Hi there, I’m planning a trip with my partner (no kids this time—thanks, Grandma!) for two weeks to celebrate her 40th birthday. I’ve been thinking about Chile. We’re looking at leaving around September 18, 2027, starting in the south and returning in early April. Here’s what I had in mind:

8 nights in a van in the Lake District and the start of the Carretera Austral (up to the Chaitén area). We’re set to arrive in Puerto Montt around 2:00 PM. We don’t want to go too far south since we’re planning to explore the heart of Patagonia (Chile and Argentina) with the kids when they’re older. The idea is to spend 3 nights discovering the lakes (up to Cochamó) and 3 nights in Pumalín Park. I’ve also added two transition nights. 7 nights in the Atacama to experience another side of Chile (San Pedro), taking a domestic flight from Puerto Montt to Calama in the early afternoon. We’ll depart for France in the early evening from Santiago.

Hi, I’m really surprised by the wide range of prices charged by car rental companies in Chile, so I’d like to know which type of vehicle is best suited for the roads in the Lake District: Puerto Montt and Ensenada, between Ensenada and Pucón, and between Pucón and Currarrehue, for example. I have the choice between 4x4s (expensive!), 4x2s (I don’t know what that is), SUVs (also expensive), and more classic vehicles. Thanks in advance! JJC

Nous partons le 3 Novembre. Arrivée à Santiago le soir vers 22 heures . Nuit à l'hôtel Ibis et départ en bus le lendemain matin pour Témuco ou nous resterons dans cette région pendant 2 semaines, puis 1 semaine de plus dans la région de La Séréna. Est il prudent de se rendre dans ce pays ? Nous ne faisons que transiter par Santiago. Pour nôtre 6 ème trip en Amérique du Sud, c'est pas de chance. Nous avons bien entendu les billets d'avion, les réservation de voiture et d'hôtels. Enfin bref...la totale. J'espère avoir de bons conseils pour prendre une décision. Merci à tous d'avance.

Bonjour, Comme beaucoup, nous n'avons pas la possibilité de prendre trois semaines de congé à une période autre que les mois de juillet et aout 😕 Nous savons que ce n'est pas la meilleure période pour visiter le Chili mais nous avons prévu, tout de même, de passer 4-5 jours à l'Ile de Pâques, une grosse semaine à SPA et dans l'extrême nord, et une grosse semaine dans le nord de la Patagonie. Parmi les excursions classiques de ces deux dernières régions, qu'est ce que nous pourrons et ne pourrons pas faire pendant l'hiver chilien ?

This trip would include the Atacama Desert, which I was lucky enough to visit alone once and would love to experience again with her. But I'd like to add one or two other places to visit, keeping in mind that we're much more into nature than cities. I was thinking about part of adjacent Bolivia... but since we'll have already seen quite a few stunning high-altitude lakes around Atacama, what would be some interesting and very different spots? We would have loved to include Peru as well, but it might be tricky to combine in just two weeks. I’ve planned a 3.5-week trip to Chile in February/March 2025, with the goal of driving the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt to Caleta Tortel in a rented 4x4. The itinerary is set, accommodations are booked, and the 4x4 is reserved. We could still tweak things a bit, but it’s getting harder to find available lodging in some spots.

Here’s the planned route: - 1 night in Puerto Montt on arrival day - 2 nights in Castro (Chiloé Island) - 2 nights near Ensenada - 1 night in Horniporén - 1 night in Chaitén - 3 nights in Puyuhuapi - 2 nights in Coyhaique - 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane - 2 nights in Caleta Tortel - 3 nights in Puerto Guadal - 1 night in Chile Chico (to take the ferry across the lake) - 1 night in Villa Cerro Castillo before flying out from Balmaceda

I have a few questions about the activities we’d like to do:

The **Marble Caves**: I’d love an option that lets us "go inside" them. From what I’ve read, this depends on the water level, wind, and type of boat. Any tips or advice? We’d like to do an **excursion to see condors**. We were thinking of doing this while in Coyhaique (we’re staying 2 nights). Has anyone done this? With which agency? We’re spending 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane. The idea is to **explore the vast Patagonia Park and its wildlife**. But I’m not sure where to start. Any recommendations for day hikes or itineraries? I read somewhere that you can do a day trip with a guide that includes a boat ride on Lake Cochrane, but I can’t find the booking info. An agency for **glacier exploration** (we were thinking of **Lake Leones Glacier**). I contacted Ruta León but haven’t heard back. Any agencies to recommend?

