We’re a French couple, aged 69 and 74, and we’d like to visit several parks in the American West, including of course the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Valley of Fire, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. We’re planning a flexible trip of 15 to 20 days between April and June 2027.

One of us will buy the America the Beautiful pass for $250, and of course, we’ll share the gas costs. I’ll answer two questions you’re probably wondering about right away: Why aren’t we renting a vehicle ourselves? Because we’ve barely driven in our lives. And why aren’t we doing an organized tour? Because most organized tours only cover a few parks and rush through them with a round-trip flight from France. We’d like to take this opportunity to visit iconic U.S. cities for an extra month and a half as well.

If you’re interested in joining us for a few parks—not necessarily all of them—let me know. As I mentioned, our dates are flexible.

Exploring the American West with others is more fun, and since I’ve already had a great experience traveling with companions, I’m doing it again.

The initial plan is to arrive in San Francisco, then head to Yosemite >> Death Valley >> Las Vegas >> Zion >> Bryce Canyon >> Moab >> Mesa Verde >> Monument Valley >> Page >> Grand Canyon and finish in Los Angeles (of course, this can be done in reverse depending on international flights).

Renting a car, keeping it cool and in good spirits. For accommodations, we’re open to youth hostels, motels, hotels, etc. (no preference).

A 3-week (or 4-week) road trip, doable between June 23 and September 22.

But everything can change based on everyone’s ideas and desires—as long as flights aren’t booked yet...

Hi, I’m starting to plan a great trip for the last three weeks of January 2027 (my first time in South Africa). After spending a few hours (!) browsing this forum, here’s a rough first draft of my itinerary:

D0 Arrival at JNB D1, D2 Blyde River Canyon D3, D4, D5, D6, D7: Kruger D8, D9, D10: St Lucia and surrounding area D11, D12, D13, D14: Drakensberg + Lesotho

D15 A very long driving day to the south (hope the AC doesn’t break down!)

D16, D17, D18, D19 southwest coast (so far I’ve noted Oudtshoorn, Robberg Nature Reserve, Wilderness NP, De Hoop Reserve, and a bit of the wine route) D20, D21 Cape Town (peninsula and a bit of the city) + domestic flight and return flight (departure from JNB at 11 PM)

A few questions before refining this: - Do you see any major issues with this itinerary?

- We don’t have a choice on dates, and personally, I prefer green landscapes to desert ones anyway, but do you really see far fewer animals in January than in the dry season? Five days in Kruger should give us enough time to spot plenty of different animals despite the tall grass, right? As for the heat, we’re from Réunion, so we’re relatively used to it, even though I know it’s not the same type of heat.

- Can I trust the distances and driving times given by Google Maps?

- Picking up the vehicle in Johannesburg and dropping it off in Cape Town: how much might that cost us? I’m thinking it probably won’t be worse (in terms of time or money, since there are five of us—2 adults + 3 kids) than going back to Joburg after Lesotho, taking a flight to Cape Town, and renting another vehicle... but maybe I’m wrong.

- Finally, wouldn’t it be better to focus on just one of the two regions (either the northeast or Cape Town and the south coast)? If it were up to me, I’d stick to the first part and extend a few stops... but not everyone agrees! And we’re thinking that since it’ll be really hot, a second part of the trip that’s a bit """cooler""" would be welcome.

We’re planning our second trip to South Africa in July 2026. In 2023, we did a loop from Joburg, Golden Gate, Drakensberg, Hluhluwe, St Lucia, Eswatini, Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, and back to Joburg. This time, we’d like to go to Cape Town and do a road trip to Port Elizabeth, then fly back to Joburg to return to Kruger. At this stage of my planning, here’s what it could look like:

D1 to D4: Cape Town and Cape of Good Hope (Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Waterfront, Bo-Kaap, Boulders, Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak Drive). I’ve spotted a few places to stay between Camps Bay and Hout Bay (3 nights). D5 and D6: Either Karoo NP or Hermanus and De Hoop. Any opinions to tip the scales? I’ll admit I’m already leaning toward Karoo (the "wild" vibe of the landscapes and wildlife encounters appeal to me much more than the seaside, which feels less exotic). If we go for Karoo, where should we stay? Inside the park or in Beaufort West? I’ve seen good reviews for Ko-ka Tsara Bush Camp, but maybe it’s better to stay in the Sanparks cottages to make the most of the park? (2 nights) Option B is to do Stellenbosch (though vineyards aren’t great in winter) and/or the Whale Route—Betty’s Bay, Hermanus, De Hoop (2 nights near Gansbaai). D7 and D8: Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn. Staying at De Cango Guest Farm (2 nights). D9 and D10: Knysna, Robberg Nature Reserve, Tsitsikamma (2 nights in Plettenberg Bay and 1 night in PE). D11: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Joburg at 7 AM and drive to Marloth Park.

