Je suis super excitée à l'idée d'y aller et d'y vivre, mais j ai quelques appréhensions sur la violence là bas. J'ai pu lire que c est pas très safe autour de l université. Est ce que c'est envisageable d habiter dans des quartiers sympas et pouvoir se rendre au travail sans risques? Si vous avez des tuyaux, ce serait sympa ;)

J'ai passé 1 an à Philadelphie il y a plus de 30 ans et ai pris à l'époque quelques cours justement à Temple University, car pas chers et façon de rencontrer des gens de mon âge car je débarquais et ne connaissais personne et en plus avais un budget très limité. En effet, ce n'est pas un quartier bien reluisant, l'université est (je me rappelle) entourée de ghettos (beaucoup de ces habitants suivent des cours notamment du soir à Temple) mais elle n'est pas loin du centre ville (j'y habitais) et d'accès facile par les transports publics. Toutefois, et ce, dans n'importe quelle grande ville américaine, le soir, mieux vaut éviter de se balader dans la rue et de prendre les transports publics ; si tu n'as pas voiture, soit tu te fais raccompagner soit tu prends un taxi.

Certes, la ville (comme n'importe laquelle) a changé en 30 ans mais visiblement l'auteur du post a pu récolter des infos semblables à celles dont je parle puisque bien sûr les ghettos entourant Temple University demeurent toujours. J'ai vécu 1 an à Philadelphie dans quartier sympa du Centre (je ne me souviens plus du nom de la rue maintenant) et donc je sais qu'il est possible d'y vivre correctement mais l'auteur parle des environs de Temple University - il faudrait rester dans le sujet et non édulcorer.

Mais bon, c'est une réalité américaine et se cacher les yeux ne servirait à rien. Lorsque j'ai habité par la suite à Atlanta et qu'il m'arrivait de prendre le bus, un jour, une femme s'est précipitée sur moi pour me dire de bouger de mon siège car le mec juste derrière moi avait un couteau. Il te faudra donc faire attention et si tu dois te déplacer très tard, te faire raccompagner ou prendre un taxi. Toute fois, je me suis fait agresser une seule fois (je me suis fait arracher mon collier) et c'était en plein jour, à Varsovie, et donc, il n'y a pas qu'aux USA que les choses arrivent...
Néanmoins, il est sûr que les USA sont un pays très violent et donc il faut faire très attention. Là-bas, on recommande de vérifier le siège arrière de sa voiture avant de s'installer au volant, de ne mettre que son initiale de prénom si on est une fille, de laisser la lumière allumée la nuit au rez-de-chaussée... et c'est ainsi.

Alors, North Philly, c'est le ghetto. Le campus est sûr (ils ont une police très efficace mais bon il y a toujours des étudiants qui ne ferment pas à clé et qui s'étonnent qu'on leur pique leur ordinateur portable :p) et il y a des cabines téléphoniques bleues (appels d'urgence), plus un service où on te raccompagne chez toi à pied ou jusqu'à ta voiture (très fréquent aux US.) MAIS tout autour de Temple, ça craint. Ne sors pas ton téléphone portable, si tu portes des bijoux fais en sorte qu'ils soient sous tes vêtements. Le top si tu es jeune et que tu veux te loger, c'est University City, qui fait partie du "Centre" et est le quartier universitaire où se trouve une grande école (Penn) plus diverses écoles/universités/IUT (comme Drexel); attention, comme les étudiants font pas mal la fête, il ne faut pas espérer le calme et la tranquillité, par contre il y a plein de petits restos sympas et c'est très vivant. Plus au nord mais encore loin du ghetto, tu as Fairmount, très sympa, non loin du fleuve, il y a un parc, des musées... assez cher. Manayunk est très sympa si tu es assez jeune sans être étudiante. Ou encore Northern Liberty.
Si tu veux du chic branché, Rittenhouse Square mais j'espère que ton employeur te paye bien :p, ou alors Washington Square West ou Queen Village un peu moins cher.
Demande à ton employeur si le métro passe pas loin ou si tu dois emprunter le parkway et donc utiliser une voiture.
Philly est une ville géniale :) et il est très facile de se rendre à NYC ou DC (2h en train, généralement confortables et rapides, utilisés par des cadres qui ont des RDV d'affaires sur le Eastern Seaboard).
Si tu ne connais pas, cela ne veut pas dire que ça n'existe pas ! J'ai vécu aux USA pendant près de 10 ans, fréquente au quotidien de nombreux Américains. Tout ce que je dis, je l'ai vu au quotidien. De plus, les gens doivent mettre des grilles à leurs fenêtres au rez-de-chaussée.

C'est vrai que beaucoup de coins se sont vraiment améliorés (Hell's Kitchen, Harlem du moins l'ouest à partir de Morningside Heights) mais North Philly, non, hélas. :s La police patrouille sur le campus 24/7 et il faut être "aware of your surroundings" dès qu'on quitte celui-ci. En revanche, on peut habiter les quartiers genre University City ou Mayanunk sans problème. Et je suis d'accord avec toi, sur bien des points, c'est beaucoup plus tranquille qu'en France. En France on ne peut pas laisser sa maison ouverte tout la journée et ne pas avoir à s'inquiéter d'un cambriolage, par exemple...
et sur le campus, on se sent plutot en securite (ils font tout pour aussi)

New York est devenue beaucoup plus sécuritaire par rapport aux années 80, c'est clair!
Par contre, je trouve aussi que dans plusieurs villes américaines, la sécurité est un problème (mais faut pas généraliser non plus, parfois c'est limité à un secteur précis de la ville).
J'habite maintenant au Mexique, et je rencontre de nombreux Américains qui disent s'y sentir plus en sécurité que dans leur ancienne ville 😕
Je pense que cela dépend vraiment des quartiers, villes, etc. de chaque pays et qu'il est dur de généraliser.

Je lis avec un peu d'amusement votre (posting) surtout en ce qui concerne Atlanta ou j'ai vecu pendant 10 ans a Sandy Springs. Je n'ai jamais vu de grilles aux portes de barreaux aux fenetres, j'y etais il y a deux ans et rien n'a change.
Des criminels il y en partout, mais au cout de n'etre pas politiquement correct (Which I do not care to be) les taux de criminalite variant suivant les quartiers et les communautes.

After living for many years in the West (Belgium, Italy, Switzerland),
I’ve decided to return and settle in Cameroon, my home country.
Currently an entrepreneur in real estate and transport, I’m looking for a partner / partners / foundation to collaborate on an agriculture project, as I own 10 hectares of land.
The hectares have remained unused for years due to a lack of financial means, since the project requires what I’d call a considerable investment. As the main stakeholder, I have a minimal contribution to offer.

The project is simple:
1) Grow maize + build a processing plant to produce flour
