Je vous expose ici ma journée qui va m'amener de LA à Flagstaff.
J'ai lu que la portion de la route 66 la plus intéressante était de Needless à Seligman.
Départ : 07h du matin et autoroute jusqu'à Needless en passant par Victorville, Barstow et Newberry spring , sans arrêt (nous ne sommes pas fan du film bagdad café)
Arrivée prévu Needless : 12h30 en comptant arrêt pipi
Needless - Oatman par la route 66 : 40 min
Oatman - Kingman par la route 66 : 45 min
Kingman - Peach Springs - Seligman par la route 66 : 1h30
Seligman - Williams : 45 min
Williams - Flagstaff : 40 min
Ce parcours parait il cohérent ?
ça sera un peu speed mais je pense qu'on peut être vers 20h à Flagstaff.
Fin mai, on est parti de GLENDALE un dimanche matin à 7h30, et on est arrivé à OATMAN vers 12h (avec 1 arret pipi et plein d'essence).
MAIS, c'etait un dimanche donc aucun bouchon sur la 210 qui menait à la 15, et je roulais 10 miles au dessus des vitesses postées.
Donc tout dépendra de votre lioeu de départ à LA, et aussi et surtout des bouchons. Il y a é ans, j'ai perdu beaucoup de temps pour aller de LAX à BARSTOW a cause de la circulation./
Ca correspond un peu à ce qu'on a fait.
Perso, on est passé à OATMAN, puis ensuite on a repris la 40 avant KINGMAN pour s'arreter à SELIGMAN, puis surtout à WILLIAMS (dejeuner tardif puis boutique) ensuite route jusqu'au Grand canyon village pour arriver à l'hotel vers 18h
Je vais me faire tuer mais je dirais que perso je zapperais.
Tout depend de l'interet que vs mettez dans le mythe de la 66, et aussi du temps que vs pouvez y consacrer, au detriment peut etre à d'autres points interessants.

Le tronçon à ne pas rater (je ne connais pas encore le tronçon entre needles et LA) c'est bien de Needles à Kingman.
Needles est une ville mega glauque ... je regrette amèrement d'y avoir passé une nuit .. La ville est presque une ville fantôme. Cela a peut-être changé depuis 2013 mais à l'époque les crises successives ont totalement achevées la ville. Bref, tu pourras ravitailler en essence (essence la moins chère que j'ai trouvé d'ailleurs) ou autre mais je ne peux pas te conseiller de perdre du temps à Needles, car, le meilleur arrive après.
Entre Kingman et Seligman, en passant par Peach Spring, il n'y a strictement rien à voir ! Pas une goutte d'essence d'ailleurs donc fait le plein à Kingman au besoin. Le terrain est plat sans rien pour accrocher la vu. Sauf à aller à havasupai, ce tronçon n'a aucun intérêt. Je te conseille de préserver ton temps et de gagner 30 minutes en passant par l'I40. Par contre, un stop à Seligman s'impose :)
Perso, près de Barstow, j'ai prévu de faire un stop à Calico ghost town .. cela peut-être une idée de stop supplémentaire pour toi 😉

Si votre destination est le GC, vous pouvez vous arreter a Williams vous serez plus pres du GC.
Je pense que vos temps de trajet sont un peu ambitieux: Needles Oatman en 40 minutes, je doute.😠
Oatman Kingman en 45 minutes?
Vos temps de trajet sur le Freeway I-40 me semblent aussi un peu ambitieux, bien sur vous pouvez rouler plus vite que la vitesse limite, mais la vous prenez des risques.
Faire un tout petit detour par Amboy ne vous ferait pas perdre beaucoup de temps et cela en vos la peine.