For Kruger, I’ve booked 2 nights in Marloth Park, 1 night in Skukuza, 2 nights in Satara, and 1 night in Talamati, which we loved. I’ll book the last night in Graskop later since we want to revisit the Blyde Canyon area.

I’d love all the feedback you can give on my itinerary, especially for days 5 and 6. If you have recommendations for accommodations for 4 people, I’d appreciate those too. Thanks! 🙂

Hi everyone, For those who’ve been following me... progress is being made! Anyway, just to recap for the others: I’m leaving Manyeleti (a private reserve) to do a self-drive safari in the main Kruger Park for 2 nights before heading to Blyde River Canyon (sharing all this so you can picture the route). So Satara seemed like a good base for the safari, except that you can only book accommodation in this non-private park through Sandparks to find a camp. Since Satara is fully booked, the only ones with availability for my dates are: Tamboti, Olifants, and Satara—wait, no, Satara’s full—so Letaba, sorry! Any thoughts on these camps? Because I can enter via Orpen and drive north (safari-style), which would let us explore, but: 1/ Too many km if we pick the farthest one, Letaba? If I leave Manyeleti (Honeyguide Mantobeni) after the morning safari, what time do I need to be at the camp by?

Hi everyone, I’m in the middle of planning our trip/safari to Kruger in October: - 2 nights in the Manyeleti private reserve (Honeyguide Montobeni) - 2 nights in Kruger for a self-drive safari (which reserve, or where to stay?) - 1 night at Blyde River Canyon (where?) - 2 nights in the Balule private reserve (Imagine Africa Luxury) Then heading to CAPE TOWN. So as you’ve probably guessed, I’m not sure: - where to stay for the BRC and need lodge names - coming from Manyeleti and heading to the BRC, which strategic spot in greater Kruger to choose (I was thinking Satara, not too far) but couldn’t find any available places for October on Sandparc - and which domestic flight destination for Manyeleti from JNB (Hoedspruit?) to arrive at Orpen Gate, - And same question for which airport to fly out to Cape Town after Balule. Hi there, For our upcoming trip to Central Asia starting on July 7th, we have two spots available in our car with a French-speaking driver. We’ll depart from Almaty in Kazakhstan, visiting the Charyn Canyon, then the Kolsay and Kayindy lakes. After crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan, our itinerary in this nomadic country includes Karakol, Djety Oguz, and the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul: Skazka Canyon, Barskoon Gorges... all the way to Lake Song-Kul, where we’ll take a rest day to enjoy the surroundings. We’ll return to Bishkek via Kyzyl-Oi and the Suusamyr Valley on July 16th. Two people can join us for this part of our journey from Almaty to Bishkek. DM us if you're interested. Best, Marie

Hi there, We’re planning a month-long (or longer) trip to Colombia next February. We’re thinking of getting around by bus or taxi. For part of the trip, we’ve decided to start in Bogotá, then head to Villa de Leyva, then Barichara and the Chicamocha Canyon, and finally arrive in Bucaramanga to catch a flight to Medellín. I’m giving it another shot to share a trip I’ve planned for next July. My itinerary starts in Almaty, Kazakhstan, with hikes around Lake Kaindy and Lake Kolsay, then the Charyn Canyon. After crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan, we’ll head to the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul and finally to Lake Song Kul. There’ll be walks at Fairy Tale Canyon, Seven Bulls, and Barskoon Gorge...

After a flight from Bishkek to Tashkent, we’ll visit the cities of Uzbekistan: Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva.

Transport will be by car with a driver.

We’re a couple in our sixties and would love to share this trip with another couple or two solo travelers.

We’re traveling as a family to South Africa for the first time in July (two parents and our four young adult children). We’ve planned a loop starting from Port Elizabeth for 13 days, followed by another loop from Johannesburg with 2 days at Blyde River Canyon and 5 days in Kruger NP.

We’re wondering about the Port Elizabeth loop. Here’s our initial idea: Day 1: Early arrival in Port Elizabeth, morning walk in Tsitsikamma NP, night at Storm River Rest Camp. Day 2: Continue visiting Tsitsikamma NP early in the morning, then Robberg Nature Reserve, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 3: Visit the Wilderness area, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 4: Drive to Hermanus. Several options: Bontebok NP or The Hoop and Cape Agulhas; night in Hermanus. Day 5: Coastal trail, boat trip (?), night in Cape Town. Day 6: Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap, Waterfront; night in Cape Town. Day 7: Cape Peninsula, night in Cape Town. Day 8: Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, Matjiesfontein; night in the area. Day 9: AM: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 10: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 11: AM: Camdeboo NP; night in Graaff-Reinet. Day 12: Morning: Camdeboo NP; drive to Addo Elephant NP; visit depending on arrival time; night at Addo Elephant Rest Camp. Day 13: Addo Elephant NP; night in Port Elizabeth. Day 14: Early flight.

