Hi there, who has already done the EURO VELO 1 in Norway from the south to the North Cape, and what are the main difficulties: elevation gain, etc....... Otherwise, who has already done the EURO VELO 7 from south to north, crossing Sweden up to the North Cape? If so, what are the difficulties, elevation gain, and does it pass through villages for supplies, etc.......

hi there,

I did part of this route three years ago. We started in Oslo and made our way to Trondheim via the plateaus (avoiding the southern coast and its touristy fjords). After that, we followed the EuroVelo 1 all the way to the North Cape, passing through the Lofoten Islands...

As for the cycling, there’s no technical difficulty. The roads are well-maintained, there aren’t many cars, and the ones that are around are very considerate. The elevation gains are pretty minimal. We went through the famous North Cape tunnel (250 m below sea level). The slopes are around 9% for 3–4 km, but it’s manageable (just make sure you’ve got good lights). We took full advantage of the right to bivouac (it’s in the constitution). The biggest challenge was dealing with the weather. That year (which was quite rainy), we had rain roughly two days out of three, with a few nice stretches of several days at 26°C, but the average was more like 13–17°C with some wind and rain. All the cycle-tourers we met would occasionally stay in "hytte"—wooden cabins at campsites—to dry their gear and sleep somewhere dry. (Some friends who did the same route the following year had 30 days of 30°C weather with no rain, but you shouldn’t count on that!)

Otherwise, the landscapes are stunning, the midnight sun is incredible, and we even bivouacked at the North Cape (pretty basic conditions). It was amazing.

I’ve got photos and the full story on my blog, but I’ll let you discover the magic for yourselves...
