Tout d'abord bravo à cette communauté de voyageurs : c'est génial de trouver un site comme ça où les gens s'entraident.
J'ai déja pu profiter de ce site pour d'autres voyages (en conseillant ou étant conseillé), et l'accueil est toujours de qualité.
Alors voilà, je prépare un voyage avec ma compagne aux etats unis, environ 30 jours (mi juillet à mi aout) : je peux rajouter 2-3 jours de plus si besoin, donc hésitez pas à me le dire si ça vous semble utile.
Je suis assez rodé sur les 12 premiers jours, mais très perdu pour la partie désert plus au sud.
J'aurais donc 2 questions si vous pouviez m'aider à y répondre ce serait très sympa à vous :
1) faut il un 4X4 impérativement pour ces endroits du désert ? Ou bien les routes sont elles OK ?
En effet, pour le reste du parcours ca ne me semble pas utile, hors je souhaiterais eviter de consommer 15 litres au 100..
Y a t'il un type de véhicule qui pourrait faire le compromis entre un 4X4 et une routière sans trop consommer ?
2) si vous en avez le temps, pourriez vous donner des conseils sur la partie de Moab jusqu'à Las Vegas ?

Un oubli de taille dans votre premier itinéraire : Bryce ?!
Non, un 4x4 n'est pas indispensable si vous ne souhaitez pas faire de pistes.
Globalement, on peut dire que vous prenez bien votre temps dans le premier circuit. Il y aurait moyen d'en voir plus (Bryce, Mesa Verde...), ou plus court, si vous le souhaitez.
Le deuxième par contre ne tient pas la route. "Gd Canyon, canyon de chelly, moument valley" en un jour, c'est impossible. Pourquoi tant de précipiration alors que vous avez tant de temps ? Par ailleurs, Page est à faire avant Bryce, dans ce sens.

Beau programme et vous prenez votre temps, c'est peu commun 😛. Pour la partie Moab voici quelques idées:
j13 : --> Moab + 1 visite ? Dead Horse Point State Park vue qu'il s'agit d'un point de vue à quelques dizaines de km de Moab seulement. Au coucher du soleil ça peut être pas mal 😉
j14 : Moab Arches National Park
j15 : Moab Canyonlands, la partie Island In The Sky
Vous pouvez si vous le souhaiter rallonger de 1 ou 2 jours la visite de Moab et ses environs, il y a beaucoup à voir dans le coin. Ci-dessus c'est l'immanquable!
Ne pas oublier Bryce après Page et avant Zion! Sinon pour le reste ça me semble pas mal, peut être un peu trop d'océan à la fin? 😛 Vous ne visitez pas San Francisco? Vous repartez de Los Angeles?

Effectivement vous prenez pas mal le temps de vous posez. Vu le nombre de jour je me permettrai de rajouter quelques points d'intèrets à votre place :
- Bryce
- Death Valley
Pour Yellowstone , 5 nuits à West Yellowstone ne me semble pas judicieux , 2 ou 3 plus vers l'est du park serait mieux.
A partir du J 15 , c'est bâclé ! Pas de Bryce Canyon , Capitol Reef , Torrey , Scenic Byway 12 , Valley of Fire , .... ?
Pas San Francisco ?
Yosemite , Los Angeles , Bis Sur : dans cet ordre ?
En 17 jours ( +3 si tu peux ) à partir de Moab , il y a de quoi faire nettement plus rationnel pour profiter de ce voyage , reprend une carte et un bon guide , plus quelques carnets de voyage à lire sur le forum pour des idées.
Pour l'océan au-dessus de LA , si c'est pour les plages , le pacifique est plus chaud vers San Diego.
Je ne peux que confirmer globalement ce qui a été dit précédemment.
C'est un peu bizarre de passer 30 jours dans l'Ouest américain et de faire l'impasse sur Bryce, Death Valley ou San Francisco.
C'est bien de trainer un peu au début du voyage en t'attardant à Teton ou Yellowstone, mais ça ne doit pas se faire au détriment du reste...
Et je ne suis pas sûr que ça vaille le coup de rester autant sur la côte Pacifique...
Dernière remarque...
Le trajet entre Yellowstone et Moab via SLC ne me semble pas forcément la meilleure solution. Déjà, je ferais étape à Cody, juste à l'Est de Yellowstone. La route qui y mène est très belle, le musée du Far West très intéressant et tu peux assister à un sympatique rodéo... Ensuite, la route entre Cody et Moab peut se faire dans la journée, même si c'est assez long et plutôt monotone.
pour le début, je ne partirais pas cache comme ça de Salt lake pour Grand Teton car au début on est un peu déphasé du décallage horaire. Je restrai au moins 2 jours à SLC pour "m'acclimater", et ensuite je partirai pour Jackson, sinon vous allez être tellement HS que vous allez passé à côté de cet endroit merveilleux !
Pour ma part je ne serais pas resté à West yellowstone...
Des oublis parmi les "Five Fabulous" ! Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef !!
un seul petit jour à Page ... dommage.
Canyonland: 1 journée Island in the Sky, couplée avec Dead Horse Point SP
2 journées à Arches c'est bien. Si vous aimez les randos, même 1 journée de plus, tant ce parc est grandiose et immense !
Je ne vois pas death Valley...
Pourquoi autant de Côte Pacifique ?
Tu peux t'inspirer de mes divers trajets sur mon blog (notamment 2005 pour la partie Yellowtone) ou n'importe quel autre pour le reste du parcours. On n'a jamais loué de 4x4, et on s'est bien baladé quand même 😉. mais, si tu souhaites faire des pistes, alors oui un 4x4 est nécessaire.
N'hésite pas si tu as besoin, ce sera avec plaisir !