Does this seem balanced and suitable for July? It’s quite packed, but we’ve already had to skip quite a bit. Initially, would it be better to spend 2 nights in Tsitsikamma and just one in Wilderness? Or just one night at each to free up a day for something else?

For the car, is a minivan enough, or should we plan at least an SUV for the parks given the season?

In June 2022, we covered 5,600 km. The major stops: San Francisco, Yosemite Park, Death Valley Park, Las Vegas, Zion Park, Bryce Canyon Park, Monument Valley Park, Grand Canyon Park, then the Pacific coast and back to San Francisco.

On a repéré 2 ou 3 trucs à faire sur la HITRR. Selon les possibilités de voyage ce sera sur un mois d'avril / mai ou octobre.

Selon le classement de madame: Coyote Gulch, Reflection Canyon, Zebra Slot

Pour Coyote Gulch, possible de faire en une journée avec Jacob Hamblin sans escalade ? Ou quel itinéraire conseillez vous sur une journée pour profiter au mieux ?

Pour Reflection Canyon, 2 jours en backpack, pas impossible à mon sens même si jamais backpacké, c'est une question d'organisation et d'ici là on a le temps de s’entraîner et s'organiser. Visuellement est ce que le niveau d'eau est bas en octobre d'habitude ? Je dirai oui après les fortes chaleurs d'été ....

Sinon Zebra et Tunnel, puis Devils Garden au sunset sur le retour. Petite journée cool.

Avec mon conjoint nous allons faire un voyage aux UsA du 3 novembre au 4 décembre. Notre arrivé et départ se feront de San Francisco.

Nous pensions faire: - Yellowstone - grand Teton - arches - salt lake city - gran canyon - Brice canyon - Zion -monument valley - Las Vegas - Los Angeles - Antelope canyon / lac Powel - Sequoia NP

Nous pensions prendre un vol interne entre SF et Bozeman puis louer une voiture pour faire Yellowstone. Seulement voilà d'après ce que j'ai pu lire sur différents sites yellowstone en novembre c'est compliqué ! Ma question est de savoir est ce que cela reste possible ?

Nous pensions passé 4/5 jours sur Yellowstone puis 2 jours du côté de grand Teton puis vol interne entre Jackson et Salt Lake.

De salt lake redescendre jusqu'à Las Vegas en visitant les parcs.

Las Vegas pendant 2 jours puis Los Angeles en avion ou voiture passé 3 jours à Los Angeles puis vol vers San Francisco, visiter pendant 3/4 jours et vol vers Paris.

Qu'en pensez vous ? Est ce possible ? Au sein de Yellowstone comment s'organiser au mois de novembre ? J'ai vu qu'il y avait possibilité de faire de la moto neige, raquette ou ski de fond. Est ce que l'un d'entre vous l'a expérimenté ? Peut on quand même voir les geysers, old faithful, grand prismatic spring, Hayden Valley et tous les autres sites de Yellowstone ? Peut on traverser le parc pour rejoindre grand Teton ensuite ?

Bref désolé pour ce gros pavé mais j'ai du mal à trouver des infos et où retour de personne aya't fait Yellowstone et grand Teton en novembre... En gros nous serions sur yellowstone à partir du 5 novembre au matin.

Ré bonjour, Petit soucis avec base camp. Pour rejoindre Walvis Bay à Sandwich Harbour, base camp fait s'arrêter la piste et elle reprend environs 50m plus loin. Même problème avec la piste dans le canyon Kuiseb. Ce problème n'apparaît pas sur la carte papier. Quelqu'un a t il réussi ces passages ou y a t il un réel problème.?? Doit on faire demi tour ou c' est fait pour vous inciter à prendre un guide. Merci beaucoup pour votre aide

Nous avons pris la hâte des billets pour los angeles ( nous partons dans 15 jours...) et nous sommes entrain de finaliser le programme . nous avons 2 enfants de 12 et 8 ans et 4 jours pour partir de LA faire le grand canyon et monument valley et retourner à LA. Il me semble que cela fait beaucoup de km pour la durée mais j'ai beau me tordre les méninges dans tous les sens, je ne trouve pas de solution, du coup j'aimerais votre avis si c'est réalisable sans être trop lourd en km.

