Indonesia trip: which islands for a small budget?

Hi everyone! I’m heading to Indonesia in September with 3 friends, and we’re starting to plan our itinerary, but we’re still not sure which islands to prioritize. We love nature, road trips, and want to avoid mass tourism. If you have any tips on less touristy but equally stunning islands, I’d love to hear them! 😊

Also, our budget is pretty tight, so we’re looking for ways to manage money during the trip. What are your tips for saving money while still making the most of the experience? And if you have any tricks for tracking and sharing expenses between us, I’m really interested! We tried Excel, but it’s not always easy to manage.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations and great tips!

Good evening,

islands to prioritize. We love nature, road trips, and want to avoid mass tourism. If you have tips on less touristy islands, (...) save money

Lombok, avoiding the beaches, is less touristy, and from there, Sumbawa isn’t touristy at all. They also have the advantage of being accessible without taking a flight, so it saves money. However, in Sumbawa, you’ll have to return the same way since only one road crosses the island, or fly from Bima to Bali (around 90 €, 1 flight/day with Wings Air).

What are your tips for saving money?

First of all, Indonesia is a budget-friendly country. Use only public transport, avoid flights, eat at local eateries, and stay in simple guesthouses (locally called "losmen")—basically, the usual...

any tips for managing money during the trip.

Exchange the same amount at the same time and place each time, so you won’t have to do complicated math between you for expenses.

Hello,

Tricount is indeed the perfect app for managing shared expenses during a group trip!

However, if you're looking for another tool to set up a preliminary budget for your trip beforehand to see if you'll stay within your limit, I recommend the site tripkygo for planning your itinerary. It calculates the total budget and per-person costs for you.

Have a great trip in this beautiful country I had the chance to visit in 2019 (Bali, Java, and the Gili Islands)!

hi, I agree with Songsam—Indonesia is a pretty budget-friendly destination. Unless you're heading to Bali, which is super touristy and where prices are higher, I guess

Hi! I recommend Java. It’s so much more authentic, budget-friendly, and peaceful than Bali! And for paradise islands, Karimunjawa is amazing......

First off, where are you landing?

If you're on a tight budget and you land in Jakarta, for example, there's no need to fly anywhere else—you can stay on Java and soak it all in with just a little advance planning.

Alternatively, if you take a flight, there’s Lombok, which is less touristy than Bali, and then Sumatra, which is just as budget-friendly.

Everywhere else is off the beaten path except for a few hot spots like Labuan Bajo, Manado, or the Raja Ampat... but getting there will cost you a pretty penny!

I really recommend exploring Java—you’ll be amazed by the nature, beautiful beaches, and the rich culture, plus you’ll have plenty of opportunities to socialize with locals.

There are some touristy spots, but they’re popular for a reason (Yogyakarta and nearby temples, Bromo...), though you can also find alternatives to those places.

And don’t miss the stunning beaches on Karimunjawa or Bawean either!

Hi Manon. Don’t hesitate to come to Sumatra, a very large island with some great spots and a way to avoid mass tourism. Thanks
