d'Escalante).
Du coup, je me demandais si programmer ce voyage au mois d’octobre pouvait être plus sage et j’aurais souhaité recueillir votre opinion sur ce point précis. Le problème est vraiment de trouver la période qui me permettrait de concilier au mieux météo et intérêt photographique. Bref, de bénéficier de conditions climatiques suffisamment favorables pour permettre les excursions en slot canyon mais aussi la navigation sur pistes pour accéder à des sites tels que Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah ou Bisti Badlands (cette année, je sacrifie la Californie au profit du Nouveau Mexique que j'avais totalement délaissé il y a quatre ans) et d’avoir dans le même temps des ciels un peu plus « photogéniques ».
En outre, j’ai loué, lors de mon dernier séjour, une voiture de tourisme classique, et je savais qu’avec un tel véhicule l’accès à certains sites serait très difficile voir impossible. Cette année, j'ai décidé d'opter pour un véhicule plus musclé et surtout plus adapté aux parcours "hors des sentiers battus" dans le wilderness mais j'ai lu ça et là dans plusieurs comptes rendus de voyages qu'il était souvent difficile de louer un véhicule "sérieux" du type 4WD ou AWD. Auriez vous quelques recommandations ou conseils à ce sujet ?

Pour avoir été dans le Southwest plusieurs fois dans la deuxième quinzaine d'octobre, je peux te dire que c'est une excellente période.
La luminosité est bonne toute la journée (lumière pas trop crue au contraire de l'été quand le soleil est au zénith), les températures sont clémentes (bien sur tout dépend de l'endroit, l'ouest est vaste ! Mais peu de risque de coup de froid ! Il fait même parfois encore chaud dans certains déserts pendant la journée).
Le risque de pluie est faible ! En 3 fois deux semaines et 1 fois 3 semaines, je n'ai jamais été embêté par la pluie. Juste quelques gouttes parfois ne durant pas toute une journée.
Le seul point embêtant : selon la pluviosité des mois d'août et septembre, certaines pistes, si pas encore refaites, peuvent être délicates à emprunter ...

J'avais entendu dire en effet que le mois d'octobre était une période particulièrement propice aux belles lumières. Ma seule inquiétude est la pluie et c'est vrai que lorsque l'on consulte des sites comme usclimatdata, on peut prendre peur. Octobre y est mentionné comme le mois le plus pluvieux dans les régions de Page et Moab par exemple. A contrario, j'ai pu recueillir d'autres témoignages qui, comme le tien, ne mentionnent pas de problème particulier.
Concernant l'état des pistes, c'est vrai que c'est encore un autre problème. En même temps, je n'envisage pas non plus de me rendre sur des sites tels que White pocket ou coyote buttes sud par mes propres moyens. Pour y être déjà allé avec un outfitter, je sais que même avec un véhicule adapté, je ne serais absolument pas capable d'y accéder...mes compétences de pilotage ne suffiraient pas. En revanche, pour avoir étudier les pistes sillonnant la région au sud de Farmington pour les bisti/De-Na-Zin wilderness areas et Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah ou même dans le Nevada, pour la piste menant à Little Finland, je pense que ce doit être dans mes cordes...elles n'ont pas l'air si impraticables que cela.
Oui, c'est une bonne précaution en effet car les journées doivent certainement commencer à bien raccourcir :-) En même temps, je me souviens qu'en Juin, les températures sont tellement hautes parfois que je passais le milieu de l'après midi à l'ombre en attendant que la chaleur baisse un peu et que les lumières deviennent moins zénithales.
Les pistes pour Bisti / De Na Zin / Ah Shi Sle Pah .... sont en bon état sauf pluie en cours ! Dans ce cas cela devient de la boue bien collante et il faut éviter d'y rouler sous peine d'être embourbé !

Pour Little Finland, C'est surtout la partie finale sur Mud washington Road et l'incursion dans le wash que j'appréhende un peu mais au pire, je me dis que je garerais la voiture et que je terminerais à pieds.

