Southwest USA Road Trip Part II
by Dennis2 · 2026-10-12 · 1 reply
Thanks for this really vivid account... it just goes to show that even in front of the same landscape or place, we don’t necessarily see the same things.

And that’s exactly why travel stories like yours are so fascinating...
Transit zone room at Beijing Airport, Terminal 3

Hello, I confirm that staying in this airport isn’t comfortable or welcoming… and it’s poorly heated, indeed…

You can very easily take a trip into the city using the metro—it’s neither complicated nor expensive…

Ah, these questions! And it's precisely when you're on the spot, in Dallas, that some of them take on a whole new dimension. ..

Speaking of being on the spot, I thought the lone gunman theory was plausible…

But no matter which theory you subscribe to, being there, on that Plaza, gives you that little shiver of brushing up against major history…

Hello, you know when I told you that the church in Sedona was worth visiting… even if we’re not religious.

Totally agree with you about Route 66—it’s often far from the myth.

I saw that sunset where everything turns orange in the fall… it was starting to get chilly.

Well yeah, another travel journal—no need to hold back!

True, it doesn’t seem like there’ll be many people in Tombstone or Bisbee in August… I passed through in the fall, and there were tourists… Bisbee really *does* have a lot of charm.

So, if you're in the area... don't hesitate to push open the door of the Pima Air & Space Museum. You definitely won't regret it!

For sure, it looks amazing! I’d totally forgotten about this museum, but your photos put it right at the top of my must-visit list!

Hello, great travel journal of lesser-visited spots!

Question: How do you manage taking buses when everything is written in Chinese?
Looking for accommodation in Brazil
by Dennis2 · 2026-09-12 · 1 reply
Hello, that’s a bit vague—Brazil and its cities are huge!

If you’re staying for about a month and don’t want to move around all the time, you could rent an Airbnb for a few days (in Rio or São Paulo, for example). It’ll cost you less than a hotel, and you won’t have to eat out every day.

I’d also planned a little visit near this border, right by the checkpoint. In the end, I decided to skip it. No point in needlessly provoking the U.S. law enforcement. They’re already pretty particular as it is!

We’ll just look at the border from a bit farther away. That works too. 😊

You made the right call—the Bridge of the Americas area, which marks the border, is really just for vehicle traffic, nothing to see there…

That said, checking out the border outside of towns isn’t an issue. You can get as close as you want without the Border Patrol stepping in… In some spots, you could even wade across the Rio Grande to Mexico on foot—surprising, right?

Before arriving in El Paso, we’ll be stopped by Border Patrol. Passports in order, nothing to report. It’s not the same when heading to White Sands. Actually, we were registered on the ESTA app with only my name and not my wife’s. Hence the inability to justify her presence.

We were pulled over to the side of the checkpoint, and I started searching on my phone and emails. An agent who had taken my wife’s passport came back and told us everything was OK.

Moral of the story: Double-check the paper documents or make sure everyone is properly listed on the app.

You must’ve run into a particularly nitpicky agent... We’ve been stopped by Border Patrol countless times—at fixed checkpoints in Texas and Arizona—and every time, it’s been with a smile...

...Do we look like old Mexicans or what? OK, I’m out
Car rental in Phuket with drop-off in Krabi
by Dennis2 · 2026-09-09 · 0 replies
Hi, I’d like to split my stay into two parts: 15 days in Phuket and 15 days in Krabi. Do you know if I can rent a car and drop it off in Krabi when I return to France? Thanks for your feedback! Have a great Sunday, Martine

Hi, I did this Phuket/Krabi car rental last year with Thrifty.

No complaints—the staff was friendly… except I had to go ask at Krabi airport where the agent was to drop off the car. They weren’t expecting me… and barely checked the car. All with a smile, though.

Wednesday, August 5, 2026. We're leaving Houston after a short stay because, aside from the Space Center, there isn't much to see in Houston. .😉

The must-see spot in Houston, which is also free, is what’s called the "Rothko Chapel": an octagonal, ecumenical chapel surrounded by monochrome paintings… being there, in the silence surrounded by canvases that resonate, is a truly unique experience…

Hello,

I agree about the trucks—they barrel along and couldn’t care less about cars. They’re really intimidating, no doubt. What’s weird is that you hardly see any modern-looking trucks; it’s mostly Macks that look like they drove straight out of the 1960s…

On the road, I actually find driving in the US pretty chill, especially in these states with endless straightaways…

Looking forward to the rest of the adventures!

What destination for a first one-month trip with 2- and 5-year-old kids in 2027?
by Dennis2 · 2026-08-18 · 1 reply
A road trip I did with kids by car, which is really much more practical and not too expensive.

Waterfalls, beautiful parks, a bit of history with traces of the war (Bridge on the River Kwai period), few people or Western tourists, an immersion in lovely countryside...

And seeing the Burmese border—even if, as Songsam says, there’s nothing exceptional, the atmosphere is something else...
Is it risky to walk around Rio alone?
by Dennis2 · 2026-08-13 · 1 reply
Hey, if you stick to the southern neighborhoods and the beaches, you won’t run into much trouble.

Also, avoid downtown on weekends and at night when the offices are closed—it gets sketchy.

And just so you know, as a woman, you can dress super short and no one will say anything or hit on you.

Alpine overnight stop; .

........in Alpine, restaurants close by 9 PM—it’s super quiet at night!

The local classic bar: The Ritchey, right by the train station....

Otherwise, not far past Marfa (a super hip little town with the hotel where James Dean stayed), there’s something pretty wild on Highway 90: the Prada store in the middle of nowhere... a contemporary art installation. Personally, I love it...
