Overview of the New Town
Moroccan Casablanca was just a small town of 20,000 inhabitants when the French arrived in 1907. They built a spacious colonial city, laid out with grand boulevards, around the present-day United Nations Square. The new buildings blend European Art Deco and Arabic architecture in what is known as the Moorish style. A relic of the colonial era, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is no longer in use, but its towering silhouette remains one of Casablanca’s landmarks.
