In June 2020, my wife and I will be visiting Brittany and Normandy. We’d especially love to explore villages that aren’t part of the usual tourist routes. We enjoy traveling off the beaten path.

We’re reaching out to you all to share which villages we should check out in these two regions. Thanks.

What a fun question! What do you mean by "village"? In France, some communes have fewer than 100 inhabitants. You could say 99% of them aren’t particularly interesting. Plus, we’re fans of old stone buildings and pretty sites—many monuments are listed as having historical interest. There are labels like "Petites Cités de Caractère" or "Plus Beaux Villages de France." It’d help if you shared the names you’ve already spotted so we can add to your list. The ones in tourist guides are usually the prettiest, but here and there, you’ll find hamlets with lovely thatched cottages, a striking calvary, standing stone houses, or a chapel worth a quick look.

Give us a rough sketch of your itinerary and your interests, and you’ll be flooded with suggestions!

Hello, In Normandy, the most interesting villages aren’t always the ones with a label. The charm often comes from the whole picture: landscapes, roads, architectural harmony. The Pays d’Auge and certain areas of La Manche are particularly rich in this regard, especially if you take the time to explore the back roads. Personally, I’ve found that the inland areas often hold more surprises than the heavily visited spots. If you're looking for a specific vibe (super quiet, seaside, stone villages, etc.), that can help guide your choices.