Nous sommes allés cet été avec ma femme et ma fille de 18 mois parcourir l'ouest canadien pour 3 semaines, et je commence déjà à penser à notre futur voyage. Nous sommes déjà allés (sans la petite toutefois) en Islande, Guadeloupe, Slovénie, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Croatie, Sicile... Cependant, j'ai quelques questions : - Equateur, Pérou ou Chili : est-ce possible avec un jeune enfant de 18 mois ? Notamment à cause de l'altitude et le côté sanitaire. - Peut-on combiner sur 3 semaines, Equateur/Galapagos - Pérou/Bolivie - Chili (autre)/Patagonie ? - Quelle est la meilleure période pour chacun ? - En budget, combien faut-il prévoir par jour (nourriture et logement avec 2 chambres) ? - Pour les billets d'avion, combien ça coûte par personne aller/retour pour les meilleures périodes ? - Outre la rando (nous avons l'habitude de randonner, comme en Islande, dans les Rocheuses canadiennes, le Stromboli, bivouac dans les Pyréenées...), quelles sont les activités que nous pourrions faire avec des enfants en bas âge ? - Enfin, est-il possible d'envisager ces pays sans pour autant changer de lieu d'hébergement tous les jours (pas comme en Islande, et avec des enfants, c'est plus compliqué) ?

Une hausse des tarifs de transport en début du mois a provoqué de nombreuses manifestations plus ou moins spontanées dans le métro de Santiago.

Le phénomène a pris de l'ampleur et des pillages de grandes surfaces ont maintenant eu lieu aussi.

L'État d'Urgence a été déclaré, pour le moment, UNIQUEMENT EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA RÉGION MÉTROPOLITAINE, càd Santiago et les environs immédiats.

Mais. des manifestations ont actuellement lieu dans d'autres villes du Chili et la situation pourrait empirer encore.

La situation s'est fort dégradée ces dernières heures.

Restez particulièrement attentifs.

Hi everyone, We’re two women of a certain age heading off to discover Chile for three weeks starting at the end of December. We’re not really hikers, but we’re planning a few days in Torres del Paine (flying from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales), though we’re having trouble getting around the park by transport and finding reasonably priced accommodation... There are a lot of bad reviews about the services on-site and the prices—overtourism! Is it still doable this season? Rent a car from Puerto Natales airport? Or would it be better to focus on another region that’s just as beautiful but less touristy? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The National Tourism Service SERNATUR published a small graphic summary of the current situation in the tourism sector for each region of the country on August 14th.

It shows the percentage of operational tourist attractions, accommodations, airports, and bus stations across Chile’s sixteen regions.

As you can see, in several regions, no tourist attractions are currently available. In two regions, only half are open.

(A quick but important note: the small village of San Pedro de Atacama is in the Antofagasta administrative region, not the Atacama region.)

The situation for accommodations, regional airports, and bus stations is relatively better.

Some good news, though—Torres del Paine National Park is expected to gradually reopen starting September 1st.

Nous partons au Chili - Bolivie - Ile de Pâques en février 2020. Nous aurons 8 jours dans la région de SPA & Sud Lipez avant de retourner à Santiago puis sur l'ïle de Pâques.

Nous arrivons à l'aéroport de Calama puis pensions faire 4 jours à SPA pour faire les différents sites puis 4 jours en Bolivie avec une agence (obligatoire a priori). Que me conseillez-vous ? De louer une voiture pour visiter les sites de SPA ou de le faire avec des tours organisés ? Si location de voiture, faut-il la louer à Calama ou à SPA ? Sachant que nous ne pourrons pas l'utiliser pendant l'excursion bolivienne ?

Une bonne nouvelle pour les amants de la nature. Le président chilien vient d'annoncer deux nouveaux parcs nationaux au Chili.

Le premier, dans la région métropolitaine: Río Clarillo. (Pour être exact, il s'agissait déjà d'une réserve nationale. Elle change tout simplement de catégorie.)

Le deuxième, sur les hauts plateaux de la région administrative de Tarapacá, dans l'extrême nord du pays: Salar de Huasco. Il s'agit d'un endroit intéressant car il est inscrit à la Liste des zones humides d'importance internationale de la convention de Ramsar.

Today, we started looking into traveling in April 2026, either to Chile or Argentina. It’s our first trip to South America. I’ve only been to French Guiana once, about ten years ago, for the space center. In recent years, we’ve usually gone to Asia during the spring holidays.

Based on the flight tickets I’ve found, two arrival and departure options are available: - Arriving in Buenos Aires and departing from Salvador de Bahia. - Arriving in Santiago, Chile, and still departing from Salvador de Bahia.

