The dictatorship does not rule in Ukraine. 🙂

That’s YOUR take on things, but not Putin’s—he thinks bombing Ukraine is good for Russia (same logic as Trump’s, by the way). Trump even called Zelensky a "dictator" and publicly humiliated him. Remember that?

So, do Trump and others have the right to violate all the rules of international law and human rights?

If we accept that, we’re embracing the law of the jungle—the law of the strongest—and we have to apply it to EVERYONE, not just countries that align with our ideology. There can’t be double standards.

Your argument is steeped in ideology and media "propaganda," ignoring international law and human rights.

Just travel around Europe—in democratic countries, I’ll specify—to see that perspectives on the countries you’re talking about are very different.

Your argument is just as steeped in ideology... An ideology I don’t share, just as you don’t share mine.

We haven’t gotten anywhere, have we?

Your speech is just as ideologically charged...

There’s still a huge difference between you and me: from the moment there are no more rules, no international law, no human rights that matter, I accept that ANY country can launch missiles at another if it’s about its security. There shouldn’t be double standards—just a few countries shouldn’t get to do whatever they want.

Especially since, in today’s global confusion, we no longer really know what a dictator is. The definition keeps changing—just recently, Zelensky was the dictator, so who is it now? Putin or Zelensky? For Trump, it depends on the day...

Nicolás Maduro was a dictator who had to be eliminated, but Trump gets along just fine with Bukele, the president of El Salvador, who’s no better than Maduro (laws to get reelected indefinitely, brutal repression, etc.). For Trump, the definition of a dictator depends on ideology...

It’s also worth noting that the war in Iran is a real humiliation for Europeans since they weren’t consulted or even warned, and now they’re forced to follow along. But hey, it’s a jungle out there—no rules left at all...

You're way off topic and you didn’t get my point...

How about we get back to talking about airports in the Persian Gulf Emirates?

How about we revisit the topic of airports in the Persian Gulf Emirates?

thanks

How about we get back to talking about the airports in the Persian Gulf Emirates?

That’s a great idea.

Not much has changed since the thread went off track 😉. Dubai seems to be running, with quite a few flights to all over, though sometimes there are holding patterns in the sky before landing to avoid drones, and a few diversions to Dubai’s other airport. Doha is at a standstill, and Abu Dhabi has rare flights.

Same goes for Bahrain and Kuwait, where there are few or almost no flights. The situation is extremely complicated for the aviation industry, which can't evacuate people stranded in the Emirates.

But my thoughts are especially with those who are being bombarded 😢

Hi

How far along are you with your booking for March 21st? I saw that Qatar allows refunds for flights up until March 22nd.
Cordialement, Patrick.
ER Erjome Globetrotter ·
Hey Patrick,

Did you see this, please? On Qatar’s website and app, there’s nothing about it.

Thanks.

I’ll let you know tomorrow because I’m gonna try to push it back by 24 or 48 hours if I can 🤔

It won’t change much, and maybe nothing at all! lol Personally, I’d take the money and look for another airline or even change destinations this time. Emirates is selling tickets for 4500 € to fly Dubai/Paris until Saturday—that’s crazy. Prices drop starting Monday to 1500 €, and Air France has economy tickets for 1300 € for Bangkok/Paris, but you still have to go through the embassy to get that price.🤪
Cordialement, Patrick.
ER Erjome Globetrotter ·
In any case, I’m requesting a refund from Qatar Airways. I’ll know tomorrow if I can reschedule an important meet-up since, apparently, leaving on the 19th or 20/3 offers more options. Based on that, I’ll decide whether to head to Australia or South Korea with another airline 😊

Hello,

If I understood your situation correctly, you haven’t left yet. The ticket you bought departs from Barcelona, so it’s within the European Union. Your flight is therefore covered by Regulation 261/2004 of the European Parliament and Council, even though it’s a non-European airline.

As a result, if a flight is canceled, the airline must offer you a choice between: - a refund, or - re-routing "as soon as possible," or - re-routing at a later date if that works better for you.

In the last two cases, there can’t be any extra charge.

Once you’ve made your choice, it’s irreversible.

Hello, It’s mentioned on the airline’s website. For your info, my flight is on March 18th, and I just received an email from Qatar saying my flight is eligible for a refund. You should get that email in the next few days. Françoise
ER Erjome Globetrotter ·
Hi Françoise,

Still haven’t received an email, but I requested a refund as allowed by the 21/3 policy. We’ll see how long it takes 🤷‍♂️

Hi Elviajeroparis,

It was indeed a departure from Barcelona on 21/3, and I’ve requested a refund.

Thanks again for your help in this discussion and generally on VF 😊

Hi Patrick,

Your upcoming trip to Hong Kong gives me the chance to mention that a new law now allows local authorities to demand, under threat of criminal prosecution, the passwords for electronic devices—phones, computers—even during a simple airport layover. It’s hard not to see this as a major risk for travelers, their personal information, banking data, etc. There’s been little coverage in France, but English-language media has been sounding the alarm recently. Here’s an example: https://www.firstpost.com/world/password-or-prison-in-hong-kong-refusing-to-unlock-your-phone-is-now-a-crime-for-china-under-national-security-law-ws-e-13993702.html

PA Patrick91230 Globetrotter ·
Hi Michel, Sure, I’m taking a flight in May to HK. I’ll be arriving from Shenzhen by train, and well, we’ll see how it goes. Anyway, it’s probably random, and given the number of travelers passing through that airport, the chances of being checked are slim. I enter and exit China several times a year, and they’ve never asked for my phone, but HK is a bit of a special case, I guess. 😉
Cordialement, Patrick.

Hi Michel,

Thanks for this info—I’d missed it even though I’m not currently planning to transit through or visit there.

Hi there,

Thanks for the graph. I think the graph is skewed, especially for Emirates, since a large number of 777 passengers are actually flying pure cargo flights from DWC.

I’d say Emirates passenger flights are currently at about 45–50% of their usual capacity.
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
I’ll be arriving from Shenzhen by train,

Hey Patrick, this detail of your trip actually matters a lot. It’s wild, but China is the country with the most high-speed rail lines. And I wouldn’t be surprised if China goes all-in on the new Silk Road routes to connect Europe to the rest of the continent 😊. So this Persian Gulf crisis will just be a bad memory. Too bad for Trump. Imagine being able to travel to China by high-speed train in a few years 😊

Good news—according to the latest updates, a very provisional ceasefire has been agreed upon. Let’s hope it’s a step in the right direction! 🙂

Air France is extending the suspension of its flights to the Middle East until May 3, inclusive.

Hi, Yeah, it’s still really fragile. Iran wants to charge a passage fee in the Strait of Hormuz, payable in Bitcoin. The 14-day ceasefire is already being violated on both sides—if it lasts 14 days, it’ll be a miracle. I’m flying on the 28th with a layover in Saudi Arabia. Hope I make it through.

Hi Patrick, hello from Adelaide! 👋

Hope you're getting through the rough patch 🤕. I admit I haven't followed the news at all for the past 3 weeks, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better 😕

PA Patrick91230 Globetrotter ·
Hey,

It's been 3 weeks already—when are you coming back?

There’s a 2-week truce to negotiate between Iran and the US, but I don’t know if it’ll hold. Iran was supposed to open the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, but still nothing—they even want to charge ships that want to pass. So after dropping sharply yesterday, oil prices are already climbing again. For now, no news from the airline, so it’s all good. Plus, we’re stopping over in Jeddah, so we’re on the right side. To be continued
Cordialement, Patrick.