Au sujet de la voiture : voilà plusieurs années que je loue un pickup prémium (c'est un 4 portes)à Las Vegas chez Alamo ( ils ont du stock) afin d'être sure à 95% d'avoir un 4x4 avec une bonne garde au sol et aussi une vraie roue de secours. J'ai acheté en + un kit crevaison et un compresseur chez Walmart.
La plate forme arrière me permet de dormir à la belle étoile sur les sites ( White Pocket, Alstrom Point, Cathédral Valley ...etc). Et être en hauteur sur une surface plate quelquefois le pied photo apprécie. Mais pour cela maxi 2 personnes : sur les sièges arrières rabattus, glacière, bagages et le matos.
ça consomme + mais tu te rattrapes sur les nuits d'hôtel.
Pour les prix : en 2015, LAS, 28 jours de loc en juin 1100 euros en passant par drive usa.de. chez Alamo , j'ai eu un Toyota Tundra SR5 .
en 2016, LAS, 28 jours de loc en juin directe Alamo.com ( je me suis inscrit " Alamo Insider") Bingo pour le prix 850 dollars !!!!!!! Dodge Ram 1500
et pour juin 2017, Denver, 28 jours, 1100 dollars. Alamo.
ATTENTION : je loue sans prendre les assurances du loueur. Je passe par : insurance4carhire.com
Il faut surveiller tous les jours les sites Alamo et Enterprise, ça passe de + 400 a moins 400 dollars en une semaine.

Le sujet du climat dans le southwest est une question très délicate, encore plus ces derniers temps où on constate quasiment chaque année que question météo, tout change très vite ...
Pour ce qui est des ciels bien bleus avec de superbes nuages blancs, c'est l'été qu'il faut viser : août-septembre me semblent alors parfaits. Mais qui dit nuages, dit risques d'orages. Cela donne généralement des superbes photos, mais pose pas mal de problème pour les pistes, les slot canyons ...
Tu explique que ton séjour sera très axé sur les slots canyons. Pour moi, le mois d'octobre, juste après les pluies torrentielles d'août et septembre, n'est pas le plus adapté. Les risques de rencontrer des slot partiellement ou totalement en eau sont importants. Pour ce type de canyon, je pense que le printemps est le meilleur moment.

Tu as cerné mon problème.
Mon programme se partage pour l'essentiel entre slot canyons (bucksin gulch, little white horse canyon and bell canyon, pick a boo canyon, waterholes canyon à Page) et exploration de zones plus ouvertes mais à l'accès modérémet compliqué telles que Little Finland, Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah ou Bisti Badlands...du coup, pas évident !
Je vais encore un peu compliquer ton problème en rajoutant une possibilité que tu n'as pas évoquée : l'hiver.
Nous avons fait deux voyages à cette période (fin décembre - début janvier / voir ici pour celui de 2015) et nous avons trouvé beaucoup d'avantages à cette période (certains spécifiques aux photographes), même s'il y a quelques inconvénients. Tout est ici !

Je vais aller regarder ça plus attentivement. Mais c'est vrai que l'hiver donne drôlement envie de randonner dans ces régions et ces reliefs hors du commun.

I’ve planned a three-week itinerary for this summer, from August 9 to 27, in Sri Lanka:
Negombo – 1 night
Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle – 4 nights
Kandy – 2 nights
Ella – 3 nights
Tangalle – 6 nights
Colombo Airport – 1 night
I know this isn’t the ideal time for the south since the beach conditions aren’t great, but we’ve booked a hotel with a pool and won’t be swimming in the sea. We want to relax after all the travel since we’re bringing our two kids, aged 6 and 8.
I know the east would be better, but (i) I’m struggling to find suitable accommodation, and (ii) it adds a lot of travel time, and my kids can only handle about 3 hours at a stretch.
I looked into Arugam Bay, but it’s a 7-hour trip back to Colombo from there.
I’ve checked every weather site imaginable, but they don’t all agree. Do you think we’ll spend our whole trip in the rain, or is the monsoon in the south mostly limited to the sea, as I’ve read?
I’m worried about ending up in the middle of a natural disaster with my two young kids, given recent events.

