Quand on pense à l'Irlande ou aux Highlands.
En voiture, est-il possible d'improviser notre destination? En plus clair, il y a peu de chances pour que nous nous décidions avant de mettre le contact. Et même là, il y aura quelques kilomètres pendant lesquels on se dira "tout droit ou à gauche?" (voir même "finalement, on part pour la Grèce...ou le Maroc...ou...")
Trouve-ton facilement de la place sur les ferries ou est-ce déjà trop tard? (pour l'Ecosse, je ne m'inquiète pas ; c'est plutôt pour filer en Islande ou pour faire la traversée Roscoff-Irlande)
Je ne sais pas où on ira, mais je n'ai pas envie de rêver un voyage que nous ne ferons pas pour de bêtes questions logistiques...

C'est la question que je ne cesse de me poser, face à une "pâte d'oie" sans panneau, après les conseils avisés de l'autochtone : "C'est simple, c'est tout droit !".
Pour l'Islande, je pense que c'est jouable, à condition de viser juste.
En effet le ferry qui assure la liaison doit faire quelques escale à Scrabster, au nord de l'Ecosse (une fois toute les 2 ou 3 semaines).
Cette escale est la dernière avant l'Islande, donc on peut imaginer que les passager descendu aux Îles Féroé et en Norvège ont laissé un peut de place.
Il faut vérifier, auprès de la compagnie, l'horaire, et les dates de passage.

J'ai fait le trajet depuis le Danemark et je ne comprends pas bien l'ordre des étapes, je pense qu'il n'y a toujours qu'un seul Bateau, le Norröna, qui assure la liaison (Islande-Danemark), avec un aller retour par semaine et des escales systématique aux Féroé et à Bergen, et une escale soit à Scrabster, soit au Îles Shetland.
Donc pour résumer si vous faite un bout de route en direction de l'Ecosse, vous aurez le loisir de vous poser la question : Irlande vs Islande ?
Et pourquoi une semaine aux Îles Féroé ?
Pour l'Irlande et l'Ecosse, c'est tout a fait faisable de partir a l'improviste. Il y a beaucoup de B&B pour dormir et les ferry ne manque pas.
Aprés, il y a des gens qui aime bien faire tout a l'improviste. pour ma part, j'aime pas trop "perdre" mon temps a me tromper de route, ou passer a coté de truc superbe juste parce que je n'ai pas fait de recherches sur quoi visiter. Tous les pays ont beaucoup de choses a offrir et comme en vacance, on est malheuresement limité en temps, il faut faire des choix.

En ce qui concerne l'Islande, par contre la, je serai "moins chaud". C'est superbe, c'est clairement une destination a faire. Je compte y retrouner rapidement moi-même. Le problème, c'est que c'est loin, et il faut bien 17-22h de traversé. Si vous n'etes pas limité en temps, vous avez beaucoup de chance. :P donc ca ne sera peut-etre pas un souci.
Par contre, sur place, vous allez avoir un souci si vous avez votre propre voiture. Il y a beaucoup de chose extra-ordinaire a voir a l'intérieur du pays .... et il n'y a que des routes en terre ou des pistes. Il y a des passage de gué, de route abimé, etc...
Et même sur le contour de l'île, vous devrez forcéement certaine fois rouler sur des routes en terre.
Le milieu de l'île, sans 4X4 (et équipé pour le passage de gué - remonter la boite a air, etc...). Faut oublier. C'est prendre des risques inutiles de casser son véhicule.
Sur les bords, peux tout a fait aller sur certains sites, mais faudra rouler vraiment doucement.
Bref, l'Islande avec son propre véhicule si c'est un citadin, ca me semble une bien mauvaise idée. Il faut absolument aller voir certain site au milieu.
Quand je dis "improvisation", c'est plutôt dans le sens de décider à la dernière minute notre destination. Sur place, je ne m'inquiète pas : j'ai déjà lu pas mal de carnets sur le forum, l'Islande est une destination que nous prévoyons depuis 10 ans, en la remettant toujours à plus tard... justement parce qu'il y avait toujours un coup de coeur, quelque chose, qui faisait qu'on partait finalement ailleurs!
Là, c'est plus la question des places sur les ferries et des réservations qui me taraude et qui fait m'interroger sur la possibilité d'improviser un départ.
Pour l'Islande, c'est assez simple (traversée Scrabster-Islande via Féoé), mais je n'arrive pas à connaître le "taux de remplissage" des ferries.
Une solution serait de décider de partir en Ecosse, voir si on peut filer en Islande, et aviser alors : Ecosse ou Islande, en fonction du ferry.
Pour l'Irlande, ce serait au départ de Roscoff, et là, c'est l'inconnu (en-dehors de la durée de la traversée) : les compagnies de ferries ne font pas de devis en ligne en période estivale, et je n'ai pas trop envie d'emm... les gens au téléphone avec quelque chose qui n'est même pas certain.
Bon, on pourrait rester en Bretagne! Mais... l'ayant déjà parcourue à maintes reprises, la prochaine fois que j'y retourne, ce serait autrement qu'en voiture : un Mont Saint-Michel-? (selon la durée du voyage) à pied.
Enfin, nous partirions 3 à 5 semaines (encore à déterminer) et le schéma serait le même : 3 jours "pépères" / 3 jours de marche ; donc, l'intérieur de l'Islande, ce serait à pied, ou avec des locations de 4X4 ponctuels.
Si vous avez des infos de prix pour la traversée vers l'Irlande et l'Angleterre (voiture, passager), ça m'intéresse (pour l'Islande, je crois que ça faisait dans les 800 euros la voiture + 2 adultes + 1 enfant)

