Hey everyone, I travel quite a bit, and I’m here to share my thoughts about an upcoming trip to Indonesia, specifically the Togian Islands.

I’m planning to go for 3 or 4 weeks in July-August and looking for a sunny destination that’s not too expensive (flights + cost of living), with varied points of interest. About fifteen years ago, I had planned a trip to the Togian Islands, but it didn’t happen, so I’m revisiting this destination (Sulawesi, Toraja country) + maybe others? Given that in Indonesia, I’ve already done volcanoes in Java, Bali, part of Lombok, and the Gili Islands. The issue is that I’ve read some posts about the plastic waste problems around the Togians, and it seems like they’re not the paradise islands they once were.

So, I have a few questions: I’d love to hear recent feedback from travelers who’ve been to the Togians to get an objective opinion (?) or if you’d recommend other paradise-like islands in Indonesia (not overcrowded).

If you confirm that it’s still an exceptional destination, what did you pair it with? The Moluccas and which islands in particular? Or Flores/Komodo? For my part, I don’t scuba dive—just snorkeling.

Finally, if you have other dream-island destinations (affordable and sunny), I’m all ears.

I’ve found ways to reach the South China Sea easily, whether from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. However, I can’t find a straightforward way to get to the Philippines by sea. There’s a cargo ship from Zamboanga to Sandakan, but getting to Sandakan is really complicated. Do you have any simpler ideas for ferries or cargo ships? I can arrive anywhere in the Philippines. Has anyone tried hitching rides on cargo ships in ports? From which port?

hi there, I’m looking for info on the Banggai Islands as an alternative to the Togians in Central Sulawesi. I’d like to compare the two destinations in terms of activities, accommodations, and access—the Togians seem gorgeous but very (too?) touristy (lots of resorts and already fully booked for July), while Banggai seems much more off the beaten path. Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. My first little question is this: We’ve booked a hotel 4 km from the airport (B2Krabi). Should I reserve a taxi through an app (which one?) to get there, or do you think I’ll easily find a taxi/tuk-tuk on the spot, considering we’ll arrive around 8/9 PM? Any idea of the expected price (for three people) for this short trip?

For the Krabi/Ko Phi Phi route, I’m not entirely sure where the departure point is—I’ve attached a photo of the map. Which company is the most affordable? Do you think I can buy my ticket the day before departure and still be sure to get seats? Is it better to book in advance (and if so, on which site)? Same question for the return trip from Ko Phi Phi to Krabi!

I’ve got a question about buses, which we love using in Bangkok, but it’s always a bit of a challenge to figure out how to get around. We always (eventually) reach our destination because there’s always someone willing to help us find our way, but this year, I’d like us to be a bit more independent. We’re a bit old-school—we like traveling without phones for a real digital detox (no judgment, everyone travels how they like! :) ), so ideally, we’d find an up-to-date map of Bangkok’s bus network, but we don’t know where to buy one... We managed to get one back in 2015, but I think it’s outdated now, and during our last trips, we couldn’t find any...

And if traveling like this is really outdated, could you recommend a reliable app for buses? That way, we could plan our routes using the hotel’s Wi-Fi before heading out.

I’m leaving for a little over 3 months starting at the end of January—Thailand (January-February), then Laos (February-March), Cambodia (March), and Vietnam (March-April).

I see that a lot of travelers don’t seem to book accommodations in advance and just go with the flow.

Given that I’ll be traveling during peak season (January to early May) and these are still very popular destinations, do you think I’ll be able to easily find places to stay on the spot without booking the day before?

Hi there, we’re planning to spend a month in Lombok in July 2026 and would love to hear your thoughts on Gili Gede.

We really enjoy snorkeling, preferably from the beach (so we don’t have to rely on renting a boat). On the side, we also love short hikes of a few hours—like to waterfalls or through rice fields (max 5–6 hours round trip). We’d like to stay in small family-run hotels away from the crowds (but with a pool, since our kids love spending their evenings there).