A l'inverse on m'a bcp déconseillé Calico ...
Es-tu sûr pour Kingman Seligman? car entre ces deux villes il n'y a rien mais rien. D'ailleurs Peach Spring c'est juste une intersection avec une forme de "relais resto" moderne sans aucun intérêt .... Je suis curieuse de connaître tes sources car soit j'ai raté quelques choses soit je dormais soit on t'a menti 😉 Après, il est vrai qu'à force on devient blasé mais là ... je reste dubitative ...
En fait, tu aurais beaucoup de temps, je dirai oui mais vu que ton programme est serré, je pense qu'il y a mieux à voir que cette partie ... a toi de voir 😉

Pour revenir sur le débat Flagstaff c/ William, c'est vrai que tu gagnes 30 minutes de trajet. William GC 1h contre Flag GC 1h30. Après, et cela n'engage que moi, je préfère Flagstaff. C'est une plus grande ville dont le centre, petite certes, à pas mal de charme. Après, j'ai déjà dormi deux fois à Flag et n'ai fait que passer à Williams ... il y a donc un biais 😉

1h30 entre Needles et OATMAN... Je veux bien que vs fassiez des arrets photos, mais ca fait quand même beaucoup trainer. Meme chose pour OATMAN KINGMAN.
De OATMAN vers LA, la 66 suivait elle le tracé actuel de la 10 jusqu'à TOPOCK (ce qu'indique GOOGLE MAPS), ou la 153 jusqu'à NEEDLES.(ce qui me semblerait plus logique comme tracé)?
Perso, cette année j'ai preferé prendre la 10, car ca me semblait plus sympa comme paysage.
J'ai maximiser les temps volontairement car je pense que dans chaque ville/village on restera un petit peu aussi, même si y a sûrement des endroits très petit je pense.
Comme déjà dit, je ne suis pas tres fan de la route 66, du moins de la route en elle même. Il y a d'autres 2 voies au USA plus belles.
La route à mon humble avis ne vaut que par les villages qu'elle traverse, ou pas des portions différentes que ces traversées de desert ou il n'y a rien, .
Effectivement ta vidéo ne fait pas rêver ... Que me conseilles tu du coup ?
Quelles sont les parties qui valent le coup entre Barstow et Williams ?

Je te mets en gras ce que j'ai déjà fait. Le reste c'est pour cet été 😉
Donc à Barstow, du peux passer par Calico Ghost town, ensuite route à Amboy pour voir le Météor crater, ensuite attention, la route est fermé à partir de Chambless, il faut donc juste avant cette ville prendre plein nord sur la Kelbaker Road.
A ce stade, pourquoi pas un incursion dans Mojave preserve? Je l'ai raté il y a 2 ans car nous étions trop fatiguées donc hâte d'arriver à Vegas. Cette année, selon l'heure à laquelle j'arrive sur Kelbaker Road, j'y ferai peut-être un saut.
Ensuite 140 E et sortie à Fenner pour reprendre la 66. Visite de Goffs sur le chemin avant d'arriver à Needles. Ensuite, bien sur la route superbe vers oatman - Kingman. Ensuite, après kingman, I40 arrêt au ranch des Alpacas et à Seligman et William.
Pour résumer, le tronçon entre Needles et Kingman est incontournable 😛

Depuis Oatman, la Route 66 a ete renommee Hwy 153 jusqu'au carrefour ou la Route 66 Hwy 10 part vers la gauche.
Ce parcourt est la vraie Route 66 qui allait jusqu'a Topock.
Pour le trace de la Route 66 de Topock vers Needles, reprenez mon livre sur mon blog, j'y ai mis tous les details.
La Route 66 franchissait le Colorado a Topock.

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?
We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.
Unfortunately, he just lost it, and he was really attached to it. So, if there’s a kind soul passing by Mount Rushmore who could bring one back for me (I’d obviously cover all costs), that would be amazing for my son.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.

I’m planning a week-long family trip to NYC in October 2026. The focus is on museums and soaking up the New York vibe. I’ve been checking Airbnb, but the prices in Manhattan are through the roof. Since I don’t know NYC well, is it "wise" to look outside Manhattan? Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?
After our first trip to the West, we’d love to go back to see other must-see spots!

Just a little post that might interest some of you:

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