Juste pour info, j'ai un séjour d'un moi avec ma moto routière (VFR) en Islande.
C'est sur que l'on ne peut pas prendre les piste à trois chiffres, de l'intérieur, mais le tour par la route 1 ne pose aucun problème, certes les passage sur la terre usent un peu plus ma moto mais c'est tout a fait praticable.
On peut s'enfoncer pas mal dans les terres au risque de faire demi tour face à un gué un peu trop difficile...
Pour l'hébergement, si vous êtes en voiture faite suivre la tente, des fois que les farm holliday ou autre Auberge de jeunesse soit complète.
J'ai fais mon voyage en mai, et je n'ai eu aucun soucis pour trouver de quoi dormir au chaud, au jour le jour. En pleine saison, c'est à tenter mais moins évident.
Pour le bateau, le truc marrant serait de se pointer à l'escale à Scrabster, pour demander si il y a de la place, directement au personnel du bateau. Parce que les agents commerciaux, bien au chaud dans leurs bureau de Tórshavn, vous diront facilement que le bateau est complet, sans avoir de nouvelles fraîches sur l'état de "remplissement" réel.
A chacun de mais voyage sur le Norröna, j'ai pris un "surclassement", c'est à dire qu'ils m'ont donné une cabine d'un standing supérieur au couchettes que j'avais réservé (moyennant finance) donc des place était disponible...
J'ai visité l'Ecosse, l'Irlande, la Norvège et l'Islande pour des questions de coût est en instance !
Nous sommes chaque fois partie avec une seule direction le Sud ou le Nord pour prévoir l'équipement En voiture, en tente ou chez l'habitant.
Prévoir un budget car les ferry's renviennent chers, les hôtels également. Par contre en Norvège, poser une tente coûte quelque soit le nbre de personnes : 15 €.

Tu as raison de le préciser pour les réservations. Quand nous avions fait la norvège, nous avions réservé l'embarcation au Danemark et nous sommes arrivés 1/2 journée plus tôt, il n'y avait personne et nous avons embarqué sur un trajet moins cher. Au retour à la maison, ils nous avaient remboursé de la différence.

We’re planning a short trip at the end of July to explore the legendary mountains and valleys of the Bernese Oberland: round trip from Nancy (Swiss highway vignette planned), 2 nights in a room with a small kitchen in Adelboden, then 2 nights in a hotel at the Gletscherblick in Grindelwald, both with half-board included.
Could you share some tips on the best road routes to take, as well as some walking hikes (we’re not as fit as we used to be, so nothing longer than 2-3 hours)? Maybe also 1 or 2 cable car rides—I was thinking of Oeschinensee Lake above Kandersteg and the First gondola above Grindelwald for better panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau... all while keeping it doable with our schedule. I visited the Faroe Islands in late March 2026 for about ten days. I was invited by a friend who lives near Tórshavn, so I don’t have any info on tourist accommodations or car rentals. Still, I’d like to share a few thoughts about my trip:
- Before leaving, I consulted travel guides and blogs. I was surprised by how repetitive and unoriginal the featured sites were. This leads hurried travelers to follow the same overcrowded routes, which can annoy locals. I found that all Faroese villages were interesting—they reflect the country’s identity, even without the iconic grass-roofed houses. Those are indeed harmonious and beautiful, but they feel like an exotic cliché. For activities, I loved the lively ports that keep the country running.
- I was annoyed by the paid trails in tourist spots. Locals explained that these paths cross private land, and owners are responsible for maintenance and safety. There are plenty of free trails, too—signs at the start detail their features. While not alarmist, the extreme and unpredictable weather is a key factor to consider before setting out.
- The wind’s strength really impressed me. The architecture, with doors and windows opening outward to prevent gusts from blowing roofs off, speaks to the harsh climate. Some days, relentless rain and squalls made going outside unappealing. I realized that in this country, it’s best to plan for flexible indoor days.
- Distances are relatively short. I was happy to be based near Tórshavn because it was easy to explore one or more places in a day. The roads are in great condition. In late March, diesel was 2 €. Tunnel tolls can add up (~26 € per crossing), making a fixed base less practical than I’d thought.
- Everyone agrees: the landscapes are breathtaking. Nature feels untamed here—except for the short grass, thanks to all the woolly sheep.
- The flight from Paris to the Faroe Islands (and back) was long in March—11 hours with three legs: Paris-Amsterdam, Amsterdam-Copenhagen, Copenhagen-Vágar. In bad weather, Vágar Airport can close, causing delays. During tourist season, Atlantic Airways offers a direct Paris-Faroe Islands flight, which is more comfortable and cheaper.
- I found a book recommendation in a guide that fascinated me after my trip: *Les collectionneurs d'images* by Joanes Nielsen. Through its sometimes caricatured characters, it offers a glimpse into Faroese mentalities from the 1950s to 1970s—attitudes that likely persist today.
In conclusion, I’ve traveled a lot and I’m tired of destinations that all start to look the same. The Faroe Islands were a delight—a country stunning in its landscape, climate, and culture, where tourism has barely altered its authenticity.

