I’ve been dreaming about the Silk Road for a long time and hope to visit Uzbekistan next year with my husband and son (11 years old). Late April to early May.

I’m planning a very classic itinerary: Tashkent - Samarkand - Bukhara - Khiva - Tashkent.

I checked the Uzbekistan Railways website, but it seems you can only book tickets three months in advance?

Otherwise, I’ve seen some people in other discussions suggest booking through Uzrailway. Are these the apps below? Are they reliable?

I really don’t want to go through a travel agency—I’d prefer to organize everything myself—and it seems the only hurdle is booking the trains. I was thinking of taking the train from Tashkent to Samarkand, then to Bukhara, and finally to Khiva, before flying back from Urgench to Tashkent with Uzbekistan Airways (is that a bad idea?🤪). What do you think?

Since we’re traveling with a child, I’d rather book and organize everything in advance to avoid any potential hassles. I tend to plan my trips much more now than I used to😏.

Would you have any great accommodation recommendations (not luxury, but not a youth hostel either)? We prefer places with charm, friendly owners, and a nice setting...

Also, I speak several languages but not Uzbek or Russian🤪... Is English widely spoken these days?

I’m planning a trip to Turkey this summer and I’d like to get there by hitchhiking. I’ll be traveling solo, and I’ve already done a lot of hitchhiking (Brazil, Albania, from Paris to Romania with a companion, France, Vietnam, Cambodia, and short distances in India).

Has anyone here already made this trip by hitchhiking? How long did it take you? Which countries were the hardest to find a ride in? What techniques did you use to get rides in places where people don’t usually stop? Have you ever had to pitch your tent on a highway rest area? Have you ever run into any problems?

I’m not worried about hitchhiking in Europe, but I don’t know much about Turkey or its culture. Is hitchhiking something people do there? What about hitchhiking as a solo woman—do cars stop? What should I watch out for in this country?

I’m looking for stories from people who’ve actually had this experience—or at least part of it—not advice from those who’ve never traveled this way or in these countries. Thanks for respecting that!

My partner and I are planning a 21-day self-drive trip from Victoria Falls to Cape Town, flying from Montreal to Victoria Falls and renting a 4x4. I’d love to hear members’ thoughts on our itinerary and its feasibility, along with your recommendations for must-see spots, essential parks, lodges, etc.

Our ideal is to start our stay at the falls and head south to South Africa, finishing in Cape Town by the sea for two days of relaxation before returning to Canada. We’re big on photography, not so much on cities, and we usually book accommodations where we can prepare our own dinner. Is this itinerary too ambitious? I’ve read a lot of travel journals and sometimes it seems very doable, other times completely the opposite...

Hi there, We’re heading to Argentina and Chile next February and really want to do the Carretera Austral starting from Coyhaique.

We’d love some info and feedback on bus routes to get to Coyhaique: Buenos Aires to Comodoro (which we’ve found pretty easily so far), or Buenos Aires to Bariloche (same, there are buses).

The tricky part is getting to Coyhaique in Chile, the starting point for the Carretera Austral. We can’t find any routes! Has anyone done this trip before and could share some tips?

TV scriptwriters are a funny bunch. As soon as their ordinary mug starts becoming recognizable on the street thanks to success, their egos start swelling. They walk on clouds. So, one of the guys who worked on the script for our trip—the one who specifically came up with the bit about the SD card being ejected into the great beyond—has built himself a nice little reputation. The kind that can sometimes launch a real career. Then, inevitably, they just can’t stop. That’s how this guy had the poor idea of adding one last twist to the sequence that made him a one-day star. An idea that’s basically about squeezing the lemon until the very last drop, if you know what I mean. The little bag I take everywhere with my essentials—car keys, camera, phone—has also hosted a bunch of secondary items over time. Tissues, a book, city maps... whatever. It became a mess! So I finally decided to sort it out. I empty it onto a table. And there, stunned, I find the memory card that Dom and I desperately searched for on all fours on Cahill’s Crossing walkway, remember? Under the shocked gaze of a little Australian girl. It had ejected straight into my bag! What do you think? Should we fire the scriptwriter? It’s way too improbable! Stuff like that doesn’t happen in real life, right?

