Hi everyone! I’m heading to Colombia in January 2026 and have a few questions. In Salento, which is better to do—Cocora Valley or Carbonera Valley? After that, I want to fly from Medellín to Rincón del Mar. Is there an airport in Tolú? I can’t find any info. Thanks in advance, and *buen viajé* to all! Kristian

Hey, Tolú airport is reopening on October 25th, but you’ve got the one in Montería (Los Garzones) really close by, which is the airport I use when I go to Colombia and has way more daily flights.

Hi, You can easily get to Cocora on your own from Salento. For Carbonera, you *have* to go through an agency. The Cocora loop takes about 4-5 hours to hike—pretty easy. Apparently, Carbonera involves a 16 km descent after a 1.5-hour drive.

Hi there, I live in Quindío and I’m adding some details for anyone who stumbles on this thread.

Cocora: easy to do on your own. The Willys (local jeeps) leave from Salento’s main square all day and take about 20 minutes. Head out early, before 8 AM, to see the palm trees without the crowds or clouds. The full loop takes 5–6 hours, otherwise the palms are just a 1-hour walk from the entrance.

Carbonera: you don’t strictly need a tour agency, but you’ll need a 4x4 or Willys driver—the road is long (1.5–2 hours) and tough for rental cars. It’s the largest wax palm forest, with very few tourists, and the hike is mostly downhill.

How to choose: Cocora if you’ve got half a day and want to stay flexible, Carbonera if you’ve got a full day and are looking for a wilder vibe. With 3 days in the area, you can easily do both, saving one day for Filandia and a coffee farm.

Happy travels everyone!