We’re heading to Bavaria from May 13 to 23, with a side trip to Austria.
Here’s our itinerary:

Day 3: Munich and departure for Salzburg
We’ll be staying three nights in Salzburg.
Then we’ll head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we’ll stay for five nights.
Visiting Munich and Salzburg isn’t too tricky.
Once in Garmisch, we’re planning a day in Innsbruck, a day for Neuschwanstein Castle, and the rest is still up in the air.
What’s really got me stumped is that we’d love to see Königssee Lake—everyone says it’s a must-see.
We’d also like to visit the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), where the landscapes are supposedly stunning.
This would either be a round trip while we’re in Salzburg or on the way between Salzburg and Garmisch, but I’m guessing it’s impossible to do the drive from Salzburg to Garmisch, the Eagle’s Nest, *and* Königssee Lake all in one day.
Plus, the Alpine route between Salzburg and Garmisch seems prettier than the highway.
But honestly, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the planning.
We should’ve added a stop between Salzburg and Garmisch, but the hotels are already booked.

I’m sharing my draft itinerary with you because I just booked our flight tickets, and I feel like it’s quite late in the season. So, I’d like to be sure about my stops before reserving the hotels. I’ll be traveling alone with my two adult children. We want to prioritize outdoor walks, avoid too many indoor visits (both for budget and preference), and not spend too much time on the road.
D1: Arrival at 9 AM in Malaga, day in Malaga and overnight stay
D2: Head straight to Nerja (1-hour drive) and spend the night there
D3: Head straight to Granada (1.5-hour drive), spend the day and night there
D4: Granada. Visit the Alhambra (Nasrid Palaces tour at 5 PM) and spend the night
D5: Head to Ronda (2.5-hour drive) and spend the night
D6: White Villages and overnight in Ronda
D7: Head straight to the Costa del Sol (e.g., Estepona), spend the day and night there
D8: Return to Malaga to catch our flight
There you go! This itinerary takes into account that we’d like to do a circuit starting from Seville in a few years. That said, it’d be a shame to miss something doable from Malaga.

Since the Alhambra visit is only at 5 PM, and we’d already have the day to explore Granada, would arriving the day before be a mistake? Or should we skip this day and dedicate it elsewhere (Costa del Sol? Head toward Tabernas?)? The old town appeals to me, but maybe the Sacromonte neighborhood isn’t essential...
Same question for Ronda: should we dedicate a full day to it, or combine Ronda and the White Villages in one day?
Note that we love wandering around villages outside, so that might answer my question! :)
Final question: Is it better to rent the car at Malaga Airport or in the city? If we rent at the airport, we’d need a hotel with parking, which doesn’t seem easy. Or stay outside the city and park for free near the center if possible? I’ve read comments about taking a taxi to Malaga and then picking up the rental car at the airport the next morning. The taxi would really need to be affordable...

we’re a couple planning a 2-week road trip this August, with a must-stop (about 3 days on Skye). Any route suggestions? Hotel recommendations? Photo spots?
My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September 2026.
We’ll be flying from Montreal to London, where we’ll spend three nights.
After that, we’ll head to Dublin for a few days and take trains to visit the main attractions.
Our ideal plan would be to choose hotels near train stations and take tours to the interesting spots.
Would 8 days in Ireland be enough for this kind of trip?
