I'm also considering a trip to Sri Lanka. I'm surprised to find so few references to Jaffna in the comments. Does that mean this destination isn't worth it? Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi, Few travelers make it to Jaffna, either because they don’t have enough time since it’s quite far from the classic routes, or because of completely unfounded rumors about risks of clashes between Sinhalese and Tamil communities. Sure, the north of the country was heavily affected by the civil war, but that ended in 2009. It’s a region that’s different from the rest of the country (quite flat) and not very touristy, where I had the most authentic interactions with the Sri Lankan people. Personally, I spent 3 nights there and rented a scooter for 2 days: 1 day to explore the San Pedro area to the east, and 1 day to visit the islands to the west. The locals were genuinely happy that foreigners were visiting their region. And for a little anecdote, they asked me to take selfies with them several times—once with soldiers and once with police officers. In short, I really encourage you to go to Jaffna; I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