We head out to explore Cairns. The city is mostly about the waterfront, the Esplanade. You’ll find tons of bronze plaques there, most of them in memory of a deceased loved one. All you have to do is shell out a few hundred euros, and one day, a bewildered tourist will read your prose, charmed by your lovely turns of phrase. Vanity is a thriving business!

It makes for some reading... We spot our parakeets again... What were they called? Oh right, in abundance! Everywhere, banyan fig trees provide shade from a sun that never seems to tire. Parks... Here, kids are king. Luxury hotels with their infinity pools...

You don’t know where to look first... You’ve got to go all out. Google... Where can we rent bikes? When we finally track down the only operator in town, we find the place closed. A bit further on, a Visitor’s Center might find us an alternative? We meet a charming young guy, super dynamic and a great communicator. We leave without bikes but with a full snorkeling package for the day after tomorrow! I call the shop that let us down... Well done! The owner was at the doctor’s; he’s back now, and we can make a deal!

- Oh, Dominique, where are you off to like that, so proudly and at full speed? - Me? To the Botanic Garden, of course! It’s huge and free!

Thursday, November 2, 2023 Lake Argyle – Katherine

We had a great time. Now we’ve got to pay the price. We’re down one stop before Katherine. Gotta do the whole trip in one go—6 hours of driving. Let’s go! We’re a bit low on fuel with only 300 kilometers of range. The only station at the lake doesn’t open until 9 a.m., and the next (and only) one is 227 kilometers away… Should we risk it? Except for a magnificent frilled-neck lizard darting across the road on its big hind legs and an emu quickly disappearing into the bush, we didn’t see much. Oh—there was also a donkey, lost and panicked in the middle of the road… A quiet road with some beautiful scenery, some worrying bushfires

and a few opportunities to stop for a "warrior’s rest" (never go beyond the first second of the thought that starts drifting off the road…) We cross an invisible border as we enter the Northern Territory, which comes with consequences—we immediately lose an hour and a half by changing time zones. The speed limit goes from 110 to 130.

We arrive at the self check-in in Katherine. As usual, we’re a little taken aback at first. The noise, for starters. There’s a group rehearsing, it seems. We go check it out. We pass through the doors separating "The Stuart" from the adjoining bar and stumble upon what feels like collective hysteria. Turns out, it’s a concert. Aboriginal musicians completely fired up by some incredible music! There are just three of them, but they’re delivering a wall of sound that reminds us of South Africa’s finest neo-techno with a trance-like vibe. The crowd is wild! They’re singing in unison, screaming with joy. We get gently kicked out by security because we’re carrying our groceries, and they’re not having it. We promise ourselves we’ll come back once we’ve put them away in our little fridge.

Then we land. We end up finding plenty of nice things. It’s very possible we’ll like this place!

We head back to enjoy our post-battle Happy Hour. The concert’s over, but the crowd’s still riding the high. It’s indescribable. People are shouting across the room, screaming just for the fun of it—men and women alike. There’s pool, some beat-up arcade games being shaken like coconut trees. Dom and I feel like anthropologists. We’re pretty blown away. It’s epic! And the beer’s half the price it is elsewhere! We’ll definitely be back—that’s for sure!

We give up on finding a restaurant. Not sure they even exist, at least not this season. So, we’ve got a microwave—we eat at home on our little terrace, with a musical accompaniment from a massive orchestra of birds. It sounds amazing!

I plan to travel mostly by bus and taxi (for destinations where I can’t take the bus), except for the trip from Kathmandu to Chitwan Park, where I’ll take a flight. Should I book the flight now, or can I do it once I arrive in Nepal? Is a trekking permit required for the hike from Panauti to Namo Buddha Monastery? And is it required for the trek from Dhulikhel to Nagarkot?

Is it better to book the Poon Hill trek in advance through an agency, or is it best to do it independently (without an agency) without a guide or porter? Is it easy to do this trek without getting lost? What’s the typical price for the Poon Hill trek when going through an agency? Is it better to book accommodations for the Poon Hill trek before leaving for Nepal, or can I easily find places to stay on the same day without prior booking? Is it possible to do both the sunrise excursion to Sarangkot and paragliding over the lake in one day (on my fifth and final day there)? Thanks in advance for your help!