J1: Départ de LA vers 7 H en faisant malgré tout des arrêts sur la route 66 pour entrecouper la journée, le but étant d'arriver à selingman ou williams pour y passer la nuit.

J2: départ de selingman/Williams vers monument valley pour y arriver vers en debut d'apres midi et faire la valley drive et dormir à monument valley

J3: départ de MV vers tusayan pour faire le gran canyon et passer la nuit à tusayan

J4: trajet retour ver LA

Je ne vois pas d'autres solutions car match de basket à LA la veille du J1 et avion de retour le lendemain du J4 donc pas possible de rajouter 1 journée.

Qu'ne pensez vous est ce jouable sans que ce soit une corvée?

Bonjour, Nous comptons relier à vélo Jasper au Canada à San Diego en Californie de Juillet à fin septembre en passant par les parc canadiens, Yellostone, Zion, Grand, d Canyon. Nous suivrons pour une grande partie les routes éditées par Adventurecycling. Mais sur une partie du trajet nous cherchons des renseignements. De Grand Tetons à Cedar City en passant éventuellement par Salt Lake City. Quelqu'un aurait-il déjà fait ce trajet à vélo ? Si oui quelles routes a-t-il emprunté ?

Bonjour, Nous partons 15 jours en Afrique du Sud au mois d'août prochain avec nos 4 "ados" (15 à 21 ans). Arrivée Johannesbourg puis Blyde river canyon, Kruger, Eswatini , Sainte Lucie, Lesotho et enfin Drakensberg. Nous n’avons pas trouvé de 4*4 pour 6 😕 donc nous aurons un Volkswagen travellers. J'ai lu que la route de 7 km pour rejoindre le Sentinelle car park était impraticable en 2*4 au moins pour la première moitié de la route, mais aussi qu'un projet de route goudronnée était dans l'air. Qu'en savez vous ? Cette route a t elle était goudronnée ? Confirmez vous l'impossibilité de faire ce chemin en voiture 2*4 ? J'ai lu également que l'on pouvait prendre une navette à partir du Witsiehoek lodge pour 150R aller retour. Est ce facile de trouver ces navettes ? le passage est il fréquent ? comment fait on au retour ? Il y a t il un horaire de dernière navette ? Nous devrions arriver vers 11h au lodge, pensez vous que nous avons le temps de faire cette petite rando (j'ai lu que cela prenait environ 4h mais nous allons aussi déjeuner et il y a le temps des formalités pour les navettes...? Bonjour 😊, Nous partons en road trip dans l'Ouest américain, 20 jours en août 2020 avec nos 3 adolescents. C'est notre 1er long voyage et notre 1ere fois aux USA. Nous faisons la boucle : San Francisco, Los Angeles, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Las Vegas, San Francisco. Notre programme est déjà bien avancé jusqu'à à Las Vegas. Par contre nous ne savons pas comment finir notre voyage entre Vegas et San Francisco. Départ de Las Vegas le matin du 12 août. Et nous devons être à San Francisco le 14 août à midi. Nous avons donc 2 nuits à caser. Idéalement nous aimerions traverser Death Valley et le parc Yosemite, mais cela nous semble très court au niveau du temps. Que pouvez-vous nous conseiller ? Nous sommes un peu perdus... Où dormir pour ne pas faire trop de route à la fois ? Que voir absolument dans ce timing ? Merci beaucoup à tous pour vos conseils 🙂 !

Cet été nous partons 6 semaines dans l'ouest américain, avec une incursion de quelques jours à Vancouver (et sur l'île de Vancouver). Nous arrivons à Los Angeles, on remonte jusqu'à Glacier National Park en passant par Las Vegas, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Moab, grand Teton et Yellowstone. Puis direction Vancouver avant de redescendre par l'Oregon jusqu'à San Francisco. Hier j'allais finaliser la location de voiture avec Sixt, mais il est précisé que le véhicule n'est pas autorisé à rouler au Canada... Quels sont les loueurs qui acceptent une incursion Canadienne ? J'ai réservé un vol en hélico le 2ème jour : piton Maïdo, cirques de Cilaos, Mafate et Salazie, canyon Trou de Fer, piton de la fournaise. Le premier jour, comme on ne peut pas tout voir et que je pars du port à 25 km de st Denis, j'hésite entre visiter

le sud : Saint Philippe, Grand Brûlé, piton de la fournaise, tunnels de lave, cap Méchant le nord : St Denis, cirque de Salazie, voile de la Mariée, Hell Bourg
