Hi, I’m looking for recent opinions on where to stay: Ella or Haputale. Doesn’t Haputale also have the added advantage of the train? Thanks for your input!

Hi there, My opinion isn't very impartial! I've seen how these two villages have evolved over the last 20 years, and now I avoid what Ella has become. The difference between the two villages is simple: Ella is made for tourists and no longer has much to do with a Sri Lankan village. It's become "the place to be" in the mountains. The evening train brings in a thousand tourists during the season who come to "do" Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, and Nine Arch Bridge before leaving. There are plenty of accommodations at all price points. Personally, I used to really like Hilltop Guest House. Haputale is a Tamil village that lives off small businesses where workers from the surrounding tea plantations come to stock up. You won't find a plethora of Western food restaurants, and Ella's competition still protects them. You can find some really nice accommodations and exceptional landscapes that are just as stunning as Ella's. Lipton Seat is popular for the beauty of the valleys crossed by the road leading there. But less frequented and quieter, the walks to Prabah Point and Idalgashina are hidden gems.

Leisure Mount View is an exceptional place to stay for the view, but the price matches it. Personally, I still go to Amarasinghe's—it's simple, but it's been my home base for a quarter of a century. To answer your question, both have a train station.

Haputale is perched on a ridge, and the clouds coming from the east coast cling to it—it gets misty by late morning. It can get chilly in Haputale in the evening, so bring a fleece. You’ll find blankets in the rooms. The best hike would be Stage 13 of the Peakoe Trail: https://thepekoetrail.org/pekoe-stages/stage-13/

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don’t think I’m up for that kind of thing anymore—either age or fitness-wise. But I’ll definitely enjoy the scenery (and the clouds 🙂)