C'est pas facile de trouver un circuit : Salt Lake City --> Las Vegas (SF) qui permette de voir Capitol Reef, Monument valley, Zion, Arches, canyonland, Bryce, Lake Powel et Grand Canyon sans faire des zigzag je trouve..
Mais bon, j'y bosse, et j'espère trouver la solution miracle ^^

C'est vrai que quand on vient du nord, ça complique un peu les choses. Les zigzags sont quasiment inévitables.
Pourquoi pas quelque chose du style (pour la séquence des parcs) :
A partir de Salt Lake City : Zion - Bryce - Capitol Reef - Moab - Monument Valley - Page - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - Death Valley - Yosemite - San Francisco - côte
Ou alors il faut revoir complètement votre circuit, et partir de la Californie ou de Las Vegas, et remonter vers le Nord, pour redescendre ensuite vers San Fransisco. Vous pourriez vous inspirer du superbe circuit de Kathydjé (voir son carnet de voyage)

Les " zig zag " sont un peu incontournables si l'on veut "tout" voir , pour les durées que je donne c'est parce que tu disposes de temps pour mieux profiter . Mais à savoir que certains passent une semaine à Page tant il y a à voir à proximité.

j5 : --> boulder ou Torey (en prenant son temps, avec d'eventuels arrets en route) Capitol Reef puis route jusqu'à Moab (ce n'est pas si loin !) Là, tu as déjà gagné 2 jours !
j6 : capitol reef Moab - Arches (par exemple) Nuit Moab
j7 : longue route jusqu'a Moab : soirée arch by nigth Moab - Canyonlands Island in the sky + Dead Horse Point. Nuit Moab.
j8 : arches randos , le soir loger a Monticello Pourquoi Monticello ? Pour Canyonlands The Needles ? Sinon, trace direct jusqu'à Monument Valley où il faut être pour le coucher de soleil. En route : Goosenecks et éventuellement Valley of the Gods.
j9 : monticello :canyon Land Route vers Page. A 11h30, Antelope. Aprem : Horseshoe Bend et lac.
j10 : canyon land bis ? au soir, route à Mexican Hat Route vers Grand Canyon + visite Grand Canyon
j11 : Monument valley Grand Canyon

Et comme on te l'a deja dit, pour convaincre Madame de gratter quelques jours à l'ocean, rappelles lui la temperature de celui ci.
Certes la cote est belle, mais 15° C, cela signifie passer ces journées sur la plage à regarder les vagues. Bof bof , non?
Il n'y a que deux façons de vivre sa vie : l'une en faisant comme si rien n'était un miracle, l'autre comme si tout était un miracle.
Ton voyage ressemble un peu à celui que nous avons fait cet été.
Nous étions parti 36 jours en CC de SLC, puis aller-retour Gd Teton et Yellowstone, pour enchainer ensuite Zion, Gd Canyon North, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyon Lands (Island in the Sky et Needles), Monument Valley, Page et Lake Powell, Gd Canyon South, Las Vegas, Yosemite, Sequioa, pour finir par la cote Pacifique de Cambria à San Francisco en passant à Big Sur et Monterey. Ouf !!
Ce programme extraordinaire nous a permis de prendre notre temps et de bien randonner à chaque endroit. Sentiment de bien en profiter !

EDIt : je viens d'avaler votre blog (comme les autres sites de plusieurs des membres célèbres de ce forum ^^) : c'est vraiment super agréable à lire et très vivant. Ca me conforte dans nos choix. Peut etre reduire à trois jours la cote en effet, mais Mademoiselle aime le bruit des vagues et la fraicheur du vent salé.. ET moi aussi ^^ Donc on va surement pas rester en dessous de 3 jours ^^'.

Par contre, pas de location de bateau vu que les prix se comptent en milliers de dollars... 🤪 Y a d'ailleurs une belle page a ce sujet sur ouestusa recemment (septembre 2009). Mais il semblerait que nous n'ayons pas les mêmes moyens ^^' (bateau + jetski , aouch, ca douille!).

J'ai vu l'info concernant la loterie au sujet de The Wave, je voullais savoir si il en etait de meme pour d'autre parcs ?
Faut il par exemple reserver un permis plusieurs mois à l'avance pour Antelope, ou le jour meme suffit ? De meme, pour Anteloppe, savez vous si on est obligé de passer par un guide (j'ai lu cela sur un site, mais je ne l'ai pas retrouvé ailleurs) ?

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