We’re considering flying business class on the outbound flight so we arrive a bit more rested. The travel class might influence our choice between itinerary A or B.

We’d like to spend two days at Iguazu Falls (both the Argentine and Brazilian sides), which explains the departure from Brazil.

Initially, we thought about arriving in Buenos Aires and staying in Argentina before heading to Iguazu. However, the itinerary forces us to go back through Buenos Aires.

We love nature. The El Calafate region seems to offer beautiful, easily accessible landscapes. Maybe there’s another area we should prioritize.

Here are two itineraries—what do you think? I know it’s short, but we can’t add any more days. We’ll have to make it work.

Option A: D1(Sat): Flight from France to Buenos Aires – arrival at 9:55 PM. D2(Sun): Visit Buenos Aires D3(Mon): Visit Buenos Aires. D4(Tue): Flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate – 3.5-hour flight – arrival around midday. D4(Tue) – until D11(Tue) – visit the El Calafate region: El Calafate / 121km / El Chaltén / 12km / Mount Fitz Roy / 4km / Cerro Torre Mountain / 132km / Perito Moreno Glacier / 57km / El Calafate. D11(Tue): Flight to Buenos Aires D12(Wed): Morning flight to Iguazu (Argentine side) – flight at 6:40 AM or 8:10 AM – 2-hour flight. D13(Thu): Half-day on the Brazilian side – flight around 7:00 PM to Salvador de Bahia. D14(Fri): Visit Salvador de Bahia (downtown) D15(Sat): Morning visit + midday departure for the airport – flight at 5:45 PM from Salvador de Bahia D16(Sun): Arrival in France.

This itinerary forces us to pass through Buenos Aires twice.

D2(Sun): Visit Santiago, Chile D3(Mon): Departure for Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, or El Calafate – to be decided. There’s about a 3-hour flight. We need to check the drop-off fees if we pick up the car in Chile and return it in Argentina – see ADEL RENT A CAR. D3(Mon) – until D10(Mon) – visit the El Calafate region: El Calafate / 121km / El Chaltén / 12km / Mount Fitz Roy / 4km / Cerro Torre Mountain / 132km / Perito Moreno Glacier / 57km / El Calafate. D10(Mon): 3.5-hour flight + visit Buenos Aires. D11(Tue): Visit Buenos Aires D12(Wed): Morning flight to Iguazu (Argentine side) – flight at 6:40 AM or 8:10 AM – 2-hour flight. D13(Thu): Half-day on the Brazilian side – flight around 7:00 PM to Salvador de Bahia. Nous avons prévu pour 2021 un tour du monde et nous avons environ 3 semaines au chili (hors ile de Paques). Il y a l'air d'avoir énormement de choses à faire et à voir dans l'extreme nord, et en avril ce n'est pas forcément la bonne saison en patagonie.

Ma fiancée et moi même avons fraichement débarqués sur le continent, en Guyane, il y a 2 mois. Initialement nous avions prévu, pour début 2020, de se faire un road-trip rando et faune au Costa Rica mais avec notre déménagement surprise à Cayenne on s'est finalement dit que ça risquait d’être un petit peu redondant avec la Guyane (Foret tropicale, jaguar, perroquets tout ça tout ça...). D'où l'Argentine ! 😉 Enfin plus précisément la Patagonie.

Nous projetons donc de partir 3 semaines en Argentine entre Février et mi-Mars.

L'idée serait de faire un road-trip de 2 semaines et demi en Patagonie, en van si possible, et de finir par un aller-retour de 2-3 jours aux chute d’Iguaçu.

Le mieux semble d'arriver à El Calafate, d'y louer un van et faire une boucle avec El Chalten, si possible Torres del paine, puis descendre sur la terre de feu et Ushuaïa.

Je voulais rapidement voir avec ceux qui ont déjà visité cette région, si ça semble réalisable ? Est-ce que vous avez des loueurs de vans à conseiller ou autres conseils en tout genre ?

Nous devons arriver à Punta Arenas le 01/12 à 19h20, nous comptons louer une voiture et aller tout de suite à Puerto Natales. Le soleil se couchera ce jour-là à 21h48 et donc nous bénéficierons d'un peu de jour pour commencer la route.

Ma 1ère question : comment est la route entre Punta Arenas et Puerto Natales ? en bon état ? Y a-t-il beaucoup de circulation ? Y a-t-il des riques à rouler la nuit ? Ma 2ème question : dans cette région, quelle est la meilleure enseigne pour louer une voiture ? Est-ce aussi Europcar comme dans le nord ?