This year, 2026, I can only get away in April and May. I never travel during these months usually, and from what I know, they aren’t the best for India. But in such a big country, there are always spots that are better than others weather-wise.

We’re more drawn to the Andes, exploring colonial cities, typical villages, markets, and a bit of the coast. We’ve already gotten a taste of this in Bolivia, Colombia, and Chile. Plus, we’d love to do part of it by car since we’re used to driving at our own pace and stopping whenever we feel like it. Anyway, time’s running out, and I need to decide so I can finalize a route and book the tickets!!

I’ve planned a trip to Asia for the first half of November.
I’ll arrive in Singapore at the start of November for about 3 days, and I’ll leave from Bangkok in mid-November.

Just giving you the quick context: A group of friends and I are planning a trip to South Korea (Seoul/Busan) at the end of June/July next year. It falls right in the middle of the monsoon season, but we don’t really have other availability options.😕
I’d love to hear from people who’ve visited the country and these cities during this period—basically, is it not as bad as it sounds, or should we just cancel our tickets (we don’t mind the heat, it’s mostly the rain that scares us).
I know there are plenty of indoor activities, but do you think we’ll still manage to get a few sunny days, or will it be torrential rain for our entire 2-week trip?
The only other country we’ve visited during the rainy season is Brazil (in the northeast) around the same time, and honestly, aside from a few really annoying downpours, we had sunshine most of the time and it was awesome. That said, the climate is totally different, so I’m not sure how relevant the comparison is.

Not sure if guidebooks, agencies, and other tour operators are keeping up by changing their visiting hours and offerings.
Personally, I see a promising opportunity here—jumping on this adaptation to extreme climates before others do, since they’re inevitably coming.
From my own travel experience, I’ve met a few guides so far who are starting to adjust, like in Egypt, Kenya, Senegal, and elsewhere.
They avoid crowds and the hottest hours by starting their tours around 6–7 AM, when it’s cooler.
Yeah, you’ve gotta wake up early, but the payoff is so worth it. 😴
If you’ve got any great tips like this, why not discuss them in this thread and share addresses or websites where the people in charge have realized climate change is real and are adapting? 😊

Hello, We’re heading to Finnish Lapland near Rovaniemi as a family at the end of February with two kids (8 and 14 years old). We’ve got direct flights with Luxairstours. The itinerary is already set, but I’m wondering if anyone has traveled with Luxair before and knows exactly what kind of clothes they provide on the second day? The agency just told me it’s a heavy-duty cold-weather suit. I’m thinking we should get Sorel Caribou boots, maybe second-hand. Here’s what I’ve already planned:
- Thermolactyl leggings and tights from Damart for the whole family as a base layer.
- A first layer of Damart socks + Nordic Stocks socks in 70% merino wool for all four of us.
- Loose fleece layers, including some Polartec.
- Ski pants for hikes.
- For my son and me, a The North Face Himalayan down parka with a hood.
- A ski parka for my husband and my 14-year-old daughter (she *really* wants a Roxy one—I hope it’ll be warm enough).
- For myself, for the flight and the first day at Santa’s village, I’ve packed The North Face winter hiking pants, a long-sleeve merino wool top from Decathlon (thin), a fleece, and my big parka.
I’m wondering if I should just pack fleece joggers or sweatpants for the kids and my husband, at least for the first and last days, to be comfortable on the plane?
I’m also planning to buy balaclavas and neck warmers in addition to our beanies, as well as mittens for all of us. I really need advice because I have no idea—I’ve never been skiing! Also, for a 4-night, 5-day trip, should I pack a second set of base layers, like from Odlo?
Of course, I’ll be leaving cotton clothes out of the suitcase.
As you can tell, I’m someone who gets cold easily—especially my feet, hands, and ears—so that’s my biggest worry. I *don’t* want to be cold, even at -20°C during dog sledding, snowmobiling, or aurora hunting when we might be standing still. We won’t be in the city, and the kids will likely spend most of their time outside, as they usually do.