Do you think Gili Gede checks at least 2 of these 3 boxes (snorkeling + small family-run hotels away from the crowds)? Would you recommend a better spot in Lombok that ticks all 3 boxes?

Les suggestions qui me viennent à l'esprit ne sont pas vraiment nouvelles puisque l'une est Sri Chiangmai sur la route 211 en Issan ( 17°57'26.58"N 102°34'19.43"E ) sur le Mékhong et l'autre est Tha Song Yang* sur la route 105 sur la rivière Moei qui fait frontière avec le Myanmar ( 17°13'28.31"N 98°13'39.90"E ), 2 secteurs dont on avait déjà parlé lors de tes précédents préparatifs.

* à ne pas confondre avec BAN Tha Song Yang située sur la même route, très sympa aussi mais pas d'hébergements et pas de certitude qu'on y trouve un hôpital.

Accès à SCM par 2 bus quotidiens directs (dont un nocturne) a/c1 au départ de Bkk Motchit, 12h de trajet Accès à TSY par plusieurs bus quotidiens de a/c1 à VIP diurnes et nocturnes de Bkk Motchit jusqu'à Mae Sot (9h de trajet) puis 2h de songthéo toutes les 20mn pour TSY.

Il y a juste à ajouter deux (trois) personnages que je n'ai plus envie de voir tous les 5m.

Hi, A message for regulars or expats. Since I travel to Thailand often, I usually get a Thai Thrue mobile plan at 7/11 for a few hundred baht, and it works really well. This year, I’m going for 3 months and I’d like to keep my phone number with Free. It’s not much more expensive, with 35 GB of data per month and keeping my number (you just have to block MMS reception, which is the only extra charge). I also vaguely saw online that Free has an agreement with Thrue. What do you think? Have you ever tried Free in Thailand?

Pour ton info, en Thaïlande seuls les thaïs ont le droit d'exercer des activités touristiques telles que chauffeur, guide, accompagnateur ou tout synonyme du même acabit. Il n'existe aucun moyen légal d'y déroger pour un non-thaï. Il peut arriver que des occidentaux peu scrupuleux proposent leur service de chauffeur rétribué en douce sur les forums. Sur les routes jusqu'à ~200 kilomètres à l'intérieur des frontières les contrôles de police peuvent être fréquents.

Bonjour, Je fuis les minibus publics pour des raisons de sécurité, ils sont bondés et les chauffeurs conduisent comme des dingues. Par contre, nous avons fait Bangkok Sukhotay en bus très confortable et climatisé qui s'arrête dans des stations bien équipées en restaurants ...et toilettes. Nous avions des valises et sacs à dos, c'est le personnel du bus qui range nos bagages dans le coffre et nous donne un ticket. Même procédure pour récupérer ses bagages. C'est mieux que les bus Sncf dans ma région! Il y a beaucoup de compagnies de bus en Thaïlande. C'est le personnel du Airbnb qui nous avait gentiment aidé à acheter les billets, et nous a écrit les indications en thaï pour le cas où il faudrait demander de l'aide pour trouver le quai dans l'immense gare routière. Pour Lampang nous avons pris un bus moins luxueux mais le trajet était plus court. Et nous avons fait Lampang Chiang- mai en grand taxi pour 4, l'un de nous étant victime d'une sérieuse infection, mais ce n'était pas très cher. Une autre année, nous avons fait Bangkok gare routière -Prachuap KhiriKan avec un grand taxi envoyé par notre logeur. Il conduisait bien et le prix était compétitif. Les logeurs n'ont pas intérêt à conseillé des mauvais prestataires...avec internet la mauvaise publicité va très vite. Il y a des grands taxis partout dans les régions touristiques, ne vous inquiétez pas. Bon voyage.

I’d like to add some info about the shrink-wrapping service for luggage at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand. The service is available all along the departures terminal (top floor). Some stations also have a luggage scale, while others don’t. A small cutter is provided and inserted into the protective plastic. In February 2026, the cost is 250 baht per bag and 10 baht for weighing. I’ll share some photos.