Nous voudrions faire la randonnée du sentier haut dans les cinq terres. Elle semble faisable en 2 jours. Quelles sont les solutions possibles pour dormir? Merci.

‌ Bonjour, En Septembre, quand les "travailleurs" auront repris le boulot, je pars marcher dans les Pyrénées centrales (que je ne connais pas du tout) : l'idée est de partir de Cauterets (Parc National des Pyrénées), de passer par Gavarnie bien sûr et de terminer par le Pic du Midi de Bigorre, après avoir fait une boucle par les lacs (Aumar, l'Oule, Gréziolles). J'ai prévu hébergement et restauration en refuges ou gîtes d'étape, pique-niques pour les repas de midi. Suite aux recherches que j'ai faites, j'évalue la durée de la "balade" à 10 jours en étapes de 4 à 7h. Mes questions aux connaisseurs du terrain : - Compte tenu du relief de la zone, prévoir 10 jours pour faire cette rando vous semble-t-il "raisonnable" ? (70 ans, bonne condition physique, j'ai l'habitude de marcher mais plutôt en moyenne montagne). ​- Un endroit du trajet me préoccupe : la Hourquette d'Ossoue (2734m) ; j'ai lu qu'on pouvait y trouver de la neige, même en été... qu'en est-il vraiment ? ​- Pour le reste du parcours, est-il praticable avec de bonnes chaussures (type Timberland) jusque fin Septembre ? Une proposition : ​- S'il y a des randonneurs (euses) isolé(e)s (comme moi) qui aimeraient faire la "balade", qu'ils me fassent signe : je suis prêt à modifier, diminuer ou rallonger mon projet initial sans problème. Simplement, il faut faire vite : en naviguant sur les sites des refuges, je me suis rendu compte que début Septembre commence déjà à se remplir ! ​ Merci d'avance aux Pyrénéistes ! Mon rêve pour mon prochain voyage serait de trouver un billet d'avion du jour pour le lendemain et improviser à partir de là. L'idée serait de trouver des billets pas cher évidemment.

Connaissez vous un site qui propose ce type d'offres. Je me demande aussi si c'est réellement dans l'intérêt des compagnies aériennes de brader leurs places invendues dans les dernières heures..

Mon vol pour Montréal est prévu le 26 juin et est toujours maintenu. J'ai reçu un mail pour modifier l'heure de départ ( 3h plus tard). J'ai accepté la modification, parce qu'apparemment, si on refuse, les billets sont tout simplement supprimés et on doit contacter Brussel airlines pour booker autre chose.. or c'est IMPOSSIBLE de les avoir au téléphone et on ne peut pas modifier en ligne. Donc, j'ai accepté. Ma question est: puisque les frontières seront probablement encore femées, tant en UE qu'au Canada, est-il possible que le vol soit quand même maintenu, mais que je puisse pas voyager? Et alors, aurais-je droit à un remboursement ou au moins un voucher? Merci de votre aide!

Je suis en train de renouveler ma carte d'identité pour partir au Portugal, je n'ai pas encore acheté de billets ou autre avant d'avoir ma carte comme lu dans le forum. J'ai eu un rendez-vous mairie le 04/06 et je vois sur le site de suivi que l'étape en est déjà à "Titre en cours de production depuis le 05/06/2020".

Qu'est ce que cela veut dire concrètement ? désolé si cette question à l'air un peu bête. Est ce que cela veut dire que les justificatifs sont ok (et donc que je peux souffler côté administratif) et que la carte est déjà en cours de fabrication à l'imprimerie ? Connaissez-vous les délais moyens à partir de cette étape ? (ça me parait très rapide quand même)

En faite il y a 5 étapes dans le suivi : - Demande recueillie en Mairie en commune le 04/06/2020 - Demande en cours d'instruction par le service instructeur - Titre en cours de production depuis le 05/06/2020 - Titre disponible en Mairie pour la remise - Titre remis A partir de quand puis-je envisager de réserver mon moyens de transports etc ?
